WFL 16 Preview by Tony Rossi

Event Preview: WFL 16- Photirat vs Haeyhae
Warrior Fight League
2014-03-22, Helsinki, Wild Bob's Bar - Helsinki
Author:Josh James

Well this will be somewhat of a sad preview. First thing we only have seven confirmed fights for the event so far but we do have the Lightweight Title on the line and a big Light Heavyweight fight as well. Now the second thing that makes this a sad preview is it will be one of my last previews I do for WFL. I received a major job offer and I had to restrict my time somewhere and unfortunately this was one of them. I will have the Wednesday the 26th of March preview and that will be the last one. There is some good news though. Mr. James has already lined someone up to take over as the WFL writer and I am not sure when they start but I hope it will be a seamless transition with that person picking up the event on the 29th though I am not sure. Anyhow let’s get into this event.

Preliminary Bout Number 1- Heavyweight Fight (265lbs)

Luigi "The Ultimate" Fuze (2-0) {1-0} versus Mike Tyson (5-5) {0-0}

Lugi is currently undefeated and he has had one fight in the WFL and a total of two professional fights. Fuze is a purple belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and he has a wonderful wrestling background. In both of his fights he got the win by submission in less than three minutes so he is a very dangerous man. Tyson on the other hand is five and five and his style of wins is all over the place. Even though he does have a blue belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and he has two submission wins he will need to win this fight through standup. If he can keep Fuze off the mat he should be able to win this fight. With that being said I don’t think he will be able to event stuff one takedown with how good Fuze is at wrestling. I am going to pick Fuze to win this fight by submission in less than three minutes to kick off the night.

Preliminary Bout Number 2- Lightweight Fight (155lbs)

Anzhor "The Annihilator " Azhiev (8-28) {0-0} versus Rafael Inclan (7-21) {0-0}

Wow well sometimes it’s time to just call it quits and that goes for both of these guys. They have a combined record of fifteen and forty nine. With both of these fighters winning less than thirty percent of their fights it’s going to be a tossup at who will win. Both of these guys prefer the ground game and Inclan is a better Jiu Jitsu guy than Anzhor even though Anzhor has more submission victories. I am having a tough time even thinking how this fight is going to go, but I got the finish all mapped out. Azhiev wins the fight by submission in the second round.

Main Card Bout Number 1- Middleweight Fight (185lbs)

Doug "Peel" Pattersson (1-0) {0-0} versus Oscar "Onnipotent" Ozymandias (1-0) {0-0}

Both of these guys are one and o and they are also both making there WFL debut. Pattersson is a nineteen year old wrestler who has some Muay Thai training but I don’t think he is a striking threat. Oscar is a twenty five year old wrestler who has developed a decent striking game. He will want to keep this fight standing to leave no question as to who will win. If could be difficult for him to keep the fight standing since Pattersson is a much better wrestler. On the ground the fight could go either way but I think Pattersson does have a slight advantage on the ground. My prediction for this fight is Pattersson to win by submission in the second round.

Main Card Bout Number 2- Heavyweight Fight (265lbs)

"ShrimpBait" Bubba James (8-15) {0-0} versus Greg "Rubishman" Joll (4-3) {2-3}

James has good boxing and wrestling so he should be comfortable on the ground or standing up. Since he should feel good at either position he should look to capitalize where his opponent is weak and that is the stand up in this fight. If he can keep Joll standing he should be able to cost to a win. Joll does have some standup but his strength is certainly on the ground. He is a purple belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and he has some wrestling training. Three of his four wins have come by submission so we all know how good he is on the ground. Since Joll just got back to his winning ways I think he will stay on course with a win in this fight. I got Joll winning by submission in the second round.

Main Card Bout Number 3- Lightweight Fight (155lbs)

Holy Diver (9-13) {1-0, 2NC} versus Tommi "T-bomb" Talentti (8-14) {0-0}

Diver has been having a terrible time trying to make weight and he has had two no contests in his last two fights because he could not make weight. It looks as though he will not make weight again and I can’t see this fight taking place. I could be wrong and if I am I think Diver is going to win, but in my opinion I don’t see a way that this fight happens as I have no confidence that Diver makes weight. My prediction is a no contest clearly with Diver not making weight for a third time.

Co Main Event Main Card Number 4- Light Heavyweight Fight (205lbs)

Don Schmidt (5-2) {3-2} versus Kevin "Grinder" Stevens (4-1) {3-1}

Two top fighters in the Light Heavyweight division will face off in this one. Schmidt is a hard hitting boxer who has lost two of his last three fights. He is on the verge of becoming a permanent gate keeper and that is something nobody wants to be. If he can beat Stevens and a string together a few other wins he could be back in line for a title shot in the future. Stevens is four and one and his only loss was against the WFL Light Heavyweight Champion Fritz Haarmann in his last fight. Stevens is looking for a quick rebound and if he can grapple with Schmidt he should win this fight. I will not make a prediction since Don Schmidt is my fighter.

Main Event Main Card Number 5- Lightweight Title Fight (155lbs)

"Yod" Yodthanong Photirat (7-15) {2-1} versus Risto Haeyhae (3-1) {2-1}

This fight will determine the first ever Lightweight Champion in the WFL. Yod has turned his career around since coming to the WFL and a win in this one would legitimize his turn around. Risto has been amazing in his young career but we haven’t had a chance to see him against top end challengers since Diver could not make weight. This will truly be his toughest fight so far. Yod is a striker that has won five fights by TKO and he will clearly try and keep this fight standing. Risto on the other hand is a point grappler who won two of his fights by decision and he pulled out one win by submission. I think Yod will get in some shots and he will win one or two rounds but I think Risto will point out this fight and win it and the title by decision.

I can’t wait to see what happens in this title fight. There are a few other fights I am excited about but I really want to see is Diver make weight. It has been a while since he has fought since the weight issues started. Regardless this seems like a great line up of fights and there is sure to be a few surprises I am sure. Please join me next in what will be my very last WFL preview.
