PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between John Fuller (ranked 1502 p4p, 3973 weight class) and Ryo Hamada (ranked 222 p4p, 483 weight class). Well, the cameraman is lingering on a pretty young lady for a bit too long there. Keep your eyes on the prize buddy or you'll miss the fighter intros!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 10 - 7 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, John Fuller!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 7 - 4 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Ryo Hamada!
The judges for this bout are Hugh Johnson, Damien Edna and Skip Squint.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Hamada throws a head kick that misses.
Fuller throws out a loose jab but Hamada uses good head movement to avoid it.
Hamada misses with a head kick.
Jab, jab by Hamada - just one landing.
Fuller ducks down and throws a hook to the body but Hamada moves away.

Fuller shoots in and bounces Hamada off the cage to secure the takedown into guard.
Hamada wants to get back to his feet but Fuller is in a dominant position and won't allow it.
Fuller pressing down on his opponent's thigh, looking to pass guard. Hamada is keeping the position for now.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Hamada tries to wriggle free to get back to his feet but he's given up his back! Oops.

Fuller seems to have improved his submission grappling technique since last time we saw him. Let's see if he can pull off a submission.

Fuller is looking to finish the fight by rear naked choke. Hamada knows exactly what he's got planned though, so he's defending well. Maybe a few strikes would soften Hamada for a finish.

Hamada has been taking part in the yoga sessions down at Doom's Gym. Presumably he's going to look for a slick submission... Or maybe he's looking to avoid one.

Fuller is looking for a kimura but Hamada is holding onto that half guard position, so it's hard for Fuller to get the leverage.

Hamada wants to get back to his feet.
Fuller landing with strikes to the body and head, softening up his opponent.
Fuller wants to pass to mount but Hamada is defending the position.
Hamada slips a foot under and gets full guard. Nice work.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Hamada bucks up whilst keeping hold of a body lock, managing to reverse the position. Now he's in top in Fuller's guard.

Fuller has a closed guard, preventing Hamada from standing up.
Fuller throws some sloppy strikes off his back.

Fuller had isolated an arm as going for a kimura. Hamada defends it easily.
Fuller lands a beautiful sweep and he's now moved into his opponent's guard.


Fuller thinks about going for a leg but decides against it, in order to maintain the position.
Fuller wants to pass the guard but Hamada is keeping the position.
Fuller prevents Hamada from getting back to his feet.
Fuller lands a couple of digs.
And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.

The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business.

Hamada looks to land a left hand but Fuller moved out of range nicely.
A punch lands to the side of Fuller 's head but he takes it in his stride.
Fuller avoids a lazy jab quite easily.
Fuller appears to be looking for a counter takedown.

Hamada moves forwards but Fuller connects with a nice, crisp jab.
Hamada is looking to take this fight into the clinch.

We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Fuller tries to drive through with a takedown attempt but Hamada defends well and Fuller ends up having to push Hamada into the cage where they will battle it out in the clinch.

Fuller turns his back and goes for a hip toss. It's a bit messy but it gets the job done and Fuller manages to end up in side control.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!

Fuller is trying to get an arm triangle but Hamada is defending well.

Fuller is trying to land an Americana. He has the arm isolated but Hamada is keeping cool and he's avoided the danger for now.
Hamada manages to work his way to half guard, despite Fuller's best efforts.
Fuller takes advantage of the dominant position to land a couple of big hammer fists.
Fuller not throwing his punches with enough precision this time.
Hamada wants to improve his position but Fuller is controlling well.
Fuller is keen to just control but Hamada is a slippery customer.

Fuller is looking for a kimura. It's going to be difficult to finish that from half guard though and Hamada defends it well.

Ryo Hamada seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.

Hamada slips in close and lands a nice hook before moving back out of range.

and Hamada counters nicely by changing levels and landing a hook to the body.

Fuller throws a lazy right hand but Hamada sees it coming a mile off and sidesteps it easily.
Hamada lands a powerful looking uppercut that connected with his opponent's jaw.
No luck for Fuller with that takedown attempt.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for John Fuller. That's going to take a lot out of him.
A telegraphed right hand from Fuller misses the target.
Hamada looked like he wanted to counter with a punch but didn't throw it.
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.

It seemed like Hamada was going to counter with the hook but didn't fully commit to it.

Hamada feints a straight left to the body, then turns around with a flashy move and hits Fullers jaw with a dramatic spinning back fist!

Hamada looks to land a right hand but Fuller moved out of range.
Hamada throws a monster uppercut resembling something out of street fighter but it doesn't land.
Fuller takes a shot right to the bread basket.

Fuller thows a left - swing and a miss!

A momentary lapse in concentration from Hamada enables Fuller to shoot in and score with a neat double leg. Hamada manages to secure a closed guard as the fighters hit the mat.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!

Hamada has butterfly guard. He's looking to stand up here. He pushes Fuller off him and springs to his feet nicely. The crowd applauds.
Fuller takes a really solid shot there but just smiles back and shrugs his shoulders.

Fuller uses good footwork to get in and out and land a nice right hand before Hamada has time to react.

Hamada will need to close the distance a bit before he attacks - that leg kick was thrown from too far away.

Fuller escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.
Hamada tries to clinch but Fuller is having none of it.
Ryo Hamada seems to be getting the better of the standup.

enabling Fuller to counter with a crisp jab.
Hamada takes a step towards his opponent and connects with a left hand, before circling away.
Boom, another hit is landed. "You're gunna get knocked out" taunts Hamada, as that shot connected.
A looping hook to the body misses from Fuller. Hamada does a little dance to reset his feet.
Hamada lands a slapping body shot.
Hamada has used his reach advantage pretty well so far tonight.
Fuller throws an uppercut from half a mile away. Hamada sees it coming and avoids it easily.
Fuller lands a vicious shot with the stealth of a sniper and the strength of a viper. Are vipers that strong? I can think of lots of things that are stronger than a viper - not many rhyme with sniper though.
Fuller throws a hook to the side of Hamada's head but Hamada sees it coming and ducks under it beautifully.

Fuller displays some good footwork, moving neatly out of range as Hamada throws out the jab.
Hamada lands with a cross to side of his opponent's head.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!

Hamada looks to throw the jab but Fuller is out of range.

Fuller is looking to take a break and control but Hamada is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.

Ryo Hamada comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
I think Hamada has won this one but let's see whether the judges agree with me. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
