Event Review: HONOR Wednesday Warfare IV

Attendance:1,000, Event Rating:124
Author:Tony Rossi

Well we had a great night of fights, a little controversy and some big knockouts go a long way in my book. I personally had an epic night of drinking and winning some money thanks to In The Red Sportsbook. It was the first time I have profited from putting down my hard earned cash and that makes this event all the more special. The big sell I am sure helped Meet the Future as well, so it seems everyone had a great night, well almost everyone as I know at least ten people who did not.

Preliminary Bout Number 1- Featherweight Fight (135lbs)

Johnny "Brutal" Bedford defeats Justin "Glenn" Bostic

Normally I break down each and every round but I just can’t do that for this fight. This was one sided from the opening buzzer. Bostic was zero for one on strikes for all three rounds. He was also zero for five on takedowns. Everything else that happened was Bedford landing strikes in and out of the clinch, scoring takedowns, and trying to finish. Bostic was out matched and overpowered in this match up and it showed. Bedford won by unanimous decision but it’s not because he was not trying to finish. We need to give a hand to Bostic for taking a beating like that, but still defending every submission and moving forward while the better fighter picked him a part. A lot of heart was shown from Bostic tonight, but Bedford gets the big payday with the unanimous decision win.

Preliminary Bout Number 2- Light Heavyweight (205lbs)

"The Real O.G." Ragnar Lothbrok defeats Tim Tupy

The Real O. G. who doesn’t love that name? Ragnar The Real O. G. was super-fast out there tonight, and he had amazing foot work. Tupy was looking to land but a lot of shots right off the bat but Ragnar was able to avoid most of them by slipping jabs and dancing out of the way of hooks. Ragnar did not just use his feet to duck and dodge punches as he landed a few kicks, one of which was a high kick that knocked Tupy into the middle of next week. Ragnar got the big head kick knockout at :48 of the first round.

Preliminary Bout Number 3- Light Heavyweight Fight (205lbs)

"Dangerous" Phillip Finnegan defeats Gustov "Downtown" Brown

The first minute of this fight was jam packed with Finnegan landing at will, and Brown whiffing on everything. The next minute did not get much better, as Finnegan continued to swarm Brown. Finnegan landed a huge head kick that knocked Brown down, and after Brown got back up Finnegan dropped him with a punch only this time he rushed in and got the finish. Finnegan won the fight by TKO at 1:40 of the first round. A very interesting stat in this fight Brown landed only ten percent of his strikes to Finnegan’s eighty one percent. After I seen that I understood why this fight only lasted one minute and forty seconds.

Preliminary Bout Number 4- Featherweight Fight (145lbs)

Bruce Shashia defeats Dallas "Haneous" Riley

Another one sided fight in this one. Riley landed zero strikes out of one attempt and zero take downs on four attempts. Shashia landed seven out of eleven strikes while standing and two out of three from the ground. Shashia just imposed his will on Riley and after just 1:53 in the first round the referee had to call a stop to the fight. Shashia got the win via TKO after knocking Riley to his knees and then pummeling him until the ref could stop the fight.

Preliminary Bout Number 5- Featherweight Fight (145lbs)

Todd Flanders defeats "Tap U Out" Teddy Bass

The first minute of this fight was all Flanders. Flanders was landing with leg kicks but he quickly moved up wards on Bass and even split his face open. Flanders then took control in a clinch as Bass struggled to get out of it. Bass did eventually pull guard and he went for a submission but Flanders was able to defend it and then stand up. That was about all she wrote for Bass as Flanders showed off his superior striking skills. Flanders was able to get back to the clinch and he started to unload. At one point I thought Bass was out on his feet, and Flanders just couldn’t finish him, even though he certainly tried. The entire last two minutes of the first round was Flanders going to the head and body of Bass.

I couldn’t believe Flanders did not get the win in the first round, but that shows you just how important a good hearts is in this business. With that being said just 0:08 seconds into the second round Flanders was declared the winner after he landed an uppercut and then followed the falling Bass to the mat to finish with strikes.

Main Card Bout Number 1- Bantamweight Fight (135lbs)

Austin "Hollywood" Worner defeats Steven "Hecklly" Heck

In the first round Heck was able to take Worner to the ground, but the tide quickly changed. Worner went to work attempting submission after submission but Heck was able to defend well. Towards the end of the first round these two fighters got to hear exactly what the fans thought of them both taking a break. I was surprised that the referee did not stand the two up, but eventually Worner did got back to work on trying submissions. The round comes to an end and I easily have Worner winning 10-9.

Heck did a great job getting take downs in the second round, but Worner was able to hold and control to the point we had several referee stand ups. The action on the mat was not entertaining at all in the second but seeing Heck fly in a takedown Worner was interesting to see. Heck easily won the round 10-9 and I have the fight 19-19 after two.

A snore fest happened in the the third round, Heck got a takedown and we got a ref stand up. Worner clinched and did a little damage, and then got a takedown of his own. Heck was able to stand up but he was traped in the clinch. Worner did a little more damage but nothing significant. I gave the edge to Worner but by just a small bit. 10-9 Worner for the round 29-28 for the fight and two of the three judges agreed. Worner wins a majority decision in a very unentertaining fight.

