PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a bantamweight MMA rules bout between Simba Smith (ranked 4452 p4p, 4316 weight class) and Declan Duris (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Duris has chosen Paradise as his entrance music. We have two fighters making their debuts here, so let's see who comes out of this one with their first professional victory.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the bantamweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Simba Smith!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Declan Duris!
The judges for this bout are Chris Downing, Daniel Franklin and Alan Glass.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Smith gets a takedown into half guard.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Smith wants to work for an arm triangle but Duris is really keeping half guard well and defending the submission attempt.
Duris wants to get back to full guard.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Smith is trying to work for a kimura but Duris is defending well.
Duris tries to get to full guard but Smith has control of the leg.
Duris is a painfully thin specimen of a man. You do wonder whether a good body kick would snap him clean in two.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Duris is trying to control but can't.

Smith wants to pass the guard but Duris is defending well.
Duris wants to improve his position but Smith is controlling well.

Smith seems to be working for a kimura but Duris defends the submission attempt.

My god... these two guys really need to pick up the pace or everyone will leave to go get a beer.
Duris is trying to control but Smith passes into side control!

You can see the frustration on Duris's face as Smith controls the position.
Duris tries to work a leg under to get back to half guard but Smith wriggles his own leg back out and remains in side control.

The referee has decided to stand the fighters back up, so we'll restart on the feet.

Smith feints and then dives in with a takedown. That was a long way out but the feint bought him enough time to close the distance and complete the takedown. Now we'll play guard for a bit and see who can get the better of that position.

Duris pushes Smith off for just long enough to get back to his feet. Very athletic spring there.
Smith pulls out of a head kick attempt.
Duris feints the counter takedown.
Smith is looking to clinch.
Smith tries to clinch there but Duris circles away.

Smith looking to shoot here. He's gone for it and he's landed a takedown into side control! Oh, that's bad for Duris!
This has been an exciting period of action!
Smith is working Duris over with some ground and pound from side control.
Smith advances to mount.
Smith controlling from the full mount.

The referee warns Duris that he has to improve his position here as he takes two more clean shots to the head.
Duris is trying desperately to improve position.
Smith controlling the position easily from mount.

Smith goes for an armbar but Duris turns quickly into his guard - lovely anticipation from Duris.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Smith throws a couple of weedy looking strikes off his back.
And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.

The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business.


Smith moves into the clinch.
Duris can't break the clinch.
Smith throws a knee to the head but misses.

Duris pulls guard effortlessly.
Duris wants to improve his position but instead Smith has moved into half guard.
Smith looks over to his corner - he wants some instructions but his corner are not responding.
Duris is trying to control but can't.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Smith is looking for a kimura. It's pretty deep but Duris still has the half guard so he's probably OK. Oh, Duris has exploded into a beautiful escape there and after a quick scramble, he's ended up in side control on top! Nice work!

Smith manages to get one leg in to regain half guard.
Smith is looking for a sweep. Duris is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position.

Smith has one foot on Duris's thigh - he pushes off and manages to get back to his feet.
A telegraphed takedown attempt from Duris is defended easily by Smith.
Duris shoots in but no luck this time.
Smith changes levels looking for a counter takedown but doesn't commit.
Simba Smith is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Duris shoots in looking for a takedown. Smith tries to sprawl out of it but Duris keeps driving through. The fighters are pinned against the cage. Smith manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing.
Simba Smith has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Declan Duris.
Smith throws a shot from downtown. Duris moves away and avoids it.

Excellent takedown into side control there by Smith.

Smith goes for an armbar! This could be all over! Wait, no, Duris rolls with the submission and now he's on top in Smith's guard! Nice work there by Duris!
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!
Duris won't allow Smith to get back to his feet.
Smith is pulling down on Duris's head to control his posture.
Simba Smith overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.

Duris stopping the sweep attempt from Smith.
Smith is working the butterfly guard. He manages to land a nice scissor sweep and is now in half guard on the top. Nice move.

Smith perhaps working for something from half guard, or maybe not. It looks like he's just sitting there.
Duris wants to improve his position but Smith is controlling well.
Smith is trying to get back to his feet now but his leg is trapped.
Smith moves into full mount! Duris won't be happy about that!

Duris slips a leg in and gets back to half guard.

Smith is trying for a guillotine from the top but the pressure isn't in the right place so Duris is just riding it out for now. Smith eventually gives up the hold.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Duris is trying to stand.
And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.

Simba Smith dominated that second round.
The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action! Let's hear some noise people - this is the final round!

Smith wants to clinch up but Duris keeps it at a distance.
Duris changes levels for a counter takedown but doesn't follow through with his attempt.
Duris shoots in for a takedown but Smith shows good takedown defense there and keeps this one on the feet.
Duris tries to close the distance and clinch up against the cage but Smith paws at him with a jab and circles away.
Duris closes the distance and clinches up with Smith, looking for a takedown. Duris pushes Smith against the cage but Smith circles to the side and manages to break the clinch.
No luck for Duris with that takedown attempt.

Duris shoots in for a takedown but Smith shows good takedown defense there and keeps this one on the feet.

Smith throws the overhand right but ducks down into a quick takedown attempt. Duris was covering up waiting for the punch and Smith finishes the takedown easily into guard.

Duris takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.
Smith is stalling in the full guard.

There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.
Smith seems to have a rather negative gameplan on the ground. He seems keen to just score the takedown and hold down Duris for as long as he can get away with.
The referee must be thinking about standing these guys back up.
Smith works over Duris with some ground and pound from guard.
Smith controlling from the top position.

Smith gets to his feet. Duris looking to butt scoot but the ref puts an end to that. On your feet son!
Duris avoids the clinch attempt nicely.

Smith lands a knee to the body and follows it up with some ground and pound to the head. That will wear Duris down.
Declan Duris has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.

Smith decides to stand back up.
An inside leg kick from Smith misses.

Smith drives through with a really nice takedown into side control.

Duris throws his opponent off and manages to get back to his feet! Nicely done!

Smith looks over to his corner - he wants some instructions but his corner are not responding.

Simba Smith showed his dominance in that final round.
Well Smith has outscored his opponent in every aspect of the fight today. Only a scarily incompetent judge or two will keep him from a well deserved win... Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
