PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Jolly Roger (ranked 1557 p4p, 481 weight class) and Willy Mataitai (ranked 216 p4p, 72 weight class). Roger comes to the cage accompanied by Under Jolly Roger. Willy Mataitai told me before the fight that he's been watching a lot of DVDs so let's see if that helps him in this one! I can't wait to find out!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.

And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 11 - 3 - 0, fighting out of New York, Willy Mataitai!
The judges for this bout are Eddie Farnsworth, Chad Campbell and Dean Styles.

The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Roger walks straight into a jab right on the nose. That one stung - he's blinking and trying to clear his head.
Mataitai scores with a punch to the head.
Roger moves away from the strike by Mataitai.
Mataitai throws out a loose jab but Roger uses good head movement to avoid it.
Mataitai is the aggressor but that punch slipped nicely by Roger.
Roger half commits to a counter takedown before pushing away, out of range.
Mataitai misses with a body shot.
Roger thows a left - swing and a miss!
Roger lands a glancing blow to the side of Mataitai's head.
Roger slips under a jab.
Roger goes for a double leg but Mataitai avoids the attempt and the two fighters end up clinched against the cage as Mataitai continues to drive forward.
Mataitai looked like he wanted to counter with a punch but didn't throw it.

Mataitai's corner calls for him to break the clinch, which he does.
Roger tries to drive through with a takedown attempt but Mataitai defends well and Roger ends up having to push Mataitai into the cage where they will battle it out in the clinch.
Mataitai goes for a body shot but it's blocked.

Roger has Mataitai pressed up against the cage. He's trying to work for a single leg takedown. Roger pulls back from the cage and twists to the side, sending Mataitai tumbling to the mat - Roger dives into Mataitai's guard.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!

Mataitai is trying to get back to his feet now but his leg is trapped.
Roger is looking to improve his position.

Mataitai postures up and decides to stand up, from the half guard. The ref calls for Roger to stand up.

Roger manages to get an easy takedown there - catching Mataitai on his heels. He'll look to pass Mataitai's guard now, I'm sure.

Roger thows some rabbit punches from the bottom but they don't do any damage.

The fighters are starting to get a bit slippery now, which will make submissions a bit more difficult.

Roger is working for a kimura but Mataitai is defending it quite comfortably.
Roger is trying to control the action in half guard but Mataitai is working away on the bottom, looking perhaps to get back to full guard.

Roger takes advantage of the dominant position to land a couple of big hammer fists.

Roger wants to free his trapped foot but Mataitai is holding on for dear life with his legs.
Roger seems very keen to just sit and control from half guard but Mataitai does not like that idea so much and is remaining active off his back.

Mataitai cracks Roger with a nice right hand that draws applause from the crowd.

Mataitai might want to mix his strikes up a bit more. He's just going for head shots at the moment and that can become a bit predictable.

Roger moves into range and connects with a jab.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!

Roger shoots in looking for a takedown but Mataitai manages to keep the fight standing, pushing Roger's face into the canvas for good measure before circling away.

That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Jolly Roger. That's going to take a lot out of him.

Roger looks up at the clock. Bad move! Mataitai lands a right hand from hell, dropping Roger. Mataitai pounces and finishes the fight with a flurry of punches and elbows.
