The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Rutten shoots in for a double leg but Rua sprawls well. That's going to sap some energy.

Rutten is looking to advance position but Rua has hit a scissor sweep - now he's on top in mount!
Rutten flailing away with punches but nothing is landing.

Both fighters are looking to counter, which isn't making for the most exciting fight in the world.

Rutten is working an open guard so Rua takes the opportunity to get back to his feet.

Rutten is breathing heavily.
Rua throws a hook to the side of Rutten's head but Rutten sees it coming and ducks under it beautifully.

Rua throws a wild combination but nothing lands.

Rua turns his hip over beautifully as he lands a nice leg kick.
Rua throws the left hand but Rutten avoids the punch easily.
Rua throws a right hand that Rutten ducks under and follows up with a left that Rutten also avoids with ease.
Rutten lands with a slapping head kick.

The cut above Bas Rutten's eye is starting to cause him problems now.
A solid leg kick lands there for Rua.
Some wild striking there from Rua.
Rutten has a takedown stuffed.

Rua throws a hook but Rutten blocks it.

Rua lands a head kick. Rutten smiles back at him and beckons him forward.

Bas Rutten's cut is absolute horrible now. This looks like something out of a horror film with blood covering both fighters.

The referee calls the doctor in to look at Bas Rutten's cut. Oh no, the doctor has called an end to the bout!
