Welcome to the Malmi Sportshall in Helsinki for HERO 36. Tonight's main event features middleweight champ Eddie Torrez putting his title on the line against hard charging Albert Fish. Hall of Famer Jarkko Vaakku is hoping to get back on track against Hazuka Oyama in our co-main event.
Let's head inside the cage and check out the action.
HERO 36: Torrez vs Fish
Prelims
Welterweight Division: Kurttu Pelli vs Arttu Attila
Attila took two quick shots from Pelli and decided he didn't like it. He took the fight to the mat, where he had a hefty advantage. From half guard, he went for the kimura and Pelli had no way to resist. The fight ended in the very first minute. Result: Attila by 1st round submission (Kimura)
Featherweight Division: Mad Child vs Liam Nate
Liam Nate displayed strong wrestling skills in this one. His ability to get takedowns clearly won him the third round and kept the other rounds very close. However, he didn't do much with his takedowns, which allowed Mad Child to rack up points in the striking department. In the end, one judge gave it to Child and the other two ruled it even, giving HERO its first ever draw. Result: Majority Draw
Light Heavyweight Division: Banka Jansson vs Nyyrikki Takaraivo
Jansson came in the more experienced fighter and the one favored by the experts, However, when two guys stand and trade head kicks like these two did, anything can happen. Takaraivo connected with a big one, and that will leave anyone seeing stars. Result: Takaraivo by 1st round KO (Head Kick)
Light Heavyweight Division: Robert Kawasaki vs Davor Langerholc
Kawasaki is used to being the better submission artist, so facing an ADCC champion like Langerholc was something new. However, Langerholc was determined to display his other skills in this one. Instead of going for submissions, he attacked on the feet with kicks and it worked. A head kick sent Kawasaki into next week. Result: Langerholc by 2nd round KO (Head Kick)
Heavyweight Division: Pyry Perkele vs Roene Dekker
Perkele came into this one with a well rounded striking game plan, but he simply couldn't keep up with the furious pace of Dekker. Roene had him on his heels from the opening bell. Perkele's chin was strong, but Dekker eventually rocked him late in the second, then knocked him our with a huge left hook. Result: Dekker by 2nd round KO (Punch)
Main Card
Bantamweight Division: Ruslan Smirnov vs Floyd Stark
HERO newcomer Smirnov ate a few shots from Stark early, but eventually got the fight where he wanted it: on the ground. When the ref stood the fighters up, Smirnov went right back down, this time landing in mount. When Stark tried to escape, Smirnov took his back. From there, it was only a matter of time until Smirnov got his elbow under Stark's chin to choke him out. Result: Smirnov by 1st round submission (Rear Naked Choke)
Welterweight Division: Alexander Mankiev vs Dae Jung Pak
Pak's head kicks are so devastating that even the partially blocked ones he threw rocked Mankiev. With Mankiev on wobbly legs, Pak unloaded with a right hook that knocked Mankiev out and ended this one just sixteen seconds after the opening bell. Result: Pak by 1st round KO (Punch)
Featherweight Division: Tex Morgan vs Zhijing Wang
In a first round that featured a close striking battle with Morgan landing punches and Wang kicks, Wang clinched the round with a takedown. In the second, Morgan got a takedown of his own, but unfortunately, he lost the grappling battle with fellow purple belt Zhijing Wang. Wang caught him in a kimura that he couldn't get out of.. Result: Wang by 2nd round submission (Kimura)
Co-Main Event
Middleweight Division: Hazuka Oyama vs Jarkko Vaakku
Vaakku was determined to prove that his three fight losing streak was not a sign that the Hall of Famer's career was flaming out. He landed a few big kicks that cut Oyama, then pulled guard to show off the BJJ that made him famous. From his back, he locked in the triangle and got back into the win column. Result: Vaakku by 1st round submission (Triangle Choke)
Main Event
Middleweight Championship: Eddie Torrez vs Albert Fish
This one turned out to be what every promoter dreams of in a main event. Two evenly matched stars went toe to toe and let it all hang out. After two rounds, both men were leaking blood and breathing hard, but they kept swinging away. Midway through the third, Fish connected with a big head kick that knocked down Torrez. He waved the champ back to his feet and finished him with a barrage of punches. Result: Fish by 3rd round TKO (Strikes)
