PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Jack Knight (ranked 4192 p4p, 4816 weight class) and Donal Tromp (ranked 502 p4p, 529 weight class). Tromp has chosen In The Hall of the Trompen King as his entrance music. Jack Knight has the edge in experience - let's see if he can make that count tonight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, Jack Knight!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, Donal Tromp!
The judges for this bout are Darius Henderson, Bruno Hogan and Hugh Johnson.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Tromp throws a right hand that misses

and Knight counters by moving into the clinch.
Tromp looks really tired already! That doesn't bode well for a good, competitive fight!
Tromp is pressed up against the cage. Knight has hold of a leg and is looking to drag Tromp down to the mat. Tromp avoids the attempt though and has circled away. We're back to striking at a distance.
Tromp misses with a jab, cross combination.
Knight seemed to be looking to counter by closing the distance.
Tromp misses with a two punch combination.
Knight appears to be looking for a big counter.

Knight shoots in with a lovely double leg takedown. Tromp manages to land in full guard to minimise the damage.
Knight stays in close to Tromp's body and controls the position.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Tromp can't keep his opponent in guard - Knight advances to half guard, no doubt looking to mount.

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.
Tromp keeping his head moving to avoid the ground and pound.
We've had a lack of effective grappling in the last minute or so, which could well see a referee standup.
Knight thows a wild elbow that connects with the canvas.
Knight perhaps working for something from half guard, or maybe not. It looks like he's just sitting there.

The referee has stepped in and called for a break in the action. We'll restart on the feet.
Donal Tromp seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Knight looks frustrated there after his takedown attempt is stuffed easily.
Knight fails to land with a series of punches.

Knight postures up and scores with a shot to the body and a follow up elbow to the head.
Our spies down at at Cozad MMA Helsinki inform us that Tromp has really been working on his submissions in the buildup to this fight. Will it pay off?

Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.
Knight wants to pass the guard but Tromp is keeping the position.

Knight has a body lock and is looking for a takedown. Tromp is bouncing around trying to prevent the takedown and somehow he has indeed managed to stay on his feet.

Tromp tries to break the clinch but Knight is controlling the position.

Knight manages to get an easy takedown there - catching Tromp on his heels. He'll look to pass Tromp's guard now, I'm sure.
Knight passes Tromp's right leg, so he's now in half guard.
Knight has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.

Knight decides to stand up and try his luck on the feet.

Knight has taken the fight to the clinch.

Knight is working on a single leg takedown against the cage. Tromp can't fight it off and eventually Knight manages to take the fight to the floor. Tromp looks annoyed but at least he's managed to land in guard.
Tromp is wriggling around but Knight manages to pass to half guard.

Knight looks over to his corner - he wants some instructions but his corner are not responding.

Knight looking for a kimura but he'll have to free his other leg if he wants to finish that. Perhaps he's just using it as a distraction technique.
Tromp is breathing heavily.

Knight passes to side control.
Knight controlling the position from side mount.

Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.
Knight is really dominating this fight. Is there anything that Tromp can do to turn this around?

Knight works to advance to full mount. Tromp defends for a few seconds but eventually he succumbs.

Knight is working for a guillotine from mount but Tromp frees his head quite easily.

That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business. Let's get this one finished - here comes the final round!


Knight closes the distance, clinches up and gets a nice trip takedown into side control. Very smooth.
Knight is chipping away with strikes.
Knight is staying tight to Tromp's torso, preventing him from escaping.

Knight wants to work for a kimura but he's foiled early by Tromp, who protects the arm well.
Knight remains in side control and seems content to stay there. It's a versatile position from which he can work both strikes and submissions, whilst maintaining that control, so maybe he'll sit here for a while.
Tromp takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.

Knight takes a little break here. Tromp wants to take advantage but he is being controlled well.
Knight tries to cartwheel into mount but he doesn't manage it.

Knight's ground tactics aren't going to win him many fans. Let's hope he's got fireworks for us if he gets back to his feet because he's not doing much on the ground.

My god... these two guys really need to pick up the pace or everyone will leave to go get a beer.

Knight remains in side control and seems content to stay there. It's a versatile position from which he can work both strikes and submissions, whilst maintaining that control, so maybe he'll sit here for a while.
Knight has controlled the position for a good 20 seconds, which will no doubt be starting to frustrate his opponent.

Well I reckon that's a shut out for Knight, winning every round. Will the judges agree? They are the ones who matter, even if they are often depressingly incompetent. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
