PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between Steve Bates (ranked 5238 p4p, 4478 weight class) and Sir Turner (ranked 653 p4p, 599 weight class). These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 2 - 0, fighting out of The Island, Steve Bates!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 2 - 4 - 0, fighting out of The Island, Sir Turner!
The judges for this bout are Bart Greer, Dirk Anderson and David Hoff.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Bates fails with the takedown

and Turner decides to take the opportunity to score a takedown. He's landed in Bates's guard.
Bates trying to keep a closed guard but Turner is proving a slippery customer.

Bates looking for submissions from the bottom here. Moving his hips around, possibly looking for an armbar.
Turner lands a couple of digs.

It looks like Steve Bates has been cut.

Turner got a little sloppy there for a moment and Bates has worked his way into a loose triangle - can he finish it?! No, Turner has managed to get both his arms back between Bates's legs - danger averted.

Turner trying to land body shots but he keeps hitting the mat.
Turner lands a couple of decent looking shots.

Bates throwing his legs up looking for a triangle.

Turner cracks Bates with a solid left hand.
Bates lands a beautiful sweep and he's now moved into his opponent's guard.

Bates wants to pass the guard but Turner is keeping the position.
We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if Turner can do anything to dispel that myth.
A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Bates accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand.
Bates scoring with punches to the head and body.

Bates postures up as if he's going to throw some strikes but drops back for an ankle! Turner is in big trouble! He looks ready to tap! But no, he's escaped and dives on top of Bates, into his guard.

Turner must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu.
Turner wants to pass the guard but Bates is keeping the position.
Turner loading up with the ground and pound but he's missing more than he's landing in this flurry.

Turner working in close now, lands a nice elbow to the side of Bates's head.
Turner content to strike from guard, landing some decent shots.

Bates had isolated an arm as going for a kimura. Turner defends it easily.
Turner lands a nice shot whilst sitting in his opponent's guard.

Steve Bates's cut is bleeding quite badly. He's got to try and protect it.

Bates is breathing heavily.

Bates is working actively off his back, looking to secure an arm or perhaps work for a triangle.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!
Turner connects with a couple of short punches.
Bates has momentary wrist control but Turner slips an elbow through the middle.

Turner in full guard, throwing the ground and pound. No damage this time.
Turner throws a big right hand that misses.
Turner postures up and scores with a shot to the body and a follow up elbow to the head.

Bates is rocked!

Jeez, Steve Bates's cut is really nasty now. The referee must be thinking about getting that checked.

The referee calls the doctor in to look at Steve Bates's cut. Oh no, the doctor has called an end to the bout!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 3:34 of round 1, we have a winner by way of TKO (Cut). Sir Turner!
An out of breath Sir Turner thanked his loyal fans in his post fight interview, giving them credit for his success over the course of his career.
