HERO 33: Vihtala vs Sullivan
Prelims
Lightweight Division: Torben Bornholm and Valko Hai
Hai was an incredible 15 for 15 in takedown attempts in this fight. Unfortunately for the fans who paid to watch the fight, he didn't attempt much offense after scoring his takedowns. He did enough to warrant a decision, but didn't win over a lot of new fans with his lay and pray tactics. Result: Hai by unanimous decision
Welterweight Division: Puppie Lamzak vs Arttu Attila
The first two rounds of this fight were pretty close. Depending on whether the judges scored more for takedowns or clinch striking, this fight was probably either tied up or 2-0 for Attila. Knowing that simply winning the round might not be enough, Lamzak put a little extra behind his elbow strikes in the third round. One such elbow rocked Attila and a few more had him tapping for mercy. Result: Lamzak by 3rd round submission (Strikes)
Bantamweight Division: Conor Heatrt vs Artie Lange
Both of these men were determined to win or lose on the ground. They took turns scoring takedowns and both attacked with submissions from both the top and the bottom. Midway through the round, it was Lange who was able to break the defensive grappling of his opponent to score the victory. Result: Lange by 1st round submission (Kimura)
Featherweight Division: Tommi Talentti vs Aku Juhtanen
Juhtanen utterly dominated the standup in this fight. He cut Talentti early, then rocked him with a head kick midway through the first round. However, not only did Talentti manage to survive, he got the fight to the ground and locked in a triangle that ended the fight. Result: Talentti by 1st round submission (Triangle Choke)
Bantamweight Division: Floyd Stark vs John Dodson
Stark was hoping to turn things around after three straight losses and he did so in outstanding fashion. His boxing was in tip top shape, as he landed 11 of 13 punches, including a couple of nice hooks that rocked and dropped Dodson, giving Stark the much needed win. Result: Stark by 1st round TKO (Strikes)
Main Card
Heavyweight Division: Gorilla Monsoon vs Pyry Perkele
We had a pure striking match in this one. Gorilla Monsoon was more accurate with his striking, connecting with 57 punches. Perkele landed the more damaging shots, but only connected 24 times. The experts were split on who deserved the win, but the judges were in agreement: 29-28 in favor of damage. Result: Perkele by unanimous decision
Middleweight Division: Mark Murphy vs Joa Pael
Another two great fighters from the stacked middleweight division battled in this one. Murphy was much more active, but Pael stayed patient and picked his spots for big punches. The strategy paid off as he sent Murphy to the mat four times, included the straight right that KO'd the former title challenger. Result: Pael by 1st round KO (Punch)
Featherweight Division: Tyson Pearson vs Antero Wursty
Wursty displayed great takedown defense, stopping all seven of Pearson's takedown attempts. He countered with crisp boxing and effective leg kicks that got the best of his opponent. A big uppercut dropped Pearson and Wursty followed up with ground strikes until the ref jumped in. Result: Wursty by 1st round TKO (Strikes)
Co-Main Event
Featherweight Division: Jason Rudd vs Pekka Pikkarainen
When this fight stayed standing, as it did for most of the second round, Jason Rudd was in control. However, Pekkarainen was able to get it to his comfort zone on the mat often in the first and third, which was enough for him to eke out a 29-28 win on all three cards. Result: Pekkarainen by unanimous decision
Main Event
HERO Light Heavyweight Championship: Aleksi Vihtala vs Walter Sullivan
In this title fight, both men seemed content to stand and bang. Sullivan had some success with his boxing, but the more rounded striking game of Vihtala was consistently more effective. A big head kick near the end of the second round rocked Sullivan, then Vihtala threw a nasty hook to hold on to his title belt. Result: Vihtala by 2nd round TKO (Strikes)
Post Fight Press Conference
AJ Nex congratulated Vihtala on yet another HERO win. His dominance of the light heavyweight division has been nothing short of amazing. He also announced that Pekka Pikkarainen's win makes him the most challenger for Georgi Todorov's belt.
AJ Nex ended the night by handing out the night's bonus awards:
KO of the Night: Joa Pael
Sub of the Night: Tommi Talentti
Fight of the Night: Gorilla Monsoon vs Pyry Perkele
HERO will be back on Saturday night when Dimitri Kasavanov tries to regain from the lightweight title by defeating Wai Man Li. Then on September 28, HERO is off to Amsterdam. Until then, so long and see you next time.
