The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Griffin shoots in for a takedown. "Ole!" shouts sheppard as he jumps to the side.

Horrible takedown by Griffin or perhaps it was just good defense by sheppard which made him look bad.

sheppard escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Griffin gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance.

sheppard is trying to work a guillotine from the top, or something like that? Don't know how he thinks he's going to get a finish from there.
The fighters are starting to get a bit slippery now, which will make submissions a bit more difficult.
Griffin is trying to control the position but sheppard postures up.

Griffin has his foot on sheppard's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. sheppard works his way back into a safe position though.

Griffin is holding a leg here, probably looking for an ankle lock - he drops back and goes for it! sheppard is in trouble! Is it all over??? No! sheppard has escaped and now he's on top!

This has been an exciting period of action!

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Griffin is in a good position here but he's just trying to control... And he's not even managing to do that successfully.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
