A momentary lapse in concentration from Powerslave enables Penguin to shoot in and score with a neat double leg. Powerslave manages to secure a closed guard as the fighters hit the mat.

Powerslave has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Penguin can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself.

I'm sure you'll be fascinated to know that I was talking to some pointless Z list celebrity before the fight and he thought that Grant Vanguard was going to win. Let's see if he was right.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, for the bantamweight championship of the world!
Introducing the champion to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 19 - 9 - 1, fighting out of Tokyo, Nik Volkov!
And introducing the challenger to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 7 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Grant Vanguard!
The judges for this bout are Ren Mimura, Kenichi Hosakawa and Yuuki Gou.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Volkov fails with a takedown attempt.
Volkov dives in and grabs Vanguard's left leg, looking for a takedown. Vanguard pushes down on Volkov's head and hops out.
Volkov misses with a takedown attempt. He shot from a bit too far out.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Nik Volkov. That's going to take a lot out of him.
A telegraphed takedown attempt from Volkov is defended easily by Vanguard.
Vanguard jabs Volkov to the body, keeping him at a distance.
Volkov tries for a takedown but Vanguard sees it coming a mile off and avoids it easily.

Vanguard gets caught napping as Volkov dives in and scores a takedown. Vanguard manages to retain guard.
The referee is asking the fighters to pick up the pace.
Volkov is working Vanguard over from the guard. He should look to pass the guard and do a little more damage with these strikes.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

It looks like we're going to have a standup here. Neither fighter is doing enough on the ground.
Vanguard throws a jab, cross combination which is slipped
and Volkov counters with a quick right hand to the jaw.
Volkov shoots in for a takedown. "Ole!" shouts Vanguard as he jumps to the side.

Vanguard misses with a left hand

and Volkov counters with a nice double leg into guard.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!

Vanguard wants to stand up but Volkov is controlling him.
Volkov wants to pass the guard but Vanguard is keeping the position.
Volkov looking to sit in guard and control but Vanguard gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top.
Vanguard's corner is telling him to maintain position.

The ref calls for a clean break and stands the fighters back up. Grant Vanguard wasn't active enough on the ground.

Volkov shoots in for a takedown but Vanguard shows good takedown defense.

Vanguard lands a nice leg kick that just misses Volkov's sensitive parts.
Vanguard turns his hip over beautifully as he lands a nice leg kick.
Volkov shoots in but no luck this time.
A solid leg kick lands there for Vanguard.
A nice inside leg kick there by Vanguard. That's going to slow Volkov down.
Grant Vanguard is looking to keep the fight on the feet at all costs.
Vanguard bobs and weaves and then throws a good body kick.
Volkov is breathing heavily.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.
Volkov shoots in with a takedown attempt and he has Vanguard pinned against the cage. Vanguard gets the underhooks and manages to circle away.
Vanguard lands a two punch combo.

Vanguard pulls out of a head kick attempt.
Vanguard stuffs the takedown.
Volkov shoots for a takedown but Vanguard saw that one coming a mile off and avoided it easily.
Volkov looks for a takedown but Vanguard sprawls well.

Vanguard lands a nice shot to the body.

Volkov takes a nice looking leg kick right on the meat of his thigh there.
Volkov shoots in for a takedown but doesn't get it.

and Vanguard counters with a slapping leg kick.
Vanguard jabs away that one connects to the head of his opponent.
Vanguard lands a front kick.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.

Volkov with poor footwork there. He got himself in a bit of a tangle, enabling Vanguard to score with a decent uppercut.

Volkov is keeping his hands low and just asking to be knocked out. Vanguard Raises his leg and lands a stunning axe kick! Volkov is out cold, face down on the mat!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 7:09 of round 1, we have a winner by way of KO (Head Kick). Grant Vanguard!

Our winner, Grant Vanguard, made sure he spent some time buttering up the crowd during his post fight interview, which will no doubt bring him a few more fans.
