Well Soni has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.

and Hicks counters with a nice uppercut.

Emelianenko throws a hook to the side of Hicks's head but Hicks sees it coming and ducks under it beautifully.

and Hicks counters with a crisp right that sends Emelianenko to the canvas! Hicks follows up with punches from the mount and this one is all over!

The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Thompson drives through with a takedown into Ryan's guard. Let's see what he can do from the top position.

Ryan had isolated an arm as going for a kimura. Thompson defends it easily.

Ryan escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Thompson gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance.
Thompson postures up and scores with a shot to the body and a follow up elbow to the head.
Ryan is working the butterfly guard. He manages to land a nice scissor sweep and is now in half guard on the top. Nice move.
Ryan wants to control but Thompson is keeping him busy.

Ryan is working for an americana but Thompson has been sneaky and has managed to get back to half guard, whilst Ryan was thinking about the submission.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Ryan throws a strike but Thompson rolls with it and manages to sweep. Now he's in guard on top.

Ryan fakes high and shoots in for a takedown but Thompson avoids it really well and circles away.
Nice takedown defense from Thompson. No joy for Ryan on that attempt.

Ryan throws a front kick aimed at Thompson's knee but Thompson avoids it well.

Thompson shoots in for a takedown from distance. He catches Ryan napping and manages to drive through into side control!
Ryan is trying to get back to half guard.
Ryan takes a couple of big shots there - the referee warns him that he has to defend himself better.
Thompson has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.
Ryan tries to get back to half guard but can't.

Thompson tries for an arm triangle. That looks pretty tight to me. Is this one over!?! Possibly, maybe, no Thompson has let go of the choke. Obviously it wasn't as tight as we thought!
Thompson works to advance to full mount. Ryan defends for a few seconds but eventually he succumbs.
Ryan can't escape the position.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!

Ryan is writhing around trying to get back to his feet.

Thompson has control of Ryan's right arm, working for a kimura. It's a bit of a token attempt though and Ryan regains control of the situation pretty easily.
Thompson lands an elbow that was bordering on illegal but the referee lets it go with a warning.
Ryan is wriggling around trying to escape.
Thompson pausing momentarily but resumes with a couple of decent strikes that do a bit of damage.
Ryan sneaks a leg back under and regains half guard and is working straight away to try and get back to guard. He hasn't managed just yet though.

Thompson wants to work for an arm triangle but Ryan is really keeping half guard well and defending the submission attempt.

Thompson seems to be working for a kimura but Ryan defends the submission attempt.

Thompson is looking for a kimura. It's going to be difficult to finish that from half guard though and Ryan defends it well.
The crowd are going absolutely nuts as the round comes to an end - what a fantastic round of action!
Ryan moves his hips nicely and gets into full guard.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Tony Thompson dominated that round.
The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action.


Thompson throws a wild body kick that Ryan sees coming a mile off.
Ryan is looking to clinch but Thompson is avoiding it.
Thompson throws a series of punches but Ryan avoids them all with ease.

Ryan manages to get an easy takedown there - catching Thompson on his heels. He'll look to pass Thompson's guard now, I'm sure.
Ryan is taking a break and basically stalling. The referee will not allow him to do that for long.
Thompson keeping moving, preventing Ryan from controlling successfully.
Ryan is in a good position here but he's just trying to control... And he's not even managing to do that successfully.

Ryan drops back for a leg but he's not going to get it - he lets go and Thompson dives on top into guard.

Hammerfist, elbow! yells Thompson's corner. There ya go! There ya go!
Both fighters really going for it on the ground here!

Ryan is throwing his legs up, looking for submissions. Thompson is aware though and is defending well.
There's a bit of a scramble here and now Ryan is on top in guard.
Ryan is looking to advance position but Thompson has hit a scissor sweep - now he's on top in mount!
Ryan tries to control the position but Thompson now has his back.
I really don't envy Ryan right now.
Thompson lands with a hammerfist to the side of Ryan's head.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!
Ryan is trying to break free.
Thompson lands a punch that was close to the back of the head but the ref thinks it's OK.

Ryan defends a rear naked choke attempt by controlling one of Thompson's arms.

Ryan rolls and manages to get back to half guard. Nicely done.
Ryan wants to improve his position but Thompson is controlling well.

Ryan tries to regain full guard. Instead though, Thompson has advanced to mount. Uh oh.
