PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between Jako Day (ranked 2138 p4p, 21389 weight class) and Tyler Sparr (ranked 284 p4p, 724 weight class). Sparr has chosen Bad Moon Rising by Creedence Clearwater Revival as his entrance music. The key to victory for Jako Day has got to be keeping the fight on the feet.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 5 rounds, for the middleweight championship of the world!

And introducing the challenger to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Tyler Sparr!
The judges for this bout are Shigeki Sano, Ren Mimura and Hirohito Nitta.

Day takes a solid shot to the body. That one hurt him but he's trying not to show it.
Day misses with a two punch combination.
Sparr looks like he wants to counter punch here.

We can't be sure of the tactics at this early stage but we have heard that Sparr has been working on his takedowns a lot in the buildup to the fight and we can only assume he's going to look to take this to the mat.
Day with a nice looking leg kick. You could hear that one land in a back row.

Day scores with a reasonable looking shot to the body. Sparr doesn't seem bothered though.

Sparr throws a couple of head shots and lands with the final one - a decent hook, which struck Day on the side of the head.

Day throws a big counter combination but Sparr scrambles out of danger and avoids any damage.

A momentary lapse in concentration from Day enables Sparr to shoot in and score with a neat double leg. Day manages to secure a closed guard as the fighters hit the mat.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Sparr stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Day swivels though and keeps the full guard.
Sparr is in close to Day's body, working some short punches and elbows.
Day can't do much from the bottom at the moment, as Sparr controls the pace.
Sparr wants to pass the guard but Day is keeping the position.
Day knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Sparr on the ground.

Day wants to control here, rather than go for any submissions from the bottom. At least for now.
Sparr is just sitting in guard, looking to avoid any submissions.

We've had a lack of effective grappling in the last minute or so, which could well see a referee standup.
Sparr is looking to work some ground and pound but Day has wrist control.

Day manages to escape and get back to his feet.
Day misses with a low kick.
Day fails to land with the punch combination there - jab, cross, hook, miss, miss, miss.
Day lands a two punch combo.
A big left from Sparr misses.
Nice shot lands for Sparr.

Sparr shoots in for a takedown and gets it. Let's see what he's got on the mat.

This has been an exciting period of action!
Day is looking to get back to his feet but can't, whilst Sparr is controlling him.
Sparr looking to pass the guard.
Day looking to control the pace of the fight rather than finish it.
Sparr stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Day swivels though and keeps the full guard.
Sparr wants to control from the top but Day keeps moving.
Sparr is fighting to break Day's control of his arms but Day is doing a good job of controlling the position at the moment.
Day preventing the ground and pound from doing any damage.
Day trying to keep a closed guard but Sparr is proving a slippery customer.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action.

Day feints a jab promting Sparr to slip. Day then demonstrates his capabilities by jabbing again. Sparr slips again and ducks right into an uppercut.
Day takes a swing at Sparr's ribcage but misses.
Day takes a jab on the nose there. A little bit of blood seems to be coming out. Hopefully that won't affect his breathing.

Sparr's jab looks to have found its range, popping Day under the eye.
Day swings and misses with a hook to the body.
Day defending well as Sparr loads up on a big left hand.
Sparr throws a right and a left that both miss.
Day tries to score with a leg kick but it misses it's target.

Jako Day is winning the standup battle so far.
Sparr lets the fists fly and connects with a left straight followed by a right hook.
Day walks into a stiff left hand from Sparr.

Day is rocked!
Day takes a hook to the side of the head. I wonder if that's got his ears ringing.
Oh Day is still all over the place! His legs are completely gone! Will he be able to recover?!!
Day scores with a straight right hand, right through his opponent's guard.
Sparr dodges the punch combination from Day.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.
A telegraphed takedown attempt from Sparr is defended easily by Day.
Day is looking to counter with a shot to the body.
Sparr grits his teeth and throws a big right-left combo! Day takes both shots clean on the chin and is out cold! Sparr cracks him once more on his way down, as the crowd goes wild! They enjoyed that one!
