PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Jon Perry (ranked 6922 p4p, 4955 weight class) and Short Phoenix (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Jon Perry !
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Short Phoenix!
The judges for this bout are Yukihiro Shimada, Tatsuya Matsuyama and Ren Mimura.





The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Perry closes the distance and clinches.
Our sources have told us that Perry has been working on his knees in the buildup to the fight.
Perry with the Thai clinch. He's looking to land a big knee but he's not managed it this time.

Perry throws his legs up looking for a submission but Phoenix uses it to pass to side control.

Perry tries to strike from the bottom but he's left himself exposed and Phoenix has taken his back.

Phoenix is looking for the choke from the back position but Perry is controlling his hands well.
Perry is being controlled on the ground here - he must escape this position otherwise surely the end is near.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Let's hope that Phoenix has the urge to step up the pace any second now because for the last 15 or 20 seconds he's just been holding on tight.

There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.

Phoenix is scooting his butt against the cage and has managed to get back to his feet. Perry presses him back against the cage, presumably looking to take the fight back to the mat.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!

Perry has hold of one of Phoenix's legs. Phoenix is fighting the takedown attempt but Perry gets the trip and lands the takedown into guard.

Phoenix is edging up against the cage. He's using the cage to get back to his feet. Nice work there - the fighters are clinched.
Perry tries to pull guard but Phoenix holds him up against the cage and eventually Perry drops back down to his feet.

Phoenix jumps guard and drags Perry to the mat. He's obviously going to be looking for submissions off his back.
Phoenix takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.

Perry throws a big elbow that misses.
Phoenix not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.

Phoenix looking for submissions from the bottom here. Moving his hips around, possibly looking for an armbar.
Perry with a flurry of punches that miss.
Perry wants to control from the top but Phoenix keeps moving.
Perry has to be careful here, sitting in the guard of a superior BJJ player.

Perry wants to stand and escape but instead Phoenix has hit a sweep and he's now on top in guard.

Perry is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.

Short Phoenix comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
