PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Jay Hobbs (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Andrew Roberts (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Andrew Roberts is the more experienced fighter, so let's see if that makes a difference tonight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 2 - 1 - 0, fighting out of New York, Jay Hobbs!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 4 - 8 - 0, fighting out of New York, Andrew Roberts!
The judges for this bout are Columbo Gatti, Franklyn Lucas and Dean Styles.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Hobbs swats away the attempt to clinch by Roberts.
Hobbs shoots for a double leg takedown but Roberts sprawls well. He's pushed Hobbs's face into the mat and manages to get back to his feet relatively easily.
Roberts uses some good footwork to avoid the body shot by Hobbs.
Roberts stalks Hobbs and leaps in with a furious combination of punches. Uppercuts and crosses smash into Hobbs's face. Hobbs staggers backwards, shaken.


It looks like Jay Hobbs has been cut.
Hobbs shoots in for a takedown but Roberts shows good takedown defense.
Roberts is looking to clinch but Hobbs is avoiding it.
Roberts tries to clinch but is not successful on this occasion.
Hobbs looks frustrated there after his takedown attempt is stuffed easily.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Jay Hobbs. That's going to take a lot out of him.

and Roberts counters by moving into the clinch.
Roberts tries to land a knee to the head but Hobbs blocks with his arms.

Roberts escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.

Hobbs gets the takedown into side control.
Hobbs working the ground and pound but Roberts is defending the strikes.
Roberts is looking for a sweep.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Roberts sneaks back into half guard.

Roberts pushes Hobbs off looking to stand but Hobbs dives back in and keeps control.
Hobbs seems content to maintain position for now, rather than mounting any offense.
Roberts tries to get to full guard but Hobbs has control of the leg.

Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.
Hobbs not throwing his punches with enough precision this time.
Roberts is looking to escape.
Hobbs is looking to advance position but Roberts won't allow it.
Roberts is trying to get back to full guard.
Roberts is persisting with the attempt to improve his position.

Neither fighter is doing enough for the referee's liking and he's decided to stand them back up.

Roberts gets a clinch.

Roberts comes over the top with an elbow. That landed flush.
Hobbs tries to pull guard but Roberts won't allow it.
Roberts lands a knee to the head there! That was nasty!

Hobbs on the defensive, avoiding the knees to the body.
Hobbs blocks an elbow strike from Roberts.
Hobbs jumps guard but his hands slip and he falls flat on his back. Well, he's made himself look a right mug there, as Roberts walks away with a smile on his face. Hobbs gets slowly back to his feet and shakes his head.
Hobbs tries for a takedown but Roberts circles away easily
and Roberts connects with a straight left hand counter down the middle.

Hobbs closes the distance, clinches up and gets a nice trip takedown into side control. Very smooth.
Roberts looks gassed!
Roberts is not content to let Hobbs control the position.
Roberts wants to control but Hobbs postures up.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Roberts regains half guard, as Hobbs was trying to land strikes.
Hobbs is just content to waste time from the top position. Roberts takes advantage of the situation and regains full guard.
Hobbs stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Roberts swivels though and keeps the full guard.
Roberts is pulling down on Hobbs's head to control his posture.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Hobbs sitting in guard here, content to control.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action.


Hobbs tries to close the distance and clinch up against the cage but Roberts paws at him with a jab and circles away.

Hobbs tries to pull guard but Roberts holds him up against the cage and eventually Hobbs drops back down to his feet.

Roberts clobbers Hobbs with an overhand right that has the crowd gasping. That made a horrendous noise.

Hobbs shoots in for a takedown and gets it. Oh and he's advanced to full mount straight away.
Roberts is looking to improve his position but Hobbs isn't that keen on the idea.
Roberts tries to lock up and control but Hobbs gives him a forearm to the face and pushes him away.
Roberts is in a horrible position here. Hobbs smacks him with another shot as he tries to escape the position.
Hobbs in mount throwing good strikes here, bouncing his opponent's head off the canvas.

