PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a featherweight MMA rules bout between Muuka Laine (ranked 796 p4p, 566 weight class) and Oskar Friman (ranked 96 p4p, 65 weight class). Friman is bobbing his head along to his entrance song: Fuck you cheater. Rumors backstage are that the fighters have been paid to keep it standing but we know that would never happen in MMA!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 24 - 15 - 0, fighting out of London, Muuka Laine!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 20 - 14 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, Oskar Friman!
The judges for this bout are Sam Margolis, Andrew Berry and Richard Clark.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

The fight moves into the clinch position.
Friman taking a breather.
Laine gets double underhooks to prevent a takedown attempt from Friman.
Friman avoiding damage as Laine throws knees to the body.

Friman breaks the clinch.
Laine throws a jab but it's blocked by Friman.
Laine dances in quickly and lands a nice inside leg kick on Friman. That did some damage!
Friman swings widly with a right hand
and Laine makes him pay by landing a thudding low kick.
Laine misses with a looping right.
Laine lands a nice looking kick to the body. Friman takes a step back to recover.
Laine circles away from the clinch attempt
and Laine makes the exchange count by landing a cracking kick to the body. Friman really felt that one!
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Friman checks a leg kick.
Friman avoids the body shot from Laine.
A jab from Friman misses.

A solid leg kick lands there for Laine.
Laine misses with a body shot.
Friman with the counter takedown but Laine avoids it easily.

Laine tries to keep at a distance but Friman has taken the fight into the clinch.
Laine goes for a body shot but it's blocked.

Friman wants the takedown. Laine is fighting it off but Friman persists and manages to bring the fight to the ground, ending up in Laine's guard against the cage.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Friman engaging in some classic timewasting tactics.
Friman wants to pass the guard but Laine is keeping the position.
Friman postures up and lands a big shot to Laine's brow.

Laine avoiding any damage from the ground and pound.
Laine keeping moving, preventing Friman from controlling successfully.
Friman working some ground and pound from guard but it's not doing any damage.
Laine utilising some decent striking defenses from the guard, preventing the ground and pound.
The referee is pacing around the two fighters, thinking about a standup.
Friman advances position into side control!
Friman trying to control the action but Laine is working from the bottom.
Friman taking a break here but Laine is having none of it and regains half guard.

Friman is looking to advance position but Laine won't allow it.

Friman is looking to stall here but Laine recovers full guard.
Friman slows down the pace of the fight for a moment. He'll need to remain active if he doesn't want to see the fight stood back up.

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.
Friman missing there with some ground and pound from the guard.
Laine keeping moving, preventing Friman from controlling successfully.

The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up.
Laine looks to land a body kick but Friman moved away.
Laine throws out a leg kick but Friman moves out of range and Laine only half commits.
Laine throws a wild body kick that Friman sees coming a mile off.
Friman misses with a shot to the body
letting Laine counter with a right hand.
Laine connects with a leg kick.
Laine throws a low kick but it's checked well by Friman.
Laine pivots as if he's going to throw a leg kick but stops half way.
Friman with the counter takedown but Laine avoids it easily.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Friman avoids a low kick by using good footwork.
Friman defending well as Laine loads up on a big left hand.
Friman throws a leg kick but Laine sees it coming and checks it nicely.

Friman shoots in and gets a takedown into Laine's guard.
And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close round but I would say that Muuka Laine will probably get the nod.
The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action!

Laine misses with a straight left.
Laine smiles there as he lands a nice right hand right on the button.
Laine lands a pitter patter jab to the forehead of his opponent.
Laine throws a leg kick that misses.
Laine slips a straight right by Friman.
Laine misses with a body kick.
Laine misses with a low kick.
Friman drops down looking to force a counter takedown but Laine defends it well.
Friman fakes a head punch and goes low to the body. Nicely done.
Friman moves into range and connects with a jab.

Friman takes a step towards his opponent and connects with a left hand, before circling away.
Laine tries to score with a leg kick but it misses it's target.
Laine keeping a good distance there, avoiding the body shot.

and Friman counters with a nice double leg into guard.
This has been an exciting period of action!
Friman with a couple of shots to the head there. Not particularly brutal.

Friman trying to control but Laine is working from the bottom.
Friman throwing elbows and punches but not connecting, as Laine works some decent striking defense from the bottom.
Laine wants to stand and escape but Friman is having none of it.
Oskar Friman has got the better of the ground game so far.
Friman content to stall in guard here.
Friman forces his way into half guard.
Laine is looking for a sweep. Friman is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position.

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.
Laine blocking the ground and pound attempt from Friman.
My spies in The Lab inform me that Friman has been getting involved in the gym's BJJ sparring sessions. Let's see whether that pays dividends!
Friman wants to free his trapped foot but Laine is holding on for dear life with his legs.
Friman trying to control the pace.
Friman not throwing his punches with enough precision this time.
Friman working some ground and pound from close in. He's looking to maintain this position and strike for a while by the looks of things... although he'll probably advance to full mount in a minute now I've said that.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Friman seems very keen to just sit and control from half guard but Laine does not like that idea so much and is remaining active off his back.
Friman thumps the canvas. Not on purpose obviously - he just missed Laine's head.

The referee has decided to stand the fighters back up, so we'll restart on the feet.
Laine throws the left hand but Friman avoids the punch easily.

