PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Phil Rivers (ranked 1273 p4p, 1009 weight class) and Nori Voluspa (ranked 172 p4p, 139 weight class). Well, the cameraman is lingering on a pretty young lady for a bit too long there. Keep your eyes on the prize buddy or you'll miss the fighter intros!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 7 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Phil Rivers!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 4 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Nori Voluspa!
The judges for this bout are Jorge Garcia, Franklyn Lucas and Alyssa Summers.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Rivers fails to land with a series of punches.
Voluspa uses good footwork to avoid the strikes from Rivers.
We can't be sure of the tactics at this early stage but we have heard that Voluspa has been working on his takedowns a lot in the buildup to the fight and we can only assume he's going to look to take this to the mat.
Voluspa's hands are dropping dangerously low here and Rivers connects clean with a right hook that sends him down to one knee! Voluspa scrambles back to his feet.
Voluspa fails with an attempt to clinch.
Rivers pushing out the jab but it's not landing.
Rivers misses with a jab, cross combination.
Rivers misses the shot to the body.
Voluspa closes the distance and clinches up with Rivers, looking for a takedown. Voluspa pushes Rivers against the cage but Rivers circles to the side and manages to break the clinch.
Rivers is looking for a counter combo.
Good exchange - Rivers coming out on top.
Rivers keeps the fight standing with a nice sprawl.
A big right from Rivers misses.
Rivers lands with an uppercut that bounces Voluspa off the cage and back into range.
Rivers throws a series of punches but Voluspa moves out of range.

Voluspa moves into the clinch.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.
Rivers throws a hook to the body. More of an arm punch but it's all scoring with the judges.

Voluspa gets the body lock takedown. After a quick scramble, Rivers regains guard.
Rivers seems to have improved his submission grappling technique since last time we saw him. Let's see if he can pull off a submission.

A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Rivers is pulling down on Voluspa's head to control his posture.
Voluspa wants to control from the top but Rivers keeps moving.
Rivers looking to hit a scissor sweep but Voluspa is one step ahead there.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Rivers has his hands on Voluspa's head, controlling the position.

The ref stands the fighters back up due to a lack of activity.
Voluspa shoots in for a double leg but Rivers sprawls well. That's going to sap some energy.
Phil Rivers has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Nori Voluspa.

Voluspa closes the distance and after a bit of a stuggle, scores a takedown into Rivers's guard.
Rivers has control of Voluspa's left arm, preventing Voluspa from doing any damage.

Rivers is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.

Rivers seems keen to control rather than go for a submission, at least for now.

There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.
Voluspa postures up in Rivers's guard and throws a big left but Rivers blocks it.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.
Rivers throws a jab when Voluspa was well out of range.

Voluspa gets a clinch.
Rivers tries to circle away but Voluspa has him pinned against the cage.

Rivers pushes off and circles away, back to the middle of the mat.
Rivers misses with a straight right.

Voluspa fakes with an overhand right and moves in to clinch with Rivers, pushing him back against the cage.

Rivers breaks the clinch and we're back to striking at distance.
A telegraphed takedown attempt from Voluspa is defended easily by Rivers.
A telegraphed right hand from Rivers misses the target.
Nori Voluspa seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Voluspa keeping a good distance there, avoiding the body shot.

Rivers tries to sprawl but Voluspa drives through with a takedown into half guard.
Rivers wants to control but Voluspa is keeping busy and won't allow it.
And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close round but I would say that Phil Rivers will probably get the nod.
The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action!

Rivers displays good takedown defense there as he swats away a double leg from Voluspa.

Voluspa shoots in and bounces Rivers off the cage to secure the takedown into guard.
Rivers will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions.

Voluspa closes the distance and looks for a trip takedown... aaaand he's got it - Voluspa lands in his opponent's guard.
Rivers is pulling down on Voluspa's head. It's preventing any offense from Voluspa, at least for the moment.

Voluspa looks up at the clock and then as Rivers takes his cue and looks up at the clock too, Voluspa smacks him right in the chops with a big elbow! How rude!

Voluspa wants to lay and pray for a moment but Rivers keeps working.

Voluspa works to advance to full mount. Rivers defends for a few seconds but eventually he succumbs.
Voluspa avoids the attempt from Rivers to control.
Voluspa tries to control but Rivers wriggling away.

Voluspa is in the full mount, landing strikes.
Voluspa lands a heavy elbow.
Rivers tries to hold on but Voluspa postures up.
Rivers working to try and regain half guard.
Voluspa looking to finish here with some ground and pound. He lands one big shot that has Rivers covering up... and two more big strikes land, forcing the referee to step in and put and end to proceedings! This fight is all over!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 3:44 of round 2, we have a winner by way of TKO (Strikes). Nori Voluspa!
Nori Voluspa took to the mic after the fight and begged the organizational hierarchy for a shot at the title.