Roberts is looking to improve his position but Hobbs isn't that keen on the idea.
Hobbs trying to control but he's not successful this time.
Roberts is writhing around trying to get back to his feet.
Roberts really trying hard to get back to half guard here.
Roberts is breathing heavily.

There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.
Hobbs connects with a couple of good shots from mount.
Hobbs wants to control the pace but Roberts is squirming around nicely.
Hobbs sitting in mount, just looking to control for the moment.
Hobbs lands with some vicious ground and pound - can Roberts hang on?
Hobbs lands a shot to the body, followed up by a shot to the exposed head of his trapped opponent.

Hobbs seems to have a rather negative gameplan on the ground. He seems keen to just score the takedown and hold down Roberts for as long as he can get away with.

Hobbs has his opponent pinned against the cage, landing some nasty ground and pound that is really making a bit of a mess out of Roberts's face.

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.
Hobbs can't quite control the action as he would like just now, as Roberts is looking to escape.
Roberts is in a horrible position here. Hobbs smacks him with another shot as he tries to escape the position.
Roberts is trying to reverse the position but instead Hobbs has taken his back - oops!
A lull in the action here.
Hobbs looking to soften up his opponent with punches.
Roberts is trying to get back to his feet but Hobbs has full control of the position and if anything, Roberts has just worked his way into a worse spot.

Roberts is rocked!
Roberts has momentary wrist control but Hobbs slips an elbow through the middle.
Roberts is still in real trouble! Can Hobbs finish him?
Hobbs is sitting in guard, working some ground and pound.

Hobbs postures up as if he's going to throw some strikes but drops back for an ankle! Roberts is in big trouble! He looks ready to tap! But no, he's escaped and dives on top of Hobbs, into his guard.

Hobbs looking for submissions off his back, moving his hips, looking for an opening.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.
Roberts wants to control from the top but Hobbs keeps moving.
Hobbs manages to sweep nicely, so he's now on top. Roberts manages to get himself to full guard.
Roberts seems to have recovered his senses.

Roberts keeping moving, preventing Hobbs from controlling successfully.
Roberts wants to get back to his feet but Hobbs is in a dominant position and won't allow it.
Hobbs wants to stand and escape but instead Roberts has hit a sweep and he's now on top in guard.

Roberts stands up and waves to Hobbs to follow him.

Roberts breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat.
Hobbs gets his takedown attempt stuffed easily
and Roberts counters with a crisp hook to the side of the head.

Roberts closes the distance and clinches.
Roberts misses the knee to the body. Nice hip positioning from Hobbs.
Roberts lands an elbow that stopped Hobbs in his tracks for a moment.

Roberts escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.
Hobbs circles away from the clinch attempt.

Roberts misses with a wild combination.
Hobbs tries to clinch but Roberts moves out of range.
Hobbs wants to clinch.
Hobbs shoots in for a takedown but doesn't get it.

Hobbs shoots in for a takedown - he's clinched up with Roberts but Roberts pushes him off and we're back to square one.

and Roberts counters by moving into the clinch.

Roberts pushes off and circles away, back to the middle of the mat.
Hobbs throws a sloppy head kick

and Roberts holds on and brings the fighters into a clinch.
Roberts unloads a knee to the mid-section. Hobbs lets out a prehistoric sounding urrrrgh.
Nice elbow from Roberts.
Hobbs wants to push off and get back to the center of the mat but Roberts has him pressed against the cage.
Hobbs jumps guard but his hands slip and he falls flat on his back. Well, he's made himself look a right mug there, as Roberts walks away with a smile on his face. Hobbs gets slowly back to his feet and shakes his head.

Hobbs closes the distance, clinches up and gets a nice trip takedown into side control. Very smooth.

Hobbs tries for an arm triangle. That looks pretty tight to me. Is this one over!?! Possibly, maybe, no Hobbs has let go of the choke. Obviously it wasn't as tight as we thought!
Roberts manages to get one leg in to regain half guard.

And that's the end of the fight!
Andrew Roberts comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
I think Roberts has won this one but let's see whether the judges agree with me. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
