Angle closes the distance and gets a trip takedown into side control. Nieds quickly recovers to half guard.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!

Angle is taking a breather. Nieds says something to him but it's hard to make out. Perhaps he's telling him to get on with it and actually do something.
The two fighters exchange a few words. I couldn't hear what they were saying but maybe it's more fun if you make it up yourself. Angle connects with a nice short shot to Nieds's temple.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Angle throws a looping left and ducks down for a takedown. He's got his arms around Nieds's waist but Nieds gets an underhook and avoids the takedown by throwing Angle off to one side.

Nieds rushes forward with a series of wild hooks but Angle moves out of range and avoids them all easily.

Nieds utilising some decent striking defenses from the guard, preventing the ground and pound.
The fighters are starting to get a bit slippery now, which will make submissions a bit more difficult.

This is turning into a torrid day at the office for Downtime. He's trying desperately to land a takedown but he's failing miserably and getting slapped silly on the feet to compound his misery.

This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!

Oh Downtime is still all over the place! His legs are completely gone! Will he be able to recover?!!
Madison looks to land a right hand but Downtime moved out of range.
Downtime seems to have got his legs back now.

Madison throws a good cross that connects.
Madison connects with a hook to the side of his opponent's head.
Madison leaves Downtime with his face pressed against the mat as he sprawls beautifully, defending against a solid takedown attempt.
Madison jabs away that one connects to the head of his opponent.
Madison throws an overhand right from the outside, which connects and sends Downtime stumbling backwards into the cage! Downtime bounces back off the cage towards Madison, who cracks him with a two punch combination that drops him to his knees! Madison lands two more shots before the referee has chance to intervene - what a finish! Madison celebrates with his corner as the crowd cheer loudly.

Ladies and gentlemen, after 3:40 of round 1, we have a winner by way of TKO (Punches). Jack Madison! Jack Madison retains his featherweight title!
