PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a super heavyweight MMA rules bout between Jake Tuipasa (ranked 4588 p4p, 0 weight class) and Frank Long (ranked 25729 p4p, 0 weight class). Frank Long told me before the fight that he's been watching a lot of DVDs so let's see if that helps him in this one! I can't wait to find out!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the super heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Jake Tuipasa!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Frank Long!
The judges for this bout are Damien Edna, John Mangel and Ben Watson.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Long moves into range and clinches up with Tuipasa.
Both guys are working to get underhooks.
Long is looking for a takedown.
Come on Long - let's have some action - none of this stalling nonsense.
Tuipasa can't get the takedown.
Long throws a punch but it's blocked by Tuipasa.

Tuipasa breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat.

The fight moves into the clinch position.
Long is trying to push Tuipasa away but Tuipasa has him pressed against the cage, so he's going nowhere.

Long decides to pull guard.
Tuipasa controls from within his opponent's guard.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Tuipasa prevents Long from getting back to his feet.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Tuipasa stays in close to Long's body and controls the position.

Tuipasa stands up from Long's guard - Tuipasa perhaps looking for a knockout.
Tuipasa darts in looking for a takedown but Long gets double underhooks and turns Tuipasa into the cage.

Long clinches up with Tuipasa and pushes him back against the cage.

Tuipasa pulls guard effortlessly.
Tuipasa is adopting a defensive guard.
Tuipasa might be looking to lock onto one of his opponent's long limbs for a submission, whilst we're on the ground.

The fighters are working up against the cage. Tuipasa manages to wriggle his way back to his feet, so the fighters are now clinched against the cage.
Tuipasa tries to throw a body punch but Long avoids it by throwing Tuipasa back against the cage.

Tuipasa successfully pulls guard.
Long is looking to stand up but Tuipasa won't let him.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Long preventing the sweep.

Long got a little sloppy there for a moment and Tuipasa has worked his way into a loose triangle - can he finish it?! No, Long has managed to get both his arms back between Tuipasa's legs - danger averted.
Long trying to control the position from guard on top but Tuipasa is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Long might have to switch it up a bit here because his efforts to control Tuipasa haven't been going to plan, at least at the current moment in time.
Long is fighting to break Tuipasa's control of his arms but Tuipasa is doing a good job of controlling the position at the moment.
Long not doing a lot at the moment. He'll have to show some more aggression or the fight will get stood up.
We may be looking at a referee standup if the pace doesn't pick up soon.
Long postures up.

The referee has decided to stand the fighters back up, so we'll restart on the feet.
Danga de danga de dang - Long scores with a four punch combination!
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.

Long pushes Tuipasa up against the cage in a clinch.
Long wants to break free. God knows he wants to breaaaak freeee.

Tuipasa lands a nice knee to the body.
Tuipasa could do with losing a few pounds - he looks very soft around the mid section, to put it politely.
Long looks winded!

Tuipasa ties up his opponent against the cage and manages to drag the fight down to the ground. Tuipasa no doubt will be looking to work submissions from his guard.
Tuipasa manages to sweep nicely, so he's now on top. Long manages to get himself to full guard.


Tuipasa gets to his feet. Long looking to butt scoot but the ref puts an end to that. On your feet son!
Tuipasa darts in looking for a takedown but Long gets double underhooks and turns Tuipasa into the cage.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Jake Tuipasa. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Tuipasa looking to throw a kick but he's pulled out of it.
Long defends well against a solid takedown attempt from Tuipasa.
Tuipasa misses with a body shot. Nice footwork from Long.
Tuipasa tries to land a leg kick but Long saw it coming and moves away.
Tuipasa misses the shot to the body.
Long fakes a jab and then connects with a hook.
Long swats away the attempt to clinch by Tuipasa.

A telegraphed takedown attempt from Tuipasa is defended easily by Long.
Tuipasa shoots in but no luck this time.
Tuipasa tries to close the distance and clinch up against the cage but Long paws at him with a jab and circles away.
Tuipasa fails to land the takedown.
Long dives in for a single leg takedown but Tuipasa sprawls and the fighters end up clinched against the cage.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.

