HWP251: Breaker vs. Hogan! PREVIEW

Event Preview: HWP251: Breaker def HW Title!
Las Vegas Prizefighting
2012-04-25, Las Vegas, MMA Grand
Author:K Rad

Welcome, welcome one and all to the 251st HEAVYWEIGHT PRIZE FIGHTING spectacle coming to you live from Vegas. Another big week of big boys and big hits is anticipated from MMA Grand where over 17000 people will be in attendance to watch an event that comes around just far too infrequently as far as I am concerned: THE title defense. In an organisation that only has 2 weight divisions, heavy and superheavy, talking about THE title is like talking about the holy grail. When we're talking about a title bout between the current heavy and superheavyweight champions, the former to defend his belt, the latter to consolidate both titles, well now we're talking about something even greater, something more legendary, something akin to managing to mount Jessica Alba from behind in a room full of mirrors whilst you're holding a camcorder in one hand and pulling her hair with the other. You know what I mean. Let's take a look at the top 4 fights of the night:

Fedor A million ankle vs. Dante Fertit

A man who seems to be fighting every week, Ankle, is taking on a dangerous opponent, Fertit, who is looking to extend his 5 fight win streak out to 6. When it comes to the striking aspects of this fight, Ankle is the better man but still has a tendency to go to decision victories which Fertit will be hoping to capitalise on as his measly 1 KO from 17 wins isn't lending this fight towards much opportunity for him to knock Ankle out. Fertit is a grappling type and quite proficient in his submissions but the sensational wrestling of Ankle is going to make it very difficult for him to get the fight to the floor where he can work his magic. I am expecting Ankle to capitalist on this and be ready to strike back with some heavy hands and take the KO win.

Jack "The Ripper" Barton vs. Solomon "Beast Mode" Ares

Long time veteran of HWP, "The Ripper" Barton is taking on relative newcomer "Beast Mode" Ares in what is looking to be a battle of tactical maneouvering versus brute force. "The Ripper" holds a black belt in BJJ but he shouldn't expect too much opportunity to use it against the elite wrestling of Ares unless Ares has decided ground and pound is the way to go. If this is the case, the fight could go either way but I wouldn't be surprised to see this fight take place standing and the two men trade blows until one goes down. In this respect, it is a matter of chin and if both can hold out, Barton's decision win tendency may well see him through but it would be tough to bet this against Ares' 13 KOs from 14 wins. With Ares taking the height and weight advantage I think he will be able to power through his slight standup disadvantage and claim a 14th KO victory tonight and turn around the loss he conceded in his last appearance.

"Affliction Killer" Ruiner Barnett vs. Tonying Legend
Co-main Event!

Two men who have been around the block with HWP are "Affliction Killer" Barnett and Legend. Barnett is a HOF'er in his previous org where he was the undisputed LHW champion and now he has stepped it up to open heavyweight in order to show he has what it takes at the highest level. Legend for his part is on a 4 fight win streak, including a sensational flying knee win over the aforementioned Ankle. This is going to be a brilliant fight ladies and gentlemen and you can expect serious sparks to fly even if Barnett does contemplate putting his far superior jitsu to work, which will be difficult given the comparative wrestling of the two men and Barnett's much lighter frame. Legend will be putting serious power behind his striking over the technically superior "Affliction Killer" and despite being 6cm shorter I think Legend has the eye of the tiger coming into this fight and the killer instinct required to secure a knockout over the taller man.

J "Face" Breaker vs. Hulk "original banana hammock" Hogan
Main Event TITLE FIGHT!

This is a fight which has all the hallmarks of a classic in the making. A fight which will be talked about by MMA fans for decades to come. A Shamrock vs. Gracie, an Ali vs. Frasier, an Overeem vs. the Nevada State Athletic Commission. Breaker has defended his title 3 times now and has only lost once in his last 5 fights whereas Hogan reclaimed his title from the legendary Barbara Boxer and proceeded to defeat the same man another two times in a row before losing a fight to the very same man Breaker lost his only fight against. This does beg the question... when will we see Afro Samurai, the #2 p4p fighter in the world, contest for either of these titles? The man is 13 wins in a row and possibly the greatest striker the world has ever seen. But I digress, this is about "Face" Breaker and "Banana Hammock" Hogan. Elite boxing versus elite wrestling. Both men have fine knock out pedigrees and bucketloads of experience so this fight is going to be about jaw, pride and gameplan. Hogan is the much heavier man and has a slight height advantage, something which may allow him to drop the bigger bombs but may also see him tire more easily as the fight wears on. Given neither men has seen the 2nd round in their last few fights this may not be an issue and I think this gives the edge to Hogan as I top him to take out the KO win and consolidate both titles under one well stuffed banana hammock.

There it is ladies and gents, the run down of all the greatest HWP action for this weekend, live from Vegas. Make sure you join me, K-Rad as watch what may well become one of the greatest fights of all time!
