PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between DJ Cannonier (ranked 7836 p4p, 0 weight class) and Bryan Robson (ranked 6115 p4p, 0 weight class). DJ Cannonier looks tired to me. Hopefully he has got enough gas left in the tank to put in a good performance.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 2 - 0, fighting out of London, DJ Cannonier !
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 1 - 0, fighting out of London, Bryan Robson!
The judges for this bout are Daniel Bishop, William Gold and Paul Tew.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Robson throws a sloppy head kick

and Cannonier counters with a shoot takedown. Robson fights it but they end up in guard.
Cannonier looks exhausted already! Oh dear, he should have come in in better shape than this!
Robson pulls Cannonier in close to prevent any damage.
Robson is trying to control the position but Cannonier postures up.
Robson tries to land a sweep but no joy.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Robson managing to control the position.
Robson doesn't do any damage with a couple of strikes from the bottom.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Cannonier shoots in with a takedown attempt and he has Robson pinned against the cage. Robson gets the underhooks and manages to circle away.

Cannonier gets caught on his heels momentarily as he allows Robson to score an easy takedown into full guard.
Cannonier wants to get back to his feet but he's too absorbed in his own little project and Robson manages to pass to side control.

Robson is working hard to pass the guard. He's done it - he's now in full mount! Trouble for Cannonier !
Cannonier has improved his flexibility recently so we will have to see if he can use that to his advantage.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Robson fails to move to back control.
Robson trying to control but Cannonier is having none of it.
Robson might have to switch it up a bit here because his efforts to control Cannonier haven't been going to plan, at least at the current moment in time.

That's three minutes gone in the round.

Robson is standing up out of mount! Strange tactic there - he must really want this one on the feet!

Robson pushes Cannonier up against the cage in a clinch.

Robson's corner calls for him to break the clinch, which he does.
Robson fails with a takedown attempt from distance.
Robson slaps away a takedown attempt from Cannonier , before circling back to the center of the mat.

Robson gets in close and instigates a clinch.
Robson is looking for a takedown up against the cage. Cannonier gets underhooks though and prevents the takedown attempt.
Robson can't get the takedown.
DJ Cannonier has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Bryan Robson.

Cannonier tries to pull guard but Robson forces him back to his feet, against the cage.
Robson is pressed up against the cage. Cannonier has hold of a leg and is looking to drag Robson down to the mat. Robson avoids the attempt though and has circled away. We're back to striking at a distance.
Robson misses with a jab, cross combination.
Robson has been working on his striking defense in training and it's paying off as Cannonier is landing a low percentage of strikes.
Cannonier tries to drive through with a takedown attempt but Robson defends well and Cannonier ends up having to push Robson into the cage where they will battle it out in the clinch.

Cannonier gets taken down but at least he's managed to land in guard.
Robson wants to control from the top but Cannonier keeps moving.
Robson tries to free his leg and advance position but Cannonier is retaining full guard.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Bryan Robson dominated that round.
The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action!


Cannonier shoots in for a takedown but Robson shows good takedown defense.

Robson drives through with a takedown into guard.
Robson is stalling in the full guard.
Cannonier tries to land a sweep but no joy.
Robson won't allow Cannonier to get back to his feet.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Robson slips nicely into half guard.

Robson is looking for a kimura but Cannonier is holding onto that half guard position, so it's hard for Robson to get the leverage.
Robson has been the more effective fighter overall so far.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

Well, if Robson is going to just lie there, perhaps we should talk about what we're having for dinner tonight… I'm having a ham and pineapple pizza… Yum. Can't wait.
Cannonier is staying active underneath Robson, who seems content to just control the action from this position.

Robson stands, ready to strike. The ref makes him back up and allows Cannonier to get to his feet.
Cannonier wants to clinch

and Robson counters with a driving takedown into guard. Nice work there by Robson.
Robson slows down the pace of the fight, as he sits in guard.
Cannonier keeping moving, preventing Robson from controlling successfully.
Bryan Robson has got the better of the ground game so far.

Cannonier is active off his back here, looking for submissions.
Robson is taking a break and basically stalling. The referee will not allow him to do that for long.
Cannonier is trying to keep Robson in close.

Hammerfist, elbow! yells Robson's corner. There ya go! There ya go!

The referee has stepped in and called for a break in the action. We'll restart on the feet.

Robson instigates a clinch.

Robson's corner calls for him to break the clinch, which he does.
Cannonier shoots in for a takedown. "I don't think so" says Robson as he avoids it easily.
Robson throws a fast counter high kick but Cannonier manages to duck under it in time.
Cannonier takes a body punch but keeps moving.
Cannonier stuffs the takedown.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
The fight stays on the outside here - Cannonier looks like he's thinking about clinching though.
Robson displays good takedown defense there as he swats away a double leg from Cannonier .
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for DJ Cannonier . That's going to take a lot out of him.
Cannonier shoots in and drives through. Robson sprawls well.

Robson moves into range and clinches up with Cannonier .
Robson wants a takedown but no success here.
Cannonier tries to take the fight to the ground by pulling guard but can't manage it.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!

Cannonier breaks the clinch and we're back to striking at distance.
Cannonier needs to keep his hands up - Robson had a free shot at his head there.

Robson is looking for a takedown here. He's shot in and has managed to get it, finishing up in Cannonier 's half guard.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Bryan Robson showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action. This is the final round!


Robson stuffs the takedown attempt from Cannonier . Cannonier gets slowly back to his feet.

Robson drives through with a really nice takedown into side control.
Cannonier tries to wriggle free to get back to his feet but he's given up his back! Oops.

Both fighters are breathing heavily.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Cannonier is defending well here and trying to improve his position.

Cannonier takes a big shot to the side of the head.
Robson lands with a couple of good shots - one to the side of the head and one questionable shot that could be viewed as to the back of the head but the referee lets it go.
Robson has the hooks in. Cannonier is trying to push off one leg but he has to do so cautiously to avoid being submitted.

Robson trying to secure his dominant position for a moment - making sure Cannonier doesn't escape.
Robson wants to control the position but Cannonier frees himself and scrambles - Robson manages to regain control in side control.
Cannonier is positioning himself to get back to half guard.
Cannonier wants to control but Robson postures up.

Robson decides to stand back up. Robson steps back and let's Cannonier get back to his feet.
Robson fakes high and shoots in for a takedown but Cannonier avoids it really well and circles away.
Cannonier fails with a takedown attempt.
DJ Cannonier is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.
Robson throws a nice looking combination but Cannonier bobs and weaves to avoid any damage.
Robson tries a switch kick but it misses it's target.

Cannonier shoots in and gets a takedown into Robson's guard.

That's four minutes gone in the round.

Cannonier avoids a guillotine attempt easily.
Cannonier stopping the sweep attempt from Robson.
Cannonier controlling from the top position.
Robson pulls Cannonier in close to prevent any damage.
DJ Cannonier has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!
Bryan Robson is fighting for a decision - hopefully he's judged it right and he's actually winning the fight.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!

Cannonier drops back looking for a heel hook - he quickly realises he's not going to get it but Robson manages to dive on top of him before he can escape and now Cannonier has Robson in his guard.


And that's the end of the fight!
Bryan Robson comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
Well Robson has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
