This TWGC bout is 1 fifteen minute round in the lightweight division. Introducing today's competitors. In the red corner, competing out of Los Angeles, with a TWGC record of 17 wins and 14 losses; Bjj Steel! And in the blue corner, fighting out of Los Angeles, with a TWGC record of 10 wins and 6 losses; Rico Cole!
The judges for this bout are Eddie Farnsworth, Jorge Garcia and John Kavanagh.


The fighters connect hands in the middle of the mat and we are under way.
Steel shoots for a double leg takedown but Cole sprawls well. He's pushed Steel's face into the mat and manages to get back to his feet relatively easily.
Steel looks for a takedown here. Will he get it? Cole is fending him off so far but Steel persists. Nope, Cole circles away and we're back to standing.
A telegraphed takedown attempt from Cole is defended easily by Steel.
Steel tries to counter with a takedown but Cole is quick to defend against it.
Cole will have to do better than that with his takedown attempts.

Cole closes the distance and after a bit of a stuggle, scores a takedown into Steel's guard.

Cole trying to control but Steel is working from the bottom.
Cole tries to free his leg and advance position but Steel is retaining full guard.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Cole drops back looking for a heel hook - he quickly realises he's not going to get it but Steel manages to dive on top of him before he can escape and now Cole has Steel in his guard.

Cole bucks up whilst keeping hold of a body lock, managing to reverse the position. Now he's in top in Steel's guard.

Cole stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Steel swivels though and keeps the full guard.

Cole moves to his opponent's back but Steel bucks him off and ends up in guard. A bit of a disaster there for Cole.

Steel really is built like a bowling ball. I wonder if he'd roll if you pushed him down a hill...

Cole looking for submissions off his back, moving his hips, looking for an opening.

Cole has his foot on Steel's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Steel works his way back into a safe position though.
Cole tries to land a sweep but no joy.
Steel slows down the pace of the fight, as he sits in guard.
Cole is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent.

Steel stands and throws Cole's legs to the side, diving into side control.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Cole is positioning himself to get back to half guard.
Cole is trying to escape the position but Steel is controlling the position.
Cole is looking for a sweep.

Cole is trying to get back to half guard. He's pushing on Steel's leg. He's managed it. Nice work.
Steel prevents Cole from improving his position.

Our spies down at at 3Band MMA inform us that Cole has really been working on his submissions in the buildup to this fight. Will it pay off?
Steel stands and throws Cole's legs to the side, diving into side control.

You can see the frustration on Cole's face, being in this tough position on the bottom.
Steel just content to control the position.
Steel wants to control but Cole is keeping him busy.
A bit of a lull in the action. I'm sure it will pick up again soon... even if the ref has to physically pick them up and put them back on their feet.

Steel is staying tight to Cole's torso, preventing him from escaping.

Still in half guard, Steel seems content to control.
Cole is looking for a sweep. Steel is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position.
Cole is trying to maintain the position but Steel is very close to passing his half guard.

Cole tries to roll over but Steel keeps him under control.
Steel passes the half guard and he's now in mount! Big trouble for Cole!

Steel's ground tactics aren't going to win him many fans. Let's hope he's got fireworks for us if he gets back to his feet because he's not doing much on the ground.

Cole is trying to reverse the position but instead Steel has taken his back - oops!

Cole is very frustrated here, being controlled quite effectively by Steel.

Steel has controlled the position for a good 20 seconds, which will no doubt be starting to frustrate his opponent.
Cole is defending well here and trying to improve his position.
What can Cole do to escape this position? He's going to have to figure it out pretty quick if he wants to stay in the fight!

Steel really has the hooks in deep now - there seems like no escape for Cole.
Steel has the hooks in. Cole is trying to push off one leg but he has to do so cautiously to avoid being submitted.
