PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between John Starman (ranked 2171 p4p, 247 weight class) and Dave Brooksbank (ranked 1924 p4p, 225 weight class). Starman comes to the cage accompanied by David Bowie - Starman. I'm sure you'll be fascinated to know that I was talking to some pointless Z list celebrity before the fight and he thought that Dave Brooksbank was going to win. Let's see if he was right.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 17 - 15 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, John Starman!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 16 - 28 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Dave Brooksbank!
The judges for this bout are Topper Green, Skip Squint and Francis DeMontford.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Starman defends well against a solid takedown attempt from Brooksbank.
Brooksbank shoots in for a takedown but Starman shows good takedown defense.
Starman fakes a head shot and lands one to the body.
Starman scores with a decent looking hook.
Starman misses the jab.

Starman darts in and clinches Brooksbank up against the cage.

Starman breaks the clinch.

Brooksbank takes the fight into the clinch.
Brooksbank tries to pull guard but can't drag his opponent to the mat. Starman just stands there and leans against the cage.
John Starman has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Dave Brooksbank.

Starman breaks the clinch and we're back to striking at distance.

Starman throws a blind hook that connects with the side of Brooksbanks head.
I was talking to Starman's coach per-fight and he was telling me that they'd been working on the clinch in the runup to this fight.

Starman works for the underhooks and manages to get a trip takedown into guard.

Brooksbank bucks up whilst keeping hold of a body lock, managing to reverse the position. Now he's in top in Starman's guard.

A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.

The referee looks like he's ready to step in and stand the fighters back up.

A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Brooksbank accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Brooksbank wants to pass the guard but Starman is keeping the position.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.

Starman throws out a powerful jab.

Brooksbank gets taken down but at least he's managed to land in guard.
Starman throws a big elbow that misses.
Starman wants to control from the top but Brooksbank keeps moving.

Starman got a little sloppy there for a moment and Brooksbank has worked his way into a loose triangle - can he finish it?! No, Starman has managed to get both his arms back between Brooksbank's legs - danger averted.

Starman postures up to throw the ground and pound strikes but they don't connect.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Brooksbank has an active guard here but Starman has managed to pass into half guard.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action!

Starman is working for an escape here. He's hooked one of Brooksbank's legs and he's managed to sneak out and take Brooksbank's back!

The referee has decided to stand the fighters back up, so we'll restart on the feet.
Brooksbank tries to bum rush Starman with a series of wild strikes but Starman uses good footwork to avoid the assault.
Brooksbank moves into range and throws a combination. A nice jab followed by a hook to the body.
Starman throws a right and a left that both miss.
Brooksbank misses with a double jab.
Starman moving in and out of range nicely, whilst landing the scoring shot.

Brooksbank tries to close the distance and clinch up but Starman swats him away and circles back towards the center.
Starman was looking to counter that move with a punch but didn't quite pull the trigger.

Starman tries to land a sweep but no joy.
Starman lands a beautiful sweep and he's now moved into his opponent's guard.

This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!

A close second round but Dave Brooksbank will probably get the nod - 10:9.
The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action! This is the final round!
