HERO 30: Larsson vs Borisov

Prelims

Welterweight Division:  Charles Cooper vs Rizvan Abdurashidov

Cooper took this fight into the clinch early and worked his Muay Thai. Elbows and knees landed almost at will. He mixed in a few punches, knocking down Addurashidov with an uppercut. Rizvan managed to stand back up, but a vicious elbow sent him right back down, where the fight was finished. Result: Cooper by 1st round TKO (Strikes)

Heavyweight Division: Richard Burger vs Roy Nelson

Burger clinched up early and started throwing hard, well placed elbows. He mixed in a few takedowns as well, but spent the majority of his time working on Nelson's cut in the clinch. With Roy Nelson wearing a crimson mask, the doctor decided that it was unsafe to continue and ended the fight. Result: Burger by 1st round TKO (Cut)

Middleweight Division: Bjj Wrestler vs Dave Geerts

After a close first round and a second round that was lost to Wrestler, Dave Geerts knew that the only way to win for sure was to stop his opponent in the third. After really opening up a cut that began in the first round, Geerts connected with the killer combo that he needed, making sure that the judges would not decide this one. Result: Geerts by 3rd round TKO (Punches)

Middleweight Division: Arto Markkanen vs Chong Harper

Markkanen displayed a nice mixture of boxing and Muay Thai to dominate the striking game. He minimized the amount of success that Harper could have with his wrestling and prevented any major damage from happening on the ground. This impressed all three judges. Result: Markkanen by unanimous decision

Middleweight Division: Gerry Van Berry vs Dave Iverson

Iverson got two first round takedowns, but in both cases, Van Berry was able to get back to his feet without much damage. Late in the round, he responded with a takedown of his own and began working for an arm triange. As Iverson tried to escape, he transitioned into an armbar and made Iverson tap with just one second remaining in the round. Result: Van Berry by 1st round submission (Armbar)

Main Card

Light Heavyweight Division: Banka Jansson vs LeeAnne Marie

Marie dominated the first round with takedowns and an aggressive ground game. Jansson kept it standing for most of the second and won the standup with his striking. The third round saw more striking, but it was Marie who got the better of it this time. A big left in the clinch rocked Jansson, and a few more shots put him away. Result: Marie by 3rd round TKO (Strikes)

Welterweight Division: Jake Shields vs Teemu Yumma

Shields got the takedown early in this one and immediately started looking for submissions. Yumma did well to avoid a few kimura attempts, so Shields mixed it up and looked for a leg. He got ahold of a heel hook and Yumma was forced to tap. Result: Shields by 1st round submission (Heel Hook)

Bantamweight Division: Martin Huuhkaja vs Shazaam McDaniels

Huuhkaja got a takedown in the first round and maintained control for the whole round, easily winning the frame. McDaniels managed to keep it standing in the second and unleashed some devastating boxing. A big three punch combo rocked Huuhkaja. Shazaam kept up the pressure and put Huuhkaja out for the night. Result: McDaniels by 2nd round TKO (Strikes)

Co-Main Event

Lightweight Division: Zhijing Wang vs Igor Yakovchenko

Wang was the much more hyped fighter in this one, but Yakovchenko proved that just because nobody knows your name doesn't mean that you don't have skills. After Wang got a takedown, Yakovchenko managed to avoid a submission and scramble to get Wang's back. From there he used punches to open up Wang's defenses and grab the neck. Result: Yakovchenko by 1st round submission (Rear Naked Choke)

Main Event

HERO Heavyweight Championship: Tobias Larsson vs Boyko Borisov

Borisov came out strong, cutting Larsson to win the first round. However, Larsson used takedowns and ground control to win the next two. Heading into the championship rounds down on the scorecards, Borisov turned up the pressure. He knocked down Larsson with a big combo, then let the champ stand back up. As soon as he did, Borisov used another combo to knock Larsson out cold and claim the gold. Result: Borisov by 4th round KO (Punches)

Post Fight Press Conference

AJ Nex was beaming after seeing a night full of close fights and come from behind victories. He knew he had a really tough choice in deciding who to award bonuses to because almost every fight had at least one fighter deserving.

In the end, the awards went to:

KO of the Night: Dave Geerts

Sub of the Night: Jake Shields

Fight of the Night: Tobias Larsson vs Boyko Borisov

On Saturday, Hall of Famer Manny Pacquiao is back in the cage, defending his bantamweight crown against Joonas Mustonen. Be sure you don't miss it!