Main Card Bout Number 2- Middleweight Title Fight (185lbs)

"The Wasp" Wayde West defeats Donovan "Ronin" Robertson

I thought West would put up a good fight against Robertson but I figured the champ could hold on to his gold. I was wrong as West simply put on a show defeating the middleweight champion in the first round. Robertson tried and tried to get a takedown but West was able to sprawl out of each and every attempt. Not only was he able to avoid the takedown but his kicks were very impressive. West changed levels with them well, not allowing Robertson to time them and grab a takedown. West landed nineteen leg kicks which I am sure also helped him avoid the takedowns. He also landed nine body kicks and six head kicks wearing Robertson down. In the mists of head and body kicks West landed a stiff punch that put Robertson down and he was then able to pound away till the referee stopped the fight. The winner and new HFC Middleweight Champion “The Wasp” Wade West!!! He got the TKO at 3:21 of the first round via referee stoppage.

Main Card Bout Number 3- Welterweight Fight (170lbs)

Arshnoor "THE BRUTALIZER" Singh defeats Georgey "Suplex" Prendergast

I though Singh would win the fight by head kick which looking back at it, I should have known it wouldn’t be a head kick. Prendergast is a wrestler and head kicks leave you open for takedowns and Singh was not prepared to go to the ground. Singh and his camp made the right adjustments and decided to go heavy on punches and then use leg kicks to slow down the takedown attempts. Perfect game planning as Singh was able to stuff all five takedown attempts and then make Prendergast pay for the thought. Singh knocked Prendergast to the ground but he quickly got up, then Singh landed a huge hook and Prendergast went down again, this time Singh was able to pounce on him and get the referee stoppage at 1:31 of the first round winning by TKO.

Co Main Event Main Card Bout Number 4- Bantamweight Fight (135lbs)

"Nobushi" Mitsuyo Maeda defeats Ted "Diet" Coke

I had a feeling this fight would not be entertaining and honestly I was right. I figured the jet lagged Maeda would be slow and a bit out of it from the long travel right before the fight and I was certainly wrong about that one. Maeda got several takedowns in the first round but he only looked to control and hang on instead of showing us some killer instinct and trying to finish. Coke couldn’t do much but he was able to stand up only to be then taken down again. Maeda won this round with ease 10-9 scoring three takedowns on Coke.

Maeda got a takedown in the second round nice and early and once again Coke was able to rise to his feet after attempting some submission while on the ground. Then Coke went for it all going for takedowns and submissions and scoring points while looking to finish. Coke won this round clearly 10-9 which would bring the fight to 19-19 and it will now come down to who can win the next round.

I think Coke wore his self out in the second round because we did not see much from him in round three. Maeda was able to get two takedowns and after the second one Coke seemed to be ok with lying around and just trying to maintain guard. Maeda put on a little ground and pound but not much. If Coke would have put forth as much effort in the third round as he did in the second I think he would have won the round despite being takedown twice but I had to score the round for Maeda and all three judges agreed. Maeda wins the third round 10-9 and wins the fight 29-28 by way of unanimous decision.

Main Event Main Card Bout Number 5- Welterweight Fight (170lbs)

"THE BUTCHER" Karl Grossman defeats Taylor "woob woob woob" Clark

The battle of the experienced was certainly a good one. Grossman was able to dominate in the clinch in the first round and I think he got the better of the striking at range. Clark did put up a good fight in the first round but Karl Grossman was able to sail away with the first round by landing at a higher percentage and the little bit of work he did in the clinch. I gave the round to Grossman 10-9.

Clark put on a much better showing in the second staying with Grossman as the two punched and kicked each other for a while. It was hard to tell who was winning the round until Grossman was able to sink in a body lock near the end of the fight. From the clinch Grossman was able to outscore Clark in strikes and damage as Clark just wanted to break away and Karl was landing shots. I think Grossman won the round with ease but once again just because of the clinch. I have the round 10-9 for Grossman and the fight for Grossman 20-18, and if I am correct Clark will need to finish in the third.

The third round starts and the two are striking each other once again. Grossman was landing at a better percentage but I think Clark might have been doing a little more damage. Once again Grossman locks up in the clinch and shows that his dirty boxing skill is far more advanced than Clark’s. Once Clark was able to break away from the clinch Grossman knew he had the fight in the bag. Karl went on the defensive just trying not to get finished as Clark pressed forward. The third round was the closest round but I scored it once again for Grossman 10-9 leaving my score card reading 30-27. All three judges’ score cards came up the same as mine as Karl Grossman wins the fight by unanimous decision.

We had a few duds on this card, but we also had some very exciting fights. We crowned a new champion and possibly seen the last of Karl Grossman as I heard he was contemplating retirement. Mr. Monk always looks to bring in the best fights and the best match ups so seeing a few guys out matched was strange to see, but I am sure we will be back on track. Overall I still feel this was an amazing event and the fighters put on a great show but it did not have that HFC feel. Please join us for HFC 5 Breakthrough as I can tell you it that it will be one amazing show. We have guys fighting during the preliminaries that were top of the card talent a month ago. That just shows you the level of fighters Dan Monk has signed so he can bring you the very best MMA not only in Las Vegas but the world!
