PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Jakie Chan (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and DeeJay Kawana (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). DeeJay Kawana will no doubt be looking to use his reach advantage to good effect.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 4 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Jakie Chan!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 5 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, DeeJay Kawana!
The judges for this bout are Hirohito Nitta, Kenichi Hosakawa and Yuuki Gou.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Kawana tries to shoot in for a takedown. He's got hold of a leg but Chan swivels and escapes.
Kawana throws a head kick that Chan semi-blocks.


It looks like Jakie Chan has been cut.
Chan scores with a shot to the body.
Kawana tries to clinch but Chan moves out of range.
Chan dances in quickly and lands a nice inside leg kick on Kawana. That did some damage!

Chan closes the distance and looks for a trip takedown... aaaand he's got it - Chan lands in his opponent's guard.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.

Chan gets to his feet. Kawana looking to butt scoot but the ref puts an end to that. On your feet son!

Chan rushes Kawana and pushes him back against the cage in a clinch.
Chan wants a takedown but no success here.

Chan has Kawana pressed up against the cage. He's trying to work for a single leg takedown. Chan pulls back from the cage and twists to the side, sending Kawana tumbling to the mat - Chan dives into Kawana's guard.
Chan wants to control from the top but Kawana keeps moving.
Kawana has a closed guard, preventing Chan from standing up.
Kawana lands a beautiful switch and he's in full mount! That could spell trouble for Chan!

Chan is trying to get to the cage to help him get back to his feet.
Chan suckers Kawana into throwing a sloppy strike and uses the momentum to reverse the position beautifully! Chan is now in Kawana's guard!
Chan slows down the pace of the fight, as he sits in guard.
Kawana is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Kawana avoiding any damage from the ground and pound.

My god... these two guys really need to pick up the pace or everyone will leave to go get a beer.
Chan trying to control but Kawana is working from the bottom.
Kawana is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.

Kawana pushes Chan off and gets back to his feet.
Kawana looks gassed!

Chan fakes with an overhand right and moves in to clinch with Kawana, pushing him back against the cage.
Chan content to slow the pace in the clinch.
Kawana is trying to break free.

Chan ties up his opponent against the cage and manages to drag the fight down to the ground. Chan no doubt will be looking to work submissions from his guard.
Kawana throws and elbow that misses. Chan uses the momentum to reverse the position. He's now in Kawana's guard. Nice move by Chan!
Chan passes Kawana's right leg, so he's now in half guard.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Chan looks over to his corner - he wants some instructions but his corner are not responding.

Chan decides to stand and escape the position.
Kawana clinches but Chan breaks the clinch

and Chan counters by moving into the clinch. Good anticipation by Chan.
Chan prevents the takedown attempt.
Chan has hold of a leg and is looking for a trip takedown. Kawana avoids it nicely though and we remain in the clinch.
Nice elbow from Chan.
Chan using the Thai plumb to throw knees but Kawana has his back arched nicely, preventing the strike.

Chan breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat.
A really sloppy takedown attempt there from Chan.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Jakie Chan. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Kawana looks to clinch

and Chan decides to take the opportunity to score a takedown. He's landed in Kawana's guard.
Kawana looking for a sweep. Not yet Kawana, not yet.
Chan postures up to throw the ground and pound strikes but they don't connect.
Chan is pushing down on Kawana's leg trying to pass to half guard. Kawana is fighting to maintain full guard but Chan has managed to sneak the leg through.
Chan really does look like a pencil wearing a pair of gloves. Let's hope he has a gameplan to suit that ridiculous body shape.

Chan gets to his feet - back to striking we go!
Kawana is looking to score with low kicks.
Chan takes a punch to the jaw and another one to the bread basket.

Chan gets the takedown into side control.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!

Chan looking for an arm triangle but it's way too loose to do anything.
Kawana is looking to reverse the position.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Chan moving around in side mount but really he's just happy to control for now.
Kawana is trying to get back to half guard. He's pushing on Chan's leg. He's managed it. Nice work.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

The fight stays on the outside here - Chan looks like he's thinking about clinching though.
Kawana looks to clinch

and Chan counters with a single leg into guard. Kawana didn't expect that.
Chan advances to half guard.
Chan works his way into side control.
Chan trying to control the action but Kawana is working from the bottom.
Kawana can't do much from the bottom here.
Chan slows the pace down.

