PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Big D (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Jeff Kennedy (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). D comes into the arena with Nine Inch Nails - The Great Destroyer blaring out of the sound system. Both these fighters are unbeaten, so somebody's 0 has got to go!Over to our ring announcer for the fighter introductions!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 5 rounds, for the heavyweight championship of the world!
Introducing the champion to my left, fighting out of the red corner.

And introducing the challenger to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 6 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Jeff Kennedy!
The judges for this bout are Gregory Folan, Yves DeLean and Elvis Blanc.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Kennedy throws a combination but it was largely blocked by D.
A punch combination from Kennedy misses.
D dodges the punch combination from Kennedy.
D slips a straight right by Kennedy.

D gets the takedown into side control.

D swings around for an armbar but Kennedy sees it coming a mile off and turns beautifully into D's guard.
D trying to keep a closed guard but Kennedy is proving a slippery customer.
D wants to stand up but Kennedy is controlling him.
Kennedy is taking a break and basically stalling. The referee will not allow him to do that for long.

D looking to hit a scissor sweep but Kennedy is one step ahead there.
D will have to put a bit more behind his punches if he's going to do any damage from this position.
D looking to sweep here. No luck so far.
D trying to keep a closed guard but Kennedy is proving a slippery customer.
D trying to punch from his back but it's not doing any damage.

A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.

It looks like we're going to have a standup here. Neither fighter is doing enough on the ground.
D looks for a takedown here. Will he get it? Kennedy is fending him off so far but D persists. Nope, Kennedy circles away and we're back to standing.
Good exchange - Kennedy coming out on top.
D ducks under an overhand right and circles away with a smile on his face.

D shoots in for a takedown and gets it. Let's see what he's got on the mat.

D drops back, looking for a kneebar! Kennedy looks panicked! The fighters roll across the mat, one looking to finish, one looking to escape. Kennedy looks to have wriggled free... Yes, he's got his leg free and he's dived into side control! Good work there from Kennedy!
D tries to work a leg under to get back to half guard but Kennedy wriggles his own leg back out and remains in side control.
D is breathing heavily.
A bit of a lull in the action. I'm sure it will pick up again soon... even if the ref has to physically pick them up and put them back on their feet.

D is looking for a sweep.
D is letting Kennedy control him for a moment.
D tries to work a leg under to get back to half guard but Kennedy wriggles his own leg back out and remains in side control.
D is working hard here to advance position.

The crowd are starting to boo a lack of action.

The fighters are starting to get a bit slippery now, which will make submissions a bit more difficult.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Kennedy moving around in side mount but really he's just happy to control for now.

Oooh a lovely combination from Kennedy sends D down but not out. Kennedy dives into side control looking to finish.


It looks like Big D has been cut.
This has been an exciting period of action!
Kennedy blocks the strikes from D.
D is looking for a sweep.
Kennedy takes a little break here. D wants to take advantage but he is being controlled well.
D tries to bench press Kennedy off him but Kennedy keeps the position.
D misses with an elbow from the bottom.
A lull in the action here as Kennedy stalls from top position.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

D is looking for a sweep.
Kennedy blocks the strikes from D.

The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.
Kennedy takes a little break here. D wants to take advantage but he is being controlled well.

Despite being in the dominant position, Jeff Kennedy just isn't active enough and the referee decides to stand the fighters back up.
D ducks under a wild hook from Kennedy.
A jab-cross combination lands for Kennedy and sends D crashing to the mat! Kennedy follows him down to the mat - D regains half guard but he's not out of trouble yet!


D is rocked!

D is looking to sinch up a gullotine here but Kennedy pulls his head out easily.

D looking to work for a kimura from the bottom.
Kennedy is pressing down on D's thigh, looking to free his foot. D is holding on for now.

The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.
Kennedy is working hard to pass the guard. He's done it - he's now in full mount! Trouble for D!
D keeping his composure momentarily, calmly looking to get back to half guard.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.

Jeff Kennedy showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.

No joy there for Kennedy, who threw a few shots but didn't land.
Kennedy keeps the fight standing with a nice sprawl.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Kennedy lands a jab-cross combination.

D shoots in for a takedown! He's got it and he's managed to land in full mount! That's better than D was expecting from the takedown attempt, I'm sure!

D is trying to work for a kimura. He's got his hands clasped together - this could be trouble! No, Kennedy has managed to free his arm - good work.
Kennedy moves his hips nicely and gets into full guard.

