Barnett throws out a counter right but Velasquez avoids it with no problem.
Barnett jabs Velasquez to the body, keeping him at a distance.
Barnett connects with a jab.

It looks like Cain Velasquez has been cut.
Barnett misses with a two punch combination.
A little feinted left hand from Velasquez on the counter but he doesn't commit to it.
Barnett fakes and then throws a beautiful body shot. Velasquez looks a bit winded and takes a step backwards to take a breath.
Barnett throws a couple of head shots and lands with the final one - a decent hook, which struck Velasquez on the side of the head.
Nice body punch from Barnett.
Barnett scores with a jab to the jaw.
Velasquez takes a jab right on the nose. That must have hurt but he shrugs his shoulders and looks to return the favor.
This has been an exciting period of action!
Barnett throws a nice looking combination but Velasquez bobs and weaves to avoid any damage.

Barnett misses with a few strikes there.

Barnett feints and then winds up with a huge right hand that connects perfectly and sends Velasquez sprawling to the canvas! Velasquez rolls over backwards and springs off the ropes and manages to regain his footing - how acrobatic! Oh, he's still wobbly - can Barnett finish him?!

Velasquez closes this distance looking for a takedown but Barnett circles away.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Cain Velasquez. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Velasquez is the aggressor but that punch slipped nicely by Barnett.
Velasquez shoots in looking for a double leg takedown. Barnett defends it nicely.
Barnett looks to score with a combo but nothing lands.
Barnett swings for the body but Velasquez moves out of range.
Barnett throws a hook to the body but it doesn't connect.

Barnett's coach down at The Shield was telling us pre-fight that they have been working on Barnett's balance. Obviously they view that as a key factor in the outcome of this fight.
Barnett takes a step towards his opponent and connects with a left hand, before circling away.
Velasquez displays some good footwork, moving neatly out of range as Barnett throws out the jab.
Velasquez rushes in with a sloppy looking punch
and Barnett counters with a lovely straight right hand!

Barnett loads up on a big right hand but Velasquez slips the punch.
Velasquez shoots in with a takedown attempt and he has Barnett pinned against the ropes. Barnett gets the underhooks and manages to circle away.
Velasquez shakes his hands off, looking to compose himself, but takes a jab to the jaw whilst he does it.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!
Velasquez shoots in for a takedown - he's clinched up with Barnett but Barnett pushes him off and we're back to square one.

Velasquez fails miserably with a takedown attempt.

Barnett sends Velasquez crashing to the mat with a devastating uppercut! Barnett is motioning to the referee to let Velasquez up. He wants to try and finish this one on the feet!

Velasquez darts in looking for a takedown but Barnett gets double underhooks and turns Velasquez into the ropes.
Velasquez shoots in but no luck this time.
Barnett swings away with a counter right hand but no contact made.
Velasquez drops his hands momentarily. Barnett doesn't need a second invitation, landing a shot to the temple. Velasquez staggers and falls to the mat and the ref dives in to save him from any more punishment. Velasquez doesn't seem happy with the stoppage but he was done.

Ladies and gentlemen, after 3:18 of round 1, we have a winner by way of KO (Punch). Josh Barnett!
A very excited looking Josh Barnett made sure he remembered to thank all the fans both in the arena and on the internet. He said all the coolest people spend all day on MMA websites, which got a big reaction.
