The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Good standup being displayed there by Smith as he connects with a hook.
Sydal just misses with a punch to the body.
Sydal takes a big uppercut there. He seems a bit wobbly but no, he's OK.
Smith's jab looks to have found its range, popping Sydal under the eye.
Smith bobs and weaves and unloads with a good uppercut.
Smith scores with the left hand. Sydal knows he should have avoided that one.

Sydal looking to score a takedown here. Smith is defending well but Sydal drives through and ends up in Smith's guard.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!

Sydal wants to stand up but Smith has a hold of him and won't allow it.
Smith wants to improve his position but Sydal is controlling well.

Smith is trying to maintain the position but Sydal is very close to passing his half guard.
Sydal is nestled in close to Smith, controlling him well. He's worked in a nice elbow to the side of the head as well, for good measure.

Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.
