PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a bantamweight MMA rules bout between Dom Cruz (ranked 441 p4p, 694 weight class) and Damen Mayer (ranked 23 p4p, 40 weight class). Over to our ring announcer for the fighter introductions!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the bantamweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 36 - 26 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Dom Cruz!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 28 - 24 - 1, fighting out of Sydney, Damen Mayer!
The judges for this bout are Thiago Cunha, Alexandre Firmino and Seu Braga.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Mayer lands with a hook. Cruz tried to avoid it but it clipped the top of his head.
Mayer just misses with a punch to the body.
Cruz throws a nice looking combination but Mayer bobs and weaves to avoid any damage.

Mayer closes the distance, clinches up and gets a nice trip takedown into side control. Very smooth.
Mayer tries to cartwheel into mount but he doesn't manage it.
Cruz tries to buck Mayer off but Mayer is having none of it.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Mayer goes for an armbar here - this could be all over! But no, Cruz has escaped beautifully and is now on top in side control! Oh, that's unlucky for Mayer but great work by Cruz.

This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!

Cruz with the ground and pound but Mayer regains half guard under the barage of strikes.

Cruz lands a big shot. The thud that echoes around the arena is like music to the fans' ears.
Cruz has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.

Mayer felt the need to train up his defensive grappling in the buildup to the fight. Presumably he was expecting to be in a difficult position like this, so let's see if he can get out of it.

Mayer tries to get back to half guard but can't.
The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily.

Cruz lands an elbow that was bordering on illegal but the referee lets it go with a warning.
Mayer is desperately trying to improve his position but Cruz has a good base and remains in mount.
Cruz lands a shot to the body, followed up by a shot to the exposed head of his trapped opponent.
Cruz cracks Mayer with a nasty head shot there - the crowd let out an audible gasp there, as the noise reverberated around the arena.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!

Cruz seems content to maintain position for now, rather than mounting any offense.

The two fighters exchange a few words. I couldn't hear what they were saying but maybe it's more fun if you make it up yourself. Cruz connects with a nice short shot to Mayer's temple.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Cruz working some ground and pound from close in. He's looking to maintain this position and strike for a while by the looks of things... although he'll probably advance to full mount in a minute now I've said that.

We've been hearing that Cruz has been drilling a lot of ground and pound in training, so let's see if he get the finish.

Cruz uses his free foot to push down on Mayer's thigh. Eventually he works his other foot free and he's advanced to mount - this is trouble for Mayer.

The crowd growing excited in anticipation of a finish here! Right on cue, Cruz cracks his opponent with a massive right hand that draws loud cheers!
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!

Dom Cruz dominated that round.
That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action.

Mayer lands an overhand left. A wild punch that just about connected.
Mayer takes a swing at Cruz's ribcage but misses.
Cruz tries to score a power double leg takedown but Mayer sees that one coming and sprawls well. That will dishearten Cruz somewhat.
Cruz throws a jab, cross combination which is slipped

and Mayer decides to take the opportunity to score a takedown. He's landed in Cruz's guard.
Cruz wants to sweep but no luck.

Cruz had isolated an arm as going for a kimura. Mayer defends it easily.

Cruz is pulling down on Mayer's head to control his posture.
Cruz is trying to control the position but Mayer postures up.

The referee has decided to stand the fighters back up, so we'll restart on the feet.

Cruz gets a double leg takedown into Mayer's guard.

Cruz avoids a guillotine attempt easily.

Mayer has his foot on Cruz's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Cruz works his way back into a safe position though.

Mayer is active off his back here, looking for submissions.
Cruz makes a bit of distance and scores with some ground and pound, still in guard.
Cruz is really dominating this fight. Is there anything that Mayer can do to turn this around?

Cruz is trying a forearm choke… I don't think that's going to do much at this level of the game.
Dom Cruz overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.

Mayer actively working from the bottom here.

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.

Cruz is working for a kimura but Mayer is defending it quite comfortably.

Mayer is looking to sinch up a guillotine here but Cruz pulls his head out easily.

That was a close second round but I would say that Dom Cruz will probably get the nod.

Nice straight punches there by Cruz. You know Roy Jones Jr respects the hands of Cruz.
The fight stays on the outside here - Cruz looks like he's thinking about clinching though.
Mayer tries a counter takedown but it's more of a dummy move, and he uses it to push himself away.

Mayer has a couple of punches blocked by Cruz.
Mayer manages to get underhooks and slows down the pace for a moment.

Cruz is trying to pull guard but being pressed up against the cage enables Mayer to keep the fight standing.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Dom Cruz. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Mayer struggles to land a body shot inside as Cruz controls his hands.

Mayer is fighting off a takedown attempt but Cruz is just too persistent for him and manages to trip Mayer to the mat. Mayer regains guard as soon as the fighters hit the mat.

Cruz got a little sloppy there for a moment and Mayer has worked his way into a loose triangle - can he finish it?! No, Cruz has managed to get both his arms back between Mayer's legs - danger averted.

Cruz stands over his opponent and dives in with a flying punch! Mayer throws up his legs and catches Cruz in a triangle! Oh this looks tight! Cruz tries to escape but he's forced to tap! Wow, fantastic work there by Mayer! That came out of nowhere!