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.
Kennedy has his hands on D's head, controlling the position.

D is holding a leg here, probably looking for an ankle lock - he drops back and goes for it! Kennedy is in trouble! Is it all over??? No! Kennedy has escaped and now he's on top!

D looking to sweep using the butterfly guard but Kennedy puts pay to that idea as he passes nicely into half guard.

The fighters are battling for position here. D manages to regain full guard. Nice work.
Kennedy is pushing down on D's leg trying to pass to half guard. D is fighting to maintain full guard but Kennedy has managed to sneak the leg through.

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.
Kennedy stalling.
D tries to regain full guard. Instead though, Kennedy has advanced to mount. Uh oh.
D is trying desperately to improve position.

The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action!


Kennedy throws a right and a left that both miss.
Jeff Kennedy seems to be getting the better of the standup.
D shoots in for a takedown - he's clinched up with Kennedy but Kennedy pushes him off and we're back to square one.
Kennedy looks to land a combination but D avoids it well.
Kennedy avoids the clinch attempt nicely.
Jeff Kennedy seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Kennedy misses with a body shot. Nice footwork from D.

It's got to the stage where if one of these guys blows hard enough, the other might fall over.

Kennedy lands an overhand left. A wild punch that just about connected.
D shoots in for a takedown but doesn't get it.
Kennedy lunges in with swinging rights and lefts but D circles away quickly and effectively.
Kennedy lands three nice shots there - that looked like it hurt!

Kennedy cracks D with a nice right hand that draws applause from the crowd.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!
Kennedy will need to tighten up his combinations if he doesn't want to gas himself out, swinging at thin air.
Kennedy lands a jab followed by a vicious hook that sends D sprawling to the canvas. Kennedy follows him down, looking for the kill. Can D hang on?
Oh D is still in real trouble! Will he be able to recover?!!
D wants to control the action here but instead Kennedy manages to pass to full mount!
D seems to have got his legs back now.

D is desperately trying to get back to half guard.

My god... these two guys really need to pick up the pace or everyone will leave to go get a beer.
D is looking to improve his position but Kennedy isn't that keen on the idea.

D is trying to escape the mount.
Kennedy has been the more effective fighter overall so far.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
D tries to hold on but Kennedy pushes him away.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

The minute break is over - no more time for sponges and pep talks - back to the action! This is the final round!


Kennedy takes a step towards his opponent and connects with a left hand, before circling away.
Kennedy feints and then winds up with a huge right hand that connects perfectly and sends D sprawling to the canvas! D rolls over backwards and springs off the cage and manages to regain his footing - how acrobatic! Oh, he's still wobbly - can Kennedy finish him?!


D is rocked!

D bobs and weaves into range and then changes levels and scores with a nice takedown into side control.
This has been an exciting period of action!
D with the ground and pound but Kennedy regains half guard under the barage of strikes.
D not landing any meaningful shots this time.

D is looking for a kimura here.
Both of our modern day gladiators look out of it here - an gruelling 5 rounds of action taking it's toll on them, no doubt.
Kennedy regains full guard, whilst avoiding punches from D.

D stops Kennedy from standing up.
Kennedy pulls D in close to his closed guard and prevents D from doing any damage or advancing position.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.
D trying to control but Kennedy is working from the bottom.
Kennedy is trying to control the position but D postures up.
D passes Kennedy's right leg, so he's now in half guard.

D is looking for a kimura. It's going to be difficult to finish that from half guard though and Kennedy defends it well.
D prevents Kennedy from improving his position.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Kennedy is trying to maintain the position but D is very close to passing his half guard.
Jeff Kennedy is fighting for a decision here - he's started to take the cautious approach.
D takes advantage of the dominant position to land a couple of big hammer fists.
D tries to pass to full mount but Kennedy defends it.

The crowd are starting to boo a lack of action.
D throwing shots but Kennedy is blocking nicely.
Kennedy wants to improve his position but D is controlling well.

Neither fighter is doing enough for the referee's liking and he's decided to stand them back up.
Kennedy scores with a big left there. The judges will like that one.
Kennedy lands a vicious shot with the stealth of a sniper and the strength of a viper. Are vipers that strong? I can think of lots of things that are stronger than a viper - not many rhyme with sniper though.
D takes an uppercut right on the button but keeps his composure.
D shoots in for a double leg but Kennedy sprawls well. That's going to sap some energy.

And that's the end of the fight!
Jeff Kennedy comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
Well Kennedy has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
