Undercard bout

Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between Johnny Walters (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Rez Cortez (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Cortez has chosen Hit Me Baby One More Time by Britney Spears as his entrance music, which hasn't gone down very well with the crowd. Rez Cortez has the eye of the tiger tonight.

And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 5 - 5 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Rez Cortez!
The judges for this bout are Jeff Smith, Colin Fray and Paul Gruel.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Walters tries to move into range but Cortez moves to the side and lands with a nice right hand.
Cortez swings wildly with a couple of big hooks

and Walters holds on and brings the fighters into a clinch.
Walters is looking for a takedown up against the ropes. Cortez gets underhooks though and prevents the takedown attempt.
Walters tries for a takedown. No joy.

Walters works for the underhooks and manages to get a trip takedown into guard.
We could do with one of the fighters taking the initiative a bit more on the ground - they're both waiting to capitalize on a mistake.
Walters is frustrating his opponent with some stalling tactics from top position.

Walters is looking to take a break and control but Cortez is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.

Walters goes for an armbar here - this could be all over! But no, Cortez has escaped beautifully and is now on top in side control! Oh, that's unlucky for Walters but great work by Cortez.

Walters has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.

Walters unloads with some shots from mount but Cortez bucks and avoids them well.

Cortez is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though.
Cortez really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Walters. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.
Cortez tries to kick Walters off but Walters keeps his base steady and stays in half guard.
The fighters are trapped in the ropes so we're going to have a reposition here. The ref calls for a break and repositions the fighters in the center of the ring.

Walters looking for a kimura but he'll have to free his other leg if he wants to finish that. Perhaps he's just using it as a distraction technique.
Cortez is in trouble now - Walters has advanced to mount!
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Cortez has given up his back - I don’t know if this is a deliberate ploy to try and escape or if he is just struggling down there.

Walters shoots in and bounces Cortez off the ropes to secure the takedown into guard.

Cortez is very frustrated here, being controlled quite effectively by Walters.

Cortez is trying to defend against the choke here but Walters has an arm under his chin. This one might not last much longer. Walters Tightens the hold and Cortez taps out furiously! Walters displays superior BJJ to win the fight.

With the two fighters working up against the ropes, Le just misses with a elbow thrown towards Man's brow.

That was a close round. You could make an argument for either fighter but I would give it to Phan Tran Le.
Well I reckon that's a shut out for Le, winning every round. Will the judges agree? They are the ones who matter, even if they are often depressingly incompetent. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
