Tynin had isolated an arm as going for an omaplata. Watson is defending the submission well but is in a very vulnerable position. Tynin Is leaning forward trying to finish the omaplata but decides to abandon it, and take Watson's back instead.

Tynin has his hand under the chin of his opponent looking for the choke. He's nearly got it! This one could be all over! But no, Watson has freed his hand and lives to survive another… well, another couple of seconds at least!

The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Kalei tries a switch kick but it misses it's target.

Rua gets caught flat footed, as Kalei shoots in with a quick takedown into guard.
Rua controls Kalei momentarily but Kalei frees himself.

Rua throws a series of punches but Kalei avoids them all with ease.

Rua pulls out of a head kick attempt.
Kalei throws a looping left and ducks down for a takedown. He's got his arms around Rua's waist but Rua gets an underhook and avoids the takedown by throwing Kalei off to one side.
Rua throws a head kick that connects with a bit of head and a bit of hand.
Royce Rua is looking to keep the fight on the feet at all costs.
A really sloppy takedown attempt there from Kalei.

Rua plants his feet and lands a nice head kick!
Kalei throws a looping left and ducks down for a takedown. He's got his arms around Rua's waist but Rua gets an underhook and avoids the takedown by throwing Kalei off to one side.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Pika Kalei. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Rua feints with a shoulder and throws a nice leg kick to Kalei's calf.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!
Rua throws a sloppy head kick and Kalei moves out of range easily.

Kalei throws a combination but comes up with nothing but fresh air.

Kalei darts in and lands a nice takedown into half guard.
Rua won't allow Kalei to pass to mount.

Kalei has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.
Kalei wants to get back to his feet.
Rua is looking to escape.

Kalei escapes and gets back to his feet.
Kalei tries to close the distance and clinch up against the cage but Rua paws at him with a jab and circles away.
Rua throws a right high kick that is partially blocked by Kalei.

It looks like Pika Kalei has been cut.
Rua lands with a nice body kick.
Kalei shoots in and drives through. Rua sprawls well.
Kalei will have to do better than that with his takedown attempts.
A jab-cross combination lands for Rua and sends Kalei crashing to the mat! Rua follows him down to the mat - Kalei regains half guard but he's not out of trouble yet!

The fighters are battling for position here. Kalei manages to regain full guard. Nice work.

Kalei had isolated an arm as going for an omaplata. Rua is defending the submission well but is in a very vulnerable position. Kalei Is leaning forward trying to finish the omaplata but decides to abandon it, and take Rua's back instead.
Kalei seems to have got his legs back now.
Rua has his hands over his head blocking the strikes from Kalei.
Rua is in a world of trouble here. He's outmatched on the ground here and he'd better get Kalei off his back sharpish unless he wants to be submitted.

Rua is trying to get back to his feet but he's not managed it yet.

Kalei has got his arm under Rua's chin working for the choke… has he got it? It looks pretty tight! Oh! Rua has spun round into Kalei's guard beautifully! Well done that man!

Kalei wants to get back to full guard.
Kalei tries to strike from the bottom but it doesn't land.
Rua seems content to maintain position for now, rather than mounting any offense.

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.

Rua stands up from half guard.
Kalei shoots in for a takedown. "I don't think so" says Rua as he avoids it easily.
Rua connects with a hook to the side of his opponent's head.
Rua moves into range and throws a combination. A nice jab followed by a hook to the body.
Ouch! a nice leg kick from Rua, right into the meat.
Kalei throws a looping overhand right but Rua ducks down to avoid it.

Rua trying to keep a closed guard but Kalei is proving a slippery customer.
Kalei throwing elbows and punches but not connecting, as Rua works some decent striking defense from the bottom.

Rua is looking to stand up but Kalei isn't so interested in that idea.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Rua preventing the ground and pound from doing any damage.

Kalei drops back, looking for a kneebar! Rua looks panicked! The fighters roll across the mat, one looking to finish, one looking to escape. Rua looks to have wriggled free... Yes, he's got his leg free and he's dived into side control! Good work there from Rua!
Kalei is positioning himself to get back to half guard.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Royce Rua dominated that round.
The cut man is working on Pika Kalei's cut.
The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action!



Kalei closes the distance and gets a double leg, slamming Rua to the mat! Rua manages to get full guard.
Kalei tries to free his leg and advance position but Rua is retaining full guard.
Kalei missing there with some ground and pound from the guard.
Kalei forces his way into half guard.
Rua tries to get to full guard but Kalei has control of the leg.
Kalei thumps the canvas. Not on purpose obviously - he just missed Rua's head.
Rua tries to kick Kalei off but Kalei keeps his base steady and stays in half guard.

Kalei has hold of the far side arm. He's working for the Kimura, can Rua defend it? Kalei steps over the head and cranks it - Rua is tapping out! That was textbook stuff right there - nice submission victory for Kalei!
