PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a bantamweight MMA rules bout between Romeo Del Gaiso (ranked 2930 p4p, 3724 weight class) and Charles Kenway Jr (ranked 178 p4p, 218 weight class). Del Gaiso comes to the cage accompanied by Deorro, Elvis Crespo & Henry Fong - Pica. Romeo Del Gaiso has the better chin. Will he look to stand and bang today?

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the bantamweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 5 - 4 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Romeo Del Gaiso!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 7 - 7 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Charles Kenway Jr!
The judges for this bout are Robert Twigg, Frank Dennis and Wesley Smith.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Kenway Jr keeps the fight on the outside.
Del Gaiso changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Kenway Jr tries to avoid it but Del Gaiso manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Kenway Jr to the ground. Kenway Jr escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet.

Kenway Jr feints and then dives in with a takedown. That was a long way out but the feint bought him enough time to close the distance and complete the takedown. Now we'll play guard for a bit and see who can get the better of that position.

Kenway Jr has gone for a leg lock! Del Gaiso slips out almost immediately though and dives into Kenway Jr's guard.


Kenway Jr working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Del Gaiso doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Del Gaiso manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.
Del Gaiso postures up to throw the ground and pound strikes but they don't connect.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if Kenway Jr can do anything to dispel that myth.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Del Gaiso throwing elbows and punches but not connecting, as Kenway Jr works some decent striking defense from the bottom.

Kenway Jr has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Del Gaiso can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself.

Del Gaiso drops back for a leg! It's a sloppy attempt though and Del Gaiso jumps back into guard quickly, to retain the dominant position.
Kenway Jr is looking to stand up but Del Gaiso isn't so interested in that idea.
Del Gaiso has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.

The crowd are starting to boo a lack of action.
Kenway Jr is working the butterfly guard. He manages to land a nice scissor sweep and is now in half guard on the top. Nice move.

Kenway Jr seems to be taking a bit of a break to think of his next move. He lands a short punch in the meantime.

Kenway Jr is trying to control the action in half guard but Del Gaiso is working away on the bottom, looking perhaps to get back to full guard.

Kenway Jr is looking for a kimura but Del Gaiso is holding onto that half guard position, so it's hard for Kenway Jr to get the leverage.

The two fighters exchange a few words. I couldn't hear what they were saying but maybe it's more fun if you make it up yourself. Kenway Jr connects with a nice short shot to Del Gaiso's temple.

Kenway Jr working over Del Gaiso with some ground and pound. Del Gaiso looks like he wants out of this position, which is understandable.
Del Gaiso really does look like a pencil wearing a pair of gloves. Let's hope he has a gameplan to suit that ridiculous body shape.

Kenway Jr seems content to maintain position for now, rather than mounting any offense.
Kenway Jr thows a huge punch but Del Gaiso dodges it nicely.

And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.

Charles Kenway Jr dominated that round.
The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare each other down, ready to get back to the action.

Del Gaiso has hold of Kenway Jr's arm here. He's working for an Americana. It looks like he might have it! Kenway Jr tries to escape but he's just digging himself in deeper - Del Gaiso cranks the arm and Kenway Jr screams in pain! The ref makes a decision and ends the fight before the tap - no complains from Kenway Jr, who is just happy to have his arm attached to his body.