Chan wants to work for a kimura but he's foiled early by Kawana, who protects the arm well.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

Kawana tries to improve position but can't.
Kawana sneaks a leg under to get back to half guard.
Kawana wants to sweep but Chan has passed to side control!

Chan is pausing for a moment. What's he doing? It looks like he's clearing his nose. Oh dude! He's shot a load of snot all down Kawana's shoulder. That is not cool.
Jakie Chan overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.
Kawana trying to control but Chan flips him over like a cheap hooker and has his back!
Good control from Chan.

The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.
Kawana wants to escape the position.
Chan keeps control of the position easily here as Kawana tries to buck him off.
Kawana turns into Chan and is now in his guard.
Kawana throwing strikes but missing.

Kawana trying to stand up but can't free himself from Chan's guard.

Chan wants to control here, rather than go for any submissions from the bottom. At least for now.
Chan manages to land a sweep and now he's in mount on top!

Chan stands up from the dominant position. He obviously fancies his chances standing.
Kawana misses with a takedown

so Chan counters with a double leg into guard. Good agility.
Chan trying to control but Kawana is working from the bottom.

A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Chan accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand.
Chan connects with a couple of short punches.
Kawana wants to stand and escape but Chan is having none of it.
Chan is taking a break and basically stalling. The referee will not allow him to do that for long.
Chan trying to control but Kawana is working from the bottom.
Kawana thows some rabbit punches from the bottom but they don't do any damage.
Kawana looking to sweep using the butterfly guard but Chan puts pay to that idea as he passes nicely into half guard.
Chan slips a nice elbow through Kawana's hands, connecting with Kawana's forehead.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Jakie Chan dominated that second round.
The cut man is working on Jakie Chan's cut.
The minute break is over - no more time for sponges and pep talks - back to the action! This is the final round!


Kawana tries to grapple but his opponent circles

so Chan counters with a double leg into guard. Good agility.
Hammerfist, elbow! yells Chan's corner. There ya go! There ya go!
Chan trying to pass the guard but can't manage it just yet.
Chan wants to stand and escape but instead Kawana has hit a sweep and he's now on top in guard.
Chan pulls Kawana in close to his closed guard and prevents Kawana from doing any damage or advancing position.

Both fighters are breathing heavily.
Chan's corner is telling him to maintain position.
Kawana utilising some decent striking defenses from the guard, preventing the ground and pound.
There's a bit of a scramble here and now Kawana is on top in guard.
Kawana trying to control but Chan is working from the bottom.
Kawana really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Chan. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.
Chan is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent.
Kawana wanted to stand there but Chan had control of the position.

The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.
Chan is avoiding any damage by keeping wrist control.
Chan tries to land a sweep but no joy.
Chan is pulling down on Kawana's head. It's preventing any offense from Kawana, at least for the moment.
Chan is looking to stand up but Kawana isn't so interested in that idea.

The referee stands the fighters back up. Jakie Chan just wasn't active enough from the dominant position.
Kawana wants to clinch but Chan slips to the side

and Chan counters by moving into the clinch. Good anticipation by Chan.
Chan tries to score a body lock takedown but Kawana shows good agility there to stay on his feet.

Chan breaks from the clinch.

Chan scores a takedown into full mount!
Chan is landing with some decent strikes but Kawana is trying to advance his position so the referee is letting the fight continue.
Kawana keeping his composure momentarily, calmly looking to get back to half guard.
Chan lands a couple of nice shots there from mount.
Kawana is in a horrible position here. Chan smacks him with another shot as he tries to escape the position.
Kawana is looking to improve his position but Chan isn't that keen on the idea.
DeeJay Kawana has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Kawana is persisting with the attempt to improve his position.
Kawana flailing away with punches but nothing is landing.
Chan tucks in and makes sure he doesn't lose the dominant position.
Chan has controlled the position for a good 20 seconds, which will no doubt be starting to frustrate his opponent.

Chan has hold of Kawana's left arm, perhaps looking for a submission. The two fighters tussle over control of the isolated limb and Kawana manages to get his arm back to his side and away from danger.

And that's the end of the fight!
Jakie Chan showed his dominance in that final round.
Well I reckon that's a shut out for Chan, winning every round. Will the judges agree? They are the ones who matter, even if they are often depressingly incompetent. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
