HERO 22: Rudd vs Todorov
Prelims
Lightweight Division: Joonas Muikku vs Igor Byhenikov
Muikku used a variety of kicks to take the first two rounds, while Byhenikov came back late with a strong third round, controlling the action with boxing. Unfortunately, he didn't get the finish that he needed to overcome Muikku's lead. Result: Muikku by unanimous decision
Featherweight Division: Jose Aldo vs Joao Oliveira
Oliveira showed a great chin, surviving four early head kicks. He knew he couldn't sustain that, so he took the fight to the ground, where he held a distinct advantage. He quickly moved to side control and went for a finish. After the fight, Oliveira called for a title shot. While his performance tonight was impressive, he's probably a few fights away from having a request like that granted. Result: Oliveira by 1st round submission (Armbar)
Welterweight Division: Juan Carlos Guevara vs Hooligan Nick
The first round of this fight was very close, with both fighters feeling each other out. Guevara got more active in the second and third rounds, mixing in a combination of punches and kicks. Nick stayed conservative and it cost him in the eyes of the judges. Result: Guevara by unanimous decision
Featherweight Division: Tommi Talentti vs Bryce Overton
This fight was spent mostly on the ground. These two fighters semmed pretty evenly matched in this area, exchanging submission attempts back and forth. Early in the second, Overton got Talentti's back and it looked like it might be over, but Talentti managed to escape into top position, move to side control, and lock in a fight ending move himself. Result: Talentti by 2nd round submission (Kimura)
Bantamweight Division: Floyd Stark vs Hans Olson
Olson was able to get a first round takedown and control the action, winning him the first round. Stark's takedown defense was much better in the second and he won the standup battle and the round. The third was much like the first, giving Olson the edge. Result: Olson by unanimous decision
Main Card
Welterweight Division: Jessie James vs Alexander Mankiev
James decided he wanted a ground battle, so he went for the early takedown. Mankiev showed he was no slouch on the mat, managing to sweep into top position. However, that only gave James the opportunity to try for the triangle, which he did successfully. Result: James by 1st round submission (Triangle)
Featherweight Division: Aku Juhtanen vs Pekka Pikkarainen
Pikkarainen showed superior wrestling in this one, managing to go six for six with his takedowns. On the mat, he controlled the action with some nice ground and pound and stayed active looking for submissions. He didn't succeed in finishing the fight, but maintained control throughout, which is all the judges wanted to see. Result: Pikkarainen by unanimous decision
Featherweight Division: Tyson Pearson vs Daniel Lewis
Pearson immediately went for takedowns. Lewis defended the first two, but the third landed Pearson in full mount. From there, he threw a few shots that didn't land before Lewis left an arm in a dangerous spot. It Pearson grabbed it and finished the fight. Result: Pearson by 1st round submission (Armbar)
Co-Main Event
Light Heavyweight Division: David Berkowitz vs Atte Peltola
Berkowitz was winning the first round of this fight with great boxing and a smattering of leg kicks, but he allowed a takedown to Peltola that proved to be costly. Peltola moved into half guard and looked for the kimura. Berkowitz couldn't prevent it and was forced to tap. Result: Peltola by 1st round submission (Kimura)
Main Event
HERO Featherweight Championship: Jason Rudd vs Georgi Todorov
Rudd was able to keep the fight on the feet and win the second round of this fight, but the champ gave up takedowns and paid for it in the first, third, and fourth. On the ground, Todorov was able to avoid the submissions of Rudd and counter with some viscious ground and pound. Midway through the fourth, he landed a big shot that forced Rudd to turn his back. Todorov followed up with more shots that had the ref diving in to save Rudd and give the title to the challenger. Result: Todorov by 4th round TKO (Strikes)
