PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between Greg Cox (ranked 4575 p4p, 3484 weight class) and Dean Sam (ranked 0 p4p, 480 weight class). Rumors backstage are that the fighters have been paid to keep it standing but we know that would never happen in MMA!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.

And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Dean Sam!
The judges for this bout are Ian Loll, Trevor Gratis and William Peck.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Sam shoots in for a takedown but Cox shows good takedown defense.

Sam moves into the clinch.
Sam is pressed up against the cage. Cox has hold of a leg and is looking to drag Sam down to the mat. Sam avoids the attempt though and has circled away. We're back to striking at a distance.
Sam will need to tighten up his combinations if he doesn't want to gas himself out, swinging at thin air.
Sam has been spending a lot of time sparring his boxing in the run up to the fight, trying to sharpen up those hands and look for a knockout.
Sam lands a jab-cross combination.
A head kick misses from Sam.
Cox half commits to a counter takedown before pushing away, out of range.

Sam moves into range and clinches up with Cox.
Sam tries to land a shot to the body but it's blocked.
Sam tries to break the clinch but Cox is controlling the position.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Sam has dropped down and is looking to force the takedown but it's defended by Cox after a bit of a struggle.
Sam gets through Cox's defenses to land a nice punch to the side of the head.
Sam digs a right hand underneath Cox's ribcage. Cox let out a lung full of air as it connected.
A head punch on the inside from Cox fails to land.

Cox gets the body lock takedown. After a quick scramble, Sam regains guard.

Sam has scooted to the edge of the canvas and used the cage to get back to his feet. Cox has stuck on his opponent and is forcing him back against the cage.

Sam is trying to break the clinch but Cox is controlling him.

Cox prevents Sam from breaking the clinch.
Sam tries to break free but Cox pushes him back against the cage.
Cox has Sam pressed against the cage, preventing Sam from circling away and getting back to striking at range.
Cox is trying to maintain a safe position but Sam gets an underhook and turns Cox into the cage.
Sam wants to strike at distance but he can't break free of the clinch.

Cox doesn't land with the attempted body shot.
Cox keeps control of Sam as he tries to wriggle out of the double underhooks.
Sam tries to circle away but Cox has him pinned against the cage.

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.
A right handed body shot lands from Sam.

Sam's corner calls for him to break the clinch, which he does.
Sam lands a leg kick. The shin dug right into the meat of the thigh.
Sam scores with a nice looking left hook and follows it up with an uppercut!

Cox drives through and clinches with Sam against the cage.
Cox has hold of a leg and is looking for a trip takedown. Sam avoids it nicely though and we remain in the clinch.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Greg Cox. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Sam is trying to slow down the pace in the clinch, to catch his breath.
A quick uppercut on the inside from Sam.
Sam wants to break free but Cox has control.
Sam digs a right hand underneath Cox's ribcage. Cox let out a lung full of air as it connected.
Sam has had enough of the clinch but Cox keeps him there for the moment.
Cox has a body lock and is looking for a takedown. Sam is bouncing around trying to prevent the takedown and somehow he has indeed managed to stay on his feet.

Sam blocks a knee to the body. He'll have a nicely bruised forearm in the morning.

Sam pushes Cox back against the cage and lands a hook to the side of the head.

Sam wants to push off and get back to the center of the mat but Cox has him pressed against the cage.

Sam manages to pull guard. Let's see whether he can land a sub off his back.
Cox is frustrating his opponent with some stalling tactics from top position.

Cox is posturing up here but Sam has hold of an arm and he's gone for an armbar! Cox tries to roll out but it's too tight and Cox has to tap! Slick submission there by Sam!
