PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a featherweight MMA rules bout between John Force (ranked 4018 p4p, 5849 weight class) and Rodrigo Alva (ranked 337 p4p, 419 weight class). Rodrigo Alva is the more experienced fighter, so let's see if that makes a difference tonight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of New York, John Force!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Rodrigo Alva!
The judges for this bout are Timothy Bukovac, Frank Antenori and Jack Bonds.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Force closes the distance and clinches up with Alva, looking for a takedown. Force pushes Alva against the cage but Alva circles to the side and manages to break the clinch.
Alva feints a counter leg kick.

Force looking to shoot here. He's gone for it and he's landed a takedown into side control! Oh, that's bad for Alva!
Alva is letting Force control him for a moment.
Force cracks Alva with a big elbow.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Force is moving around in side control but his primary objective seems to be to maintain the position.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Force lands a knee to the body and follows it up with some ground and pound to the head. That will wear Alva down.
A lull in the action here.
Force's ground tactics aren't going to win him many fans. Let's hope he's got fireworks for us if he gets back to his feet because he's not doing much on the ground.

There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.
If this pace continues, the referee will definitely step in and force a standup.
Force seems to have a rather negative gameplan on the ground. He seems keen to just score the takedown and hold down Alva for as long as he can get away with.

The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up.
Force has a takedown stuffed.
It seemed like Alva was going to counter with the hook but didn't fully commit to it.

Force shoots in but doesn't get the takedown
and Alva counters with a stiff right hand.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for John Force. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Force shoots for a double leg takedown but Alva sprawls well. He's pushed Force's face into the mat and manages to get back to his feet relatively easily.
Force fails with a rather predictable takedown attempt.
Alva throws out a counter right but Force avoids it with no problem.

and Force counters with a nice shoot takedown that brings the fighters to the ground.
Force sneaks a leg through and gets to half guard. That was like a knife through butter how easily he passed Alva's guard.

Force lands with an elbow from half guard - that looked like it hurt.

Force working over Alva with some ground and pound. Alva looks like he wants out of this position, which is understandable.

Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
Force lands with a punch from half guard.
Force sitting and controlling from the half guard.
And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.

The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare each other down, ready to get back to the action.

Force shoots for a takedown but Alva saw that one coming a mile off and avoided it easily.
John Force is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.

Force shoots in from a long way out. He's driving through with the takedown attempt and he eventually gets it, landing in Alva's guard.
Force is intent on slowing down the pace of the fight, simply looking to control.

Force cracks Alva with a solid left hand.
Force's corner is telling him to maintain position.

Force with a couple of shots to the head there. Not particularly brutal.
Alva is trying to control the position but Force postures up.
Force has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.

John Force overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.
Alva is breathing heavily.

If this pace continues, the referee will definitely step in and force a standup.

Force is frustrating his opponent with some stalling tactics from top position.
Force postures up and lands some nice ground and pound.

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.
Force slows down the pace of the fight for a moment. He'll need to remain active if he doesn't want to see the fight stood back up.

The referee has stepped in and called for a break in the action. We'll restart on the feet.
Force fails with the takedown
and Alva counters with a crisp hook to the side of the head.
Alva looks more muscular than last time we saw him. He must have been on the weights.
Force is really dominating this fight. Is there anything that Alva can do to turn this around?
Force shoots in for a takedown but Alva shows good takedown defense.
Alva looked like he wanted to counter with a punch but didn't throw it.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for John Force. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Force shoots for a double leg takedown but Alva sprawls well. He's pushed Force's face into the mat and manages to get back to his feet relatively easily.
Force dives in and grabs Alva's left leg, looking for a takedown. Alva pushes down on Force's head and hops out.
Nice takedown defense from Alva. No joy for Force on that attempt.

Force shoots in looking for a takedown. Alva tries to sprawl out of it but Force keeps driving through. The fighters are pinned against the cage. Alva manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing.

Force closes the distance and gets a trip takedown into side control. Alva quickly recovers to half guard.
Force is keeping good posture, landing some ground and pound.
Force performing his best blanket impression for a moment.

Force looks to score some points with some ground and pound.
Force controlling the action here.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.

John Force dominated that second round.
That's time! Back to the action! This is the final round!

Force throws a looping left and ducks down for a takedown. He's got his arms around Alva's waist but Alva gets an underhook and avoids the takedown by throwing Force off to one side.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Force lands a couple of decent looking shots.
Force controls from within his opponent's guard.

A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd.
Force shoots in for a takedown - he's clinched up with Alva but Alva pushes him off and we're back to square one.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for John Force. That's going to take a lot out of him.

Force shoots in for a takedown! He's got it and he's managed to land in side control! That's better than Force was expecting from the takedown attempt, I'm sure!
Alva tries to wriggle free to get back to his feet but he's given up his back! Oops.
Force really has the hooks in deep now - there seems like no escape for Alva.
Force continues to stall.

Force has controlled the position for a good 20 seconds, which will no doubt be starting to frustrate his opponent.

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.
Alva is taking damage to the body and head.
Force is controlling his opponent, waiting for an opportunity to finish.
Force lands a shot to the body.
Alva is covering up but some of the strikes from Force are getting through and doing damage.
Alva is being controlled on the ground here - he must escape this position otherwise surely the end is near.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!

And that's the end of the fight!
John Force showed his dominance in that final round.
Well I reckon that's a shut out for Force, winning every round. Will the judges agree? They are the ones who matter, even if they are often depressingly incompetent. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
