PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Hector Hernandez (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Elvin Ruez (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). The crowd seem to be enjoying Ruez's choice of entrance music: Face Breaker - Poison Pen. I don't know about you partner, but I'm pumped for this one!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Hector Hernandez!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Elvin Ruez!

The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Hernandez closes the distance and clinches up with Ruez, looking for a takedown. Hernandez pushes Ruez against the cage but Ruez circles to the side and manages to break the clinch.
Hernandez will have to do better than that with his takedown attempts.
Hector Hernandez seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Hernandez shoots in with a takedown attempt and he has Ruez pinned against the cage. Ruez gets the underhooks and manages to circle away.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Hector Hernandez. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Hernandez misses with a wild combination.
Hernandez tries to clinch but Ruez moves out of range.
Horrible takedown by Hernandez or perhaps it was just good defense by Ruez which made him look bad.
Ruez just misses with a punch to the body.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Hernandez misses with a jab and misses with a cross straight after too.

Ruez stands, ready to strike. The ref makes him back up and allows Hernandez to get to his feet.

The fighters circling - Ruez throws out the jab but it was never going to land.
Hernandez doesn't succeed with the takedown

and Ruez counters by moving into the clinch. Good anticipation by Ruez.

The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.
Hernandez wants a takedown but no success here.
Ruez scores with a shot to the side of Hernandez's head.

Ruez has hold of one of Hernandez's legs. Hernandez is fighting the takedown attempt but Ruez gets the trip and lands the takedown into guard.
Ruez really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Hernandez. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.
Hernandez is breathing heavily.
Ruez advances to half guard.
Ruez looks over to his corner - he wants some instructions but his corner are not responding.
The two fighters exchange a few words. I couldn't hear what they were saying but maybe it's more fun if you make it up yourself. Ruez connects with a nice short shot to Hernandez's temple.
Ruez wants to get back to his feet.

That's three minutes gone in the round.

Ruez is looking to pass the guard... He's managed it - he's now in full mount!

A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.

The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily.
Let's hope that Ruez has the urge to step up the pace any second now because for the last 15 or 20 seconds he's just been holding on tight.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Well, the break between rounds is over. Let's get back to the scrappin!



Ruez fakes with an overhand right and moves in to clinch with Hernandez, pushing him back against the cage.

Ruez works for the underhooks and manages to get a trip takedown into guard.
Hernandez wants to stand but Ruez is controlling the position.

Ruez stands up from Hernandez's guard - Ruez perhaps looking for a knockout.
Ruez throws a jab, cross combination which is slipped
and Hernandez counters with a lovely straight right hand!
Hernandez looks to clinch

and Ruez counters with a takedown into full mount! That could mean trouble for Hernandez!
Hernandez tries to reverse the position but Ruez maintains control.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

Ruez in mount throwing good strikes here, bouncing his opponent's head off the canvas.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.
BOOM! Ruez connects with a massive shot to the dome!
We could do with one of the fighters taking the initiative a bit more on the ground - they're both waiting to capitalize on a mistake.
Ruez is landing with some decent strikes but Hernandez is trying to advance his position so the referee is letting the fight continue.

Hernandez is writhing around trying to get back to his feet.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.

Ruez's corner are shouting for him to control the position and he seems happy to oblige.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Elvin Ruez showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business. So, we enter the final round. Let's see if either fighter can bring us a finish, or whether we're going to the judges scorecards.


Hernandez has his takedown stuffed

and Ruez counters with a takedown into full mount! That could mean trouble for Hernandez!
Ruez lands with some vicious ground and pound - can Hernandez hang on?
Ruez controlling the pace for now.

Despite being in the dominant position, Elvin Ruez just isn't active enough and the referee decides to stand the fighters back up.

Hernandez is looking for a takedown up against the cage. Ruez gets underhooks though and prevents the takedown attempt.

Ruez turns his hips and lands a very nice judo throw into side control!
Hernandez on the wrong end of some ground and pound.
Hernandez takes a big shot right to the temple there but he's taken it well.

Ruez decides to stand back up.
Hernandez misses with a takedown attempt
enabling Ruez to counter with a crisp jab.

Ruez shoots in and bounces Hernandez off the cage to secure the takedown into guard.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.
Ruez stays in close to Hernandez's body and controls the position.
Ruez has been the more effective fighter overall so far.

Ruez postures up and lands some nice ground and pound.

Ruez stands up and waves to Hernandez to follow him.
Ruez connects with a crisp jab.


Hernandez is rocked!

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Ruez swings wildly with a right hand that was never going to find it's target.
Hernandez misses with a takedown attempt

and Ruez holds on and brings the fighters into a clinch.
The fighters are pressed against the cage, as the pace of the fight slows.

Ruez's corner calls for him to break the clinch, which he does.
Ruez circles and sees the opportunity to plant his feet and throw a really nice straight left hand that drops Hernandez to the canvas! Hernandez doesn't know where he is but he's trying to survive - Ruez keeps piling on the pressure and forces the referee to step in! This one is aaaaaall over!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 3:36 of round 3, we have a winner by way of TKO (Strikes). Elvin Ruez!
