PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Karlssen Paulssen (ranked 3146 p4p, 4036 weight class) and Sammy Nyla (ranked 395 p4p, 467 weight class). These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 2 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Amsterdam, Karlssen Paulssen!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Sammy Nyla!
The judges for this bout are Sergei Dronov, Illya Tyunina and Viktor Lagutenko.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Paulssen looks to land a right hand but Nyla moved out of range.
Paulssen has been talking about how he's improved his wrestling in the run up to the fight so let's see if that's enough to sway the balance.
Paulssen slips a straight right by Nyla.
Nyla thows a left - swing and a miss!
The fighters circling - Nyla throws out the jab but it was never going to land.
Nyla throws a shot from downtown. Paulssen moves away and avoids it.
Nyla defending well as Paulssen loads up on a big left hand.

Paulssen fakes a strike and closes the distance, dragging Nyla to the ground. Paulssen is now in Nyla's guard.
Paulssen passes easily into side control. Nice work.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Nyla is not content to let Paulssen control the position.
The strikes coming from Paulssen are missing the target in this wave of attacks.
Nyla felt the need to train up his defensive grappling in the buildup to the fight. Presumably he was expecting to be in a difficult position like this, so let's see if he can get out of it.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Paulssen throws a knee to the body but it doesn't do much damage.
We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if Nyla can do anything to dispel that myth.

Paulssen is trying to land an Americana. He has the arm isolated but Nyla is keeping cool and he's avoided the danger for now.
Paulssen postures up a little and throws a couple of hammerfists but they don't connect properly.
Paulssen passes to full mount! That's big trouble for Nyla!
Nyla is squirming around, avoiding Paulssen's attempts to control the action.

Paulssen is going to have to think about doing something other than just controlling because Nyla is managing to avoid having the position dictated to him.

Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!

Paulssen thinks about going for a far side armbar but bails out and retains the dominant position instead.
And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.

Karlssen Paulssen dominated that round.
That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business.

Paulssen bobs and weaves into range and then changes levels and scores with a nice takedown into side control.

Paulssen tries for an arm triangle. That looks pretty tight to me. Is this one over!?! Possibly, maybe, no Paulssen has let go of the choke. Obviously it wasn't as tight as we thought!
Nyla regains half guard there - taking advantage of Paulssen's attempt to lay and pray for a moment.
Paulssen thows a huge punch but Nyla dodges it nicely.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Paulssen is pressing down on Nyla's thigh, looking to free his foot. Nyla is holding on for now.

Paulssen is looking to pass the guard... He's managed it - he's now in full mount!
Paulssen thuds his fist into the canvas! Oooouch!
Nyla is wriggling around trying to escape.

Paulssen swings around for an armbar but it's a sloppy attempt and Nyla is now in Paulssen's guard. A big mistake from Paulssen there, giving up the dominant position!

Paulssen has an active guard here but Nyla has managed to pass into half guard.

Paulssen is pressing down on Nyla's left leg trying to get back to full guard. He's managed it.

Paulssen is working actively off his back, looking to secure an arm or perhaps work for a triangle.
Nyla looking to control the position here, rather than advance.
Nyla really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Paulssen. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.

Paulssen is working the butterfly guard. He manages to land a nice scissor sweep and is now in half guard on the top. Nice move.

Nyla bucks up and manages to get a nice reversal! He's in guard on the top - nicely done!
Paulssen wants to sweep here but Nyla controlling him for the moment.

Nyla slows down the pace of the fight for a moment. He'll need to remain active if he doesn't want to see the fight stood back up.

Paulssen looking to try and escape his hips here, looking for a submission. It looks like he's going for a triangle but Nyla is defending well. Paulssen quickly switches to an armbar and extends the arm! Nyla has no choice but to tap, to a very quick submission! Wow, that was lightning fast! Paulssen celebrates on the cage, with the crowd.

Ladies and gentlemen, after 4:42 of round 2, we have a winner by way of Submission (Armbar). Karlssen Paulssen!
Karlssen Paulssen decided to hype himself up post fight. It was going well but he went on about it a bit too long and the crowd turned on him a little.
