 SM Fight-Liiga, one of Finland's premier MMA organizations, made a special announcement today following their sixth event last night as they made official their plans to crown the first champions across each weight class.
"This is something that's been in the works for a while, and has been a big discussion amongst our current roster." organization owner Billy Talent said in a press conference following the event.
"We didn't want to just throw the belt around early in our genesis as a company - rather, we wanted our fighters to earn the right to fight for the belt. Last nights results solidified how we see those matches playing out."
Although these decisions have been made, Talent stressed that the company was still looking to grow.
"We are still in the market for fighters; we see having a big roster as the best situation, so we can grow the business, hold more cards, and have fighters become more active. That's ultimately the goal, though we also want to offer fair fights. It isn't good for anyone if we put an experienced fighter in the cage with a young guy."
Currently, the ID restrictions for fighters is set between 384000 and 388000, as Talent believes that this is the best way to find balance.
"We want fighters who are going to come in young, and are going to grow as competitors. We are well on our way to being one of the best organizations in the world, and we're prepared to do the work to make that happen.
