PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Maximillion Souffrant (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Marshall Mason (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Souffrant's entrance music is Nitro - Freight Train Solo. A fine choice. Maximillion Souffrant had real problems making weight for this fight. After initially coming in at 171.5lbs, he had two hours to make the official fight weight. He made it but it will have taken a lot out of him to cut those extra few pounds. Both these guys have really solid chins. Will we see a standup war or will they both decide that a knockout is unlikely and try to win the fight elsewhere?

The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Mason shoots in and gets a takedown into half guard. Mason showed some decent athleticism there.
Mason prevents Souffrant from improving his position.

Souffrant is defending against the submission attempts here by Mason.
Mason takes advantage of the dominant position to land a couple of big hammer fists.

Mason stands up from half guard... He's had enough of that ground malarky for the time being.
Souffrant fails in his attempt to clinch.
Mason throws a combination but it was largely blocked by Souffrant.
Souffrant misses with a takedown

and Mason counters with a nice shoot takedown that brings the fighters to the ground.
Souffrant is breathing heavily.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!

Mason gets to his feet. Souffrant looking to butt scoot but the ref puts an end to that. On your feet son!

Mason clinches up against the cage.

The is referee keeping an eye on Mason - much more stalling and he will separate the fighters.

Mason escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.
Souffrant shoots in and drives through. Mason sprawls well.
Mason swings away but doesn't land with a series of punches.

Mason breaks from the clinch.
Mason looks to land a combination but Souffrant avoids it well.
Mason throws a nice head kick!
Souffrant shoots in for a takedown but Mason shows good takedown defense.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Maximillion Souffrant. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Mason lands a jab-cross combination.

Mason clinches with his opponent.
Mason scores with a shoulder strike.
Still in the clinch, Mason scores with a nice short uppercut.

Mason escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.
Mason tries to bum rush Souffrant with a series of wild strikes but Souffrant uses good footwork to avoid the assault.
Mason shoots in and drives through. Souffrant sprawls well.
Mason keeps the fight standing with a nice sprawl.
A combination from Mason does no damage.

Souffrant gets taken down but at least he's managed to land in guard.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Souffrant has momentary wrist control but Mason slips an elbow through the middle.
Mason is intent on slowing down the pace of the fight, simply looking to control.

Mason drops back for a leg! It's a sloppy attempt though and Mason jumps back into guard quickly, to retain the dominant position.

Souffrant is working for submissions here. He's thrown up his legs looking for a tringle but Mason frees his head nicely. Oh but Souffrant has switched to an armbar! Mason is tapping furiously! Lovely submission there!
