Let's head inside the cage and check out the action.
HERO 38: Li vs Van Der Moot II
Prelims
Featherweight Division: Carlos Martinez vs Mike Stillao
Martinez got the better of the action in the first minute, landing a few solid punches. Stillao responded with a takedown and the fight completely turned. Martinez looked out of place on the mat, allowing Stillao to pound away. A big elbow dazed Martinez and he could no longer intelligently defend himself. Result: Stillao by 1st round TKO (Strikes)
Lightweight Division: Miko Neva vs Sven Hjernson
Hjernson showed off his improving wrestling skills in this one, blocking all seven of Neva's takedown attempts. His boxing was on full display as well. He used a nice mix of head shots, body shots, and combinations to pick apart Neva and pick up his first win. Result: Hjernson by 1st round TKO (Strikes)
Heavyweight Division: Markus Heinola vs Razor Ramone
These two came to bang. Nobody attempted a takedown. Midway through the second minute, Heinola connected with a nice jab-cross combo that cut Ramone. However, it only seemed to make Ramone angry. Ramone responded by dropping Heinola with a shot to the temple. The ref jumped in to end it. Heinola wasn't too happy about the early stoppage, but he appeared to be out of it. Result: Ramone by 1st round KO (Punch)
Welterweight Division: Puppie Lamzak vs Kaheli Sonni
In this brief contest, Sonni showed it all. Devastating standup allowed him to knock down Lamzak with a brutal counter combination. Then, on the mat, he displayed his BJJ skills, successfully locking in a kimura to finish things off. Result: Sonni by 1st round submission (Kimura)
Welterweight Division: Loki Lazerous vs Risto Pasila
Pasila opened the first round with a takedown and spent the entire five minutes pummeling Lazerous. Lazerous miraculously survived the punishment and made it to his corner. In the second, Pasila scored another quick takedown. However, this time, the worn down Lazerous couldn't absorb the shots. Halfway through the round, the ref jumped in to save the battered Lazerous. Result: Pasila by 2nd round TKO (Strikes)
Main Card
Lightweight Division: Gomi Bakanori vs Joonas Muikku
Muikku knew he wanted to stay on his feet in this one, so he leg kick heavy attack was a brilliant strategy. Bakanori wasn't outclassed on the feet by any means, but the energy he lost going for constant takedowns gave Muikku the upper hand. In the end, game planning was the deciding factor in this fight. Result: Muikku by unanimous decision
Featherweight Division: Tyson Pearson vs Tommi Talentti
After getting cut early by Pearson, Talentti decided to fight on the ground and pulled guard. Pearson didn't bite and quickly stood back up, where he was able to land a massive uppercut that stunned Talentti. All Pearson needed to do from there was pounce on his stunned opponent and land a few follow up shots to bring the ref in. Result: Pearson by 1st round TKO (Strikes)
Lightweight Division: Dimitri Kasavanov vs Igor Yakovchenko
Yakovchenko dominated the first round with his striking. His boxing was top notch and the kicks he mixed in kept Kasavanov off balance. Kasavanov got the takedown he needed, but Yakovchenko was able to reverse and spend the end of the round on top. In the second, Yakovchenko again dominated with striking, keeping the pressure up until the ref called off the fight. Result: Yakovchenko by 2nd round TKO (Strikes)
Co-Main Event
Middleweight Division: Christian Olson vs Bjj Wrestler
Despite the names, Olson appeared to be the dominant wrestler in this one. He quickly scored a takedown, then spent two minutes viciously beating Bjj Wrestler with ground and pound. A short shot to the temple rocked Wrestler. Olson kept up the pressure, moved into side control, and finished things with more strikes. Result: Olson by 1st round TKO (Strikes)
Main Event
Lightweight Championship: Wai Man Li vs Maarten Van Der Moot II
Van Der Moot seemed to be in control and on his way to getting his revenge on Wai Man Li in this one. He used his boxing skills to win the first two rounds. In the third round, Li scored a takedown, but Van Der Moot reversed nicely and wound up on top. Li immediately started working for a triangle. After several failed attempts, he switched to a guillotine, which was much more successful. Result: Li by 3rd round submission (Guillotine)