Friman tries to clinch but Laine moves out of range.
Muuka Laine seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Laine slaps away a takedown attempt from Friman, before circling back to the center of the mat.
Laine quickly followed up with a counter body kick but doesn't connect.
Friman misses with a straight right.
Friman tries to clinch up against the cage, rushing in to close the distance. Laine manages to break the clinch and circles back to the middle of the mat.
Friman shoots in looking for a double leg takedown. Laine defends it nicely.
Laine scores with a hook to the body. Friman takes a step back and tries to catch his breath.
Friman shoots in for a takedown. "I don't think so" says Laine as he avoids it easily.
Muuka Laine has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Oskar Friman.
Friman tries to clinch there but Laine circles away.
Friman missing with a left hand there. Laine was out of range so wasted energy throwing that one.

Friman takes a kick to the side of the head.
A lazy left from Laine finds it's target.
Sloppy strikes from Laine. Those never looked like landing.
Laine lands a vicious shot with the stealth of a sniper and the strength of a viper. Are vipers that strong? I can think of lots of things that are stronger than a viper - not many rhyme with sniper though.
Friman displays some good footwork, moving neatly out of range as Laine throws out the jab.
Friman changes levels for a counter takedown but doesn't follow through with his attempt.
Laine scores with a punch to the gut of his opponent.
Muuka Laine is winning the standup battle so far.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.
Friman shoots for a takedown but Laine saw that one coming a mile off and avoided it easily.
Muuka Laine is looking to keep the fight on the feet at all costs.
Friman blocks a head kick by Laine.
Laine lands with a good body shot.
Laine slips under a jab from Friman.
Laine tried to counter with a leg kick but Friman avoided it.
Friman swings and misses with a hook to the body.

Laine jabs Friman right on the nose. Friman blinks but takes it well.
And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.

The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action! This is the final round!

A combination from Laine does no damage.
Laine avoids a lazy jab quite easily.
Laine catches Friman with a nice straight right. He seems pissed - ooooh, it's on now! On like donkey kong!
Laine cracks Friman with an open hand slap.
Laine throws a body kick, spinning off balance

and Friman counters with a driving takedown into guard. Nice work there by Friman.
Friman is taking a break and basically stalling. The referee will not allow him to do that for long.
Friman wants to pass the guard but Laine is keeping the position.
Friman throws a big elbow that misses.

Friman is frustrating his opponent with some stalling tactics from top position.

Friman in full guard, throwing the ground and pound. No damage this time.
Friman is intent on slowing down the pace of the fight, simply looking to control.
It looks like the ref is thinking about a standup.
Friman wants to control from the top but Laine keeps moving.

Laine throws a front kick that sends Friman stumbling back into the cage.

Laine tries to keep at a distance but Friman has taken the fight into the clinch.
Friman is trying to work for a single leg takedown but Laine pulls him back up using the underhooks.

Laine's corner calls for him to break the clinch, which he does.
Friman jabbing away but nothing is landing.

Laine pulls out of a head kick attempt.
Laine throws a nice outside leg kick.

and Friman counters with a shoot takedown into half guard.

Laine manages to escape and get back to his feet!
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!
Friman lunges in with an uppercut that skims his opponent's chin.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Laine throws a hard body shot but it just misses.

Friman drives through with a takedown into guard.

Laine has managed to wall walk up one of the corner posts to get back to his feet. Friman is pushing him up against the cage, looking to control the position.
Laine putting his Muay Thai to good use. He has Friman in a tight clinch and is doing some damage with knees to the body.
Laine lands with a short head shot on the inside.

Laine breaks the clinch and we're back to striking at distance.
Laine is really dominating this fight. Is there anything that Friman can do to turn this around?
Some wild striking there from Laine.
Laine fakes high and swings low for a body shot but Friman manages to avoid it.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!
Laine avoids a lazy jab quite easily.
Laine slips a straight right by Friman.
Laine uses some good footwork to avoid the body shot by Friman.
The fighters circling - Friman throws out the jab but it was never going to land.

Friman throws a monster uppercut resembling something out of street fighter but it doesn't land.
Laine throws a jab to the body, straight down the pipe. Boom. That sent Friman stumbling backwards but he manages to regain his composure quickly.
Laine missing with a left hand there. Friman was out of range so wasted energy throwing that one.
Oskar Friman has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!
Laine lands a nice looking body kick.
Friman checks a leg kick.
Friman chopped to the floor by a nice leg kick but he springs right back up before Laine can pounce on him.
Laine takes a jab right on the nose. That must have hurt but he shrugs his shoulders and looks to return the favor.
Laine misses with an uppercut. Friman saw that one coming.
Friman throws a shot to the body.
Laine with a nice looking leg kick. You could hear that one land in a back row.
Laine tries to score with an inside leg kick but telegraphs it and Friman is able to avoid easily.
Friman drops down looking to force a counter takedown but Laine defends it well.
Friman tests Laine's chin there with a solid looking shot.
Horrible takedown attempt by Friman or perhaps it was just good defense by Laine, which made it look bad.

And that's the end of the fight!
Muuka Laine showed his dominance in that final round.
Well I reckon that's a shut out for Laine, winning every round. Will the judges agree? They are the ones who matter, even if they are often depressingly incompetent. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.

Muuka Laine decided to hype himself up post fight. It was going well but he went on about it a bit too long and the crowd turned on him a little.
Oskar Friman was interviewed post fight and said 'Seriously? Why any org even allows to cheat with weight like that?'.
