PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a bantamweight MMA rules bout between Joseph Chainer (ranked 4818 p4p, 0 weight class) and Ethan De Swardt (ranked 4648 p4p, 381 weight class). We have two fighters making their debuts here, so let's see who comes out of this one with their first professional victory.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the bantamweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Joseph Chainer!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Ethan De Swardt!
The judges for this bout are Ryoma Takatsuka, Micheangelo Fripello and Jeff Smith.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Chainer has closed the distance and engaged De Swardt in a clinch.
Chainer lands an elbow inside that De Swardt shrugs off.

Chainer gets control of De Swardt's arms and successfully pulls guard. Chainer will no doubt be looking for submissions off his back.

Chainer working for a triangle but De Swardt defends it easily.
Chainer striking off his back but it's not causing De Swardt any problems.
De Swardt tries to free his leg and advance position but Chainer is retaining full guard.
Chainer throws a couple of shots from the bottom but they don't land.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
De Swardt wants to control from the top but Chainer keeps moving.

Chainer has an active guard here but De Swardt has managed to pass into half guard.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Let's hope that De Swardt has the urge to step up the pace any second now because for the last 15 or 20 seconds he's just been holding on tight.
The referee is pacing around the two fighters - he looks like he's thinking about a standup.

The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.
Chainer has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. De Swardt is working away from the top position though.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.
A really sloppy takedown attempt there from Chainer.
Chainer misses with a takedown attempt. He shot from a bit too far out.
Chainer shoots in for a takedown but doesn't get it.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Joseph Chainer. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Chainer fails to land with the punch combination there - jab, cross, hook, miss, miss, miss.
A nice side step and De Swardt releases a counter shot to the body, but it doesn't find it's home.

De Swardt slaps away a takedown attempt from Chainer, before circling back to the center of the mat.
Chainer is breathing heavily.
De Swardt fails with an attempt to clinch.

De Swardt shoots in looking for a single leg takedown. Chainer is trying to defend but De Swardt finishes it well and ends up in half guard. Let's see if he can advance position further.
Chainer has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. De Swardt is working away from the top position though.

De Swardt seems to be looking for submissions.
Neither fighter is being very active at the moment, with De Swardt in particular looking to stall.

De Swardt prevents Chainer from improving his position.

De Swardt is trying to work for a kimura. This could be trouble! No, Chainer has managed to free his arm - good work.
De Swardt tries to pass the half guard into mount. Chainer knows what he's doing though and prevents the attempt.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!

De Swardt wants to work for an arm triangle but Chainer is really keeping half guard well and defending the submission attempt.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Ethan De Swardt dominated that round.
The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action!


De Swardt pivots as if he's going to throw a leg kick but stops half way.
Chainer is looking to counter with a shot to the body.

De Swardt moves into the clinch.
The referee calls for De Swardt to work.
De Swardt is a painfully thin specimen of a man. You do wonder whether a good body kick would snap him clean in two.
De Swardt gets double underhooks to prevent a takedown attempt from Chainer.
De Swardt tries to take the fight to the ground by pulling guard but can't manage it.
De Swardt tries for a takedown but Chainer manages to get underhooks.

De Swardt keeping a good distance there, avoiding the body shot.

De Swardt gets tackled into the cage by Chainer. Chainer maintains the clinch.

De Swardt looking to stall.
De Swardt is trying to maintain a safe position but Chainer gets an underhook and turns De Swardt into the cage.
De Swardt tries a body shot but Chainer blocks it.
De Swardt can't get the takedown.
Joseph Chainer has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Ethan De Swardt.
Chainer drops to a knee looking for a takedown but De Swardt gets the underhooks and prevents it.
De Swardt is defending well against a takedown attempt.

Chainer breaks the clinch.

De Swardt shoots in and bounces Chainer off the cage to secure the takedown into guard.
Chainer wants to stand up but De Swardt is controlling him.

Chainer is trying to keep De Swardt in close.
Chainer looking to sweep using the butterfly guard but De Swardt puts pay to that idea as he passes nicely into half guard.
De Swardt not doing much here.
Chainer knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for De Swardt on the ground.
Chainer is trying to stand up here but De Swardt is controlling him well.

Chainer is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though.
De Swardt passes to side control.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.
De Swardt remains in side control and seems content to stay there. It's a versatile position from which he can work both strikes and submissions, whilst maintaining that control, so maybe he'll sit here for a while.
De Swardt tries to get to his feet but he's trapped momentarily.

De Swardt is looking for a kimura. He might have it! No, Chainer has escaped the position, nice work there.

De Swardt wants to control the pace but Chainer is squirming around nicely.
De Swardt looking to control and managing it successfully.

Chainer takes a big shot to the head but keeps on trying to improve his position.

De Swardt looking to secure an arm triangle but Chainer defends it well.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Ethan De Swardt showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action. And we move into the final round!


Chainer avoids the head kick by De Swardt.
No luck for Chainer with that takedown attempt.
De Swardt is definitely looking for the counter takedowns here.

Chainer has managed to clinch.
De Swardt is trying to break the clinch but Chainer is controlling him.

Chainer successfully pulls guard.
De Swardt tries to stand but Chainer is controlling from the bottom.
De Swardt is in close to Chainer's body, working some short punches and elbows.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Chainer has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but De Swardt can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself.
Chainer is trying to stand up but he's not managed so far.

Chainer isolates an arm and boxes in a triangle. De Swardt stacks Chainer on his neck as he steps over and passes to the side. He's now in a much more dominant position where he can look to do some serious damage. Nice move by De Swardt!
Both fighters are breathing heavily.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd.
You can see the frustration on Chainer's face, being in this tough position on the bottom.
De Swardt tries to stand but Chainer is controlling his head.
Chainer is looking for a sweep.
De Swardt controls the position from side control.
De Swardt throwing strikes but missing, from side control.

That's three minutes gone in the round.

De Swardt has hold of Chainer's arm. He's looking for a kimura. Chainer seems comfortable defending it but De Swardt has shifted his position slighty and is cranking on the arm! Chainer is real pain and he's forced to tap out! Chainer is disgusted with himself for not defending it better but De Swardt couldn't care less - he's delighted!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 3:13 of round 3, we have a winner by way of Submission (Kimura). Ethan De Swardt!