Long gets in close and instigates a clinch.
A short uppercut from Long.

Tuipasa breaks the clinch.
Tuipasa closes the distance and clinches up with Long, looking for a takedown. Tuipasa pushes Long against the cage but Long circles to the side and manages to break the clinch.
Long let fly with a counter punch to the body but it didn't land.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

A close round but Frank Long will probably get the nod.
That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action.

Long tries to break free but Tuipasa pushes him back against the cage.
A real battle for position is taking place between these two warriors.
Tuipasa is working on a leg, looking for a takedown but Long is defending well.
Tuipasa is trying to pull guard but being pressed up against the cage enables Long to keep the fight standing.
Long has had enough of the clinch and is looking to separate.
Long misses with a knee strike.
Long wants to push off and get back to the center of the mat but Tuipasa has him pressed against the cage.
Long tries to jump guard but he falls flat on his backside. Tuipasa smiles and moves away.

Long clinches up with Tuipasa and pushes him back against the cage.
Long has been looking to improve his clinch game in recent weeks. Tuipasa seems to have the measure of him in the clinch so far, so let's see if Long can turn it around.

Tuipasa pushes off and circles away, back to the middle of the mat.

Tuipasa takes one on the button.
Long feints a straight left to the body, then turns around with a flashy move and hits Tuipasas jaw with a dramatic spinning back fist!
Long is breathing heavily.
Tuipasa throws a looping left and ducks down for a takedown. He's got his arms around Long's waist but Long gets an underhook and avoids the takedown by throwing Tuipasa off to one side.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Jake Tuipasa. That's going to take a lot out of him.
The fight stays on the outside here - Tuipasa looks like he's thinking about clinching though.
Long shoots in looking for a takedown. Tuipasa tries to sprawl out of it but Long keeps driving through. The fighters are pinned against the cage. Tuipasa manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing.

Long closes the distance and presses his opponent up against the cage.
Long gets double underhooks to prevent a takedown attempt from Tuipasa.

Tuipasa throws a punch but it's blocked by Long.
Tuipasa tries to score a body lock takedown but Long shows good agility there to stay on his feet.
Tuipasa wants a takedown but no success here.
Long looks like he'd prefer to be striking at range right now.
Tuipasa goes for a takedown in the clinch but Long prevents it.
Long tries to circle away but Tuipasa has him pinned against the cage.

Tuipasa wants to control here, rather than go for any submissions from the bottom. At least for now.
Long must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu.

Tuipasa bucks up whilst keeping hold of a body lock, managing to reverse the position. Now he's in top in Long's guard.

Tuipasa wants to control from the top but Long keeps moving.

Long wants to get back to his feet but Tuipasa is in a dominant position and won't allow it.

Tuipasa thinks about going for a leg but decides against it, in order to maintain the position.

Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.
Tuipasa engaging in some classic timewasting tactics.

Long working away from the bottom but not quite defensive enough there because Tuipasa has passed into half guard!

Frank Long showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.

Horrible takedown attempt by Tuipasa or perhaps it was just good defense by Long, which made it look bad.

Tuipasa controls Long momentarily but Long frees himself.

Tuipasa working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Long doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Long manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.

Long wanted to stand there but Tuipasa had control of the position.
Long controls from within his opponent's guard.
Long looking to sit in guard and control but Tuipasa gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top.

Tuipasa postures up in Long's guard and throws a big left but Long blocks it.
Tuipasa slips effortlessly into side control - very nice.
Long parries the strikes from Tuipasa easily there. Tuipasa is wary of posturing up too much because it might enable Long to escape.

Long is trying to improve his position.
Tuipasa controls the position.
Long is not content to let Tuipasa control the position.
Tuipasa throws a strike aimed at the side of Long's head but Long avoids it well.
Jake Tuipasa has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!
Frank Long is fighting for a decision - hopefully he's judged it right and he's actually winning the fight.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Tuipasa in side control, throwing shots but Long defends.

Frank Long comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
I've got Long winning every round here. Surely the decision will go his way and he'll pick up a well deserved decision victory. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
