PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Manny Mercado (ranked 5035 p4p, 5918 weight class) and Nelson Maseko (ranked 486 p4p, 561 weight class). Fingers crossed for an exciting fight - I'm sure both fighters are looking for a nice under the table bonus!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.

The judges for this bout are Alexandre Firmino, Edson Gomes and Leandro Rodrigues.

The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Maseko tries to clinch but Mercado is having none of it.
A looping hook to the body misses from Mercado. Maseko does a little dance to reset his feet.
A nice inside leg kick there by Mercado. That's going to slow Maseko down.
Mercado scores with a jab to the body.
Maseko is a painfully thin specimen of a man. You do wonder whether a good body kick would snap him clean in two.
Maseko avoids the head kick by Mercado.

Maseko shoots in for a takedown. "Ole!" shouts Mercado as he jumps to the side.
Maseko takes a punch right to his stomach. That took the wind out of him momentarily.

Maseko has taken the fight to the clinch.
Maseko is looking to score with knees to the body. Maybe he'll change it up and go body then head. Mercado is defending well for now.

Mercado lands with a thumping leg kick.
Maseko looks frustrated there after his takedown attempt is stuffed easily.
A nice leg kick lands there from Mercado.
Mercado tries a head kick but it misses.
Maseko has his head snapped back a nice jab. A little nod from Maseko there as he acknowledges the shot.

Maseko drops down looking to force a counter takedown but Mercado defends it well.

Mercado thuds a mid kick into his opponent's body. That will wear on Maseko if he has to take too many more of those.

Maseko feints and then dives in with a takedown. That was a long way out but the feint bought him enough time to close the distance and complete the takedown. Now we'll play guard for a bit and see who can get the better of that position.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!
A real slowdown in the pace of the fight for a moment, as Mercado holds on and takes a little breather.
Mercado wants to sweep but no luck.

Mercado has a closed guard, preventing anything of note from happening. Perhaps he's looking to stall.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Maseko gets to his feet and steps away from his opponent.
Maseko takes one on the chin but seems OK.
Mercado has his hands up protecting his head but a hook from Maseko finds it's way round the side to connect with Mercado's head.

Mercado tries to land with a swinging hook to the body but Maseko was well out of range. Poor timing from Mercado.
A nice side step and Maseko releases a counter shot to the body, but it doesn't find it's home.
Mercado turns his hip over beautifully as he lands a nice leg kick.
Mercado bobs and weaves and then throws a good body kick.
Mercado connects with a high kick.
Manny Mercado seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Maseko tries to score a power double leg takedown but Mercado sees that one coming and sprawls well. That will dishearten Maseko somewhat.

Mercado rushes forward with a series of wild hooks but Maseko moves out of range and avoids them all easily.

Mercado scores with a head kick. Maseko tried to block it but didn't get his arm up in time.

Mercado connects with a leg kick. He turned his hip over nicely there.
Maseko doesn't manage to clinch there - Mercado circles away.

Mercado digs a good body shot into Maseko's ribs.

Maseko tries to clinch but Mercado moves out of range.
Mercado throws a hard body shot but it just misses.
Mercado slaps away a takedown attempt from Maseko, before circling back to the center of the mat.
Maseko sees a low kick coming and goes to check it, but it's actually a body kick and it thuds into his unprotected ribs.
And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.

Maseko fails with a rather predictable takedown attempt.
A quick step to the side and Mercado tries to counter with a shot to the body but it doesn't connect.
Maseko slips a jab and a cross from Mercado.
Maseko closes the distance and takes a jab right on the nose as he does so.
Mercado just misses with a punch to the body.
That kick from Mercado tenderised Maseko's leg. Maseko is trying to keep his angry face on.

Mercado connects with a body shot that sends Maseko's belly button to the back.
No luck with that takedown attempt from Maseko.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Maseko is breathing heavily.

Mercado drops Maseko with a hook right on the temple. He thinks about going to the ground but Maseko looks back up at him and smiles so Mercado waves him back to his feet - he obviously thinks he can knock him out after that shot landed.

Maseko wants to stay close but Mercado steps back to make room for something. Maseko seems frozen to the spot and bam! huge swing of the leg from Mercado and Maseko drops like he has been shot! A huge head kick and it's all over!

Manny Mercado really struggled to get his t-shirt on before his hand was raised. Making sure that PWNAGE logo gets some air time is pretty tricky when you're all sweaty.
