PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Master Bates (ranked 4646 p4p, 2945 weight class) and Fernando Furriel (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of The Island, Master Bates!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of The Island, Fernando Furriel!
The judges for this bout are Santiago Holmes, Michael Johnstone and Sandra Marshall.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Furriel shoots in for a double leg but Bates sprawls well. That's going to sap some energy.
Bates appears to be looking for a counter takedown.
Bates avoids the clinch attempt nicely.
Furriel tries to clinch there but Bates circles away.
Bates throws a big counter combination but Furriel scrambles out of danger and avoids any damage.

Bates closes the distance and gets a double leg, slamming Furriel to the mat! Furriel manages to get full guard.
Bates forces his way into half guard.
Furriel is a painfully thin specimen of a man. You do wonder whether a good body kick would snap him clean in two.
Still in half guard, Bates seems content to control.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Furriel is trying to get back to full guard.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Bates tries to stand but his arm is trapped.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Furriel tries to get to full guard but Bates has control of the leg.
Still in half guard, Bates seems content to control.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
The referee looks like he's ready to step in and stand the fighters back up.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
The crowd are starting to boo a lack of action.
Bates throwing shots but they're hitting the canvas more than the man.
Furriel wants to improve his position but Bates is controlling well.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.
Furriel tries to clinch up.
Bates keeps the fight on the outside.
Bates digs a good hook to Furriel's body.
Bates keeps the fight standing with a nice sprawl.
Furriel just manages to avoid a counter high kick fromBates.
Furriel shoots in for a takedown but Bates shows good takedown defense.
Master Bates has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Fernando Furriel.

Bates looking for a takedown here - he's got it.
Bates controlling from the top position.
Furriel can't keep his opponent in guard - Bates advances to half guard, no doubt looking to mount.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Furriel has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. Bates is working away from the top position though.
Bates tries to stand but can't do so whilst Furriel controls his leg.
Bates with a momentary lay and pray from half guard.
Bates really is built like a bowling ball. I wonder if he'd roll if you pushed him down a hill...

That's four minutes gone in the round.
My god... these two guys really need to pick up the pace or everyone will leave to go get a beer.
Bates wants to pass the guard but Furriel is defending well.
Bates performing his best blanket impression for a moment.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
Furriel moves in looking to clinch but Bates pushes him off.
Furriel shoots in for a takedown. "I don't think so" says Bates as he avoids it easily.
And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.

Master Bates dominated that round.
OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action.

Bates lets his hands go wild with a nice combination. Left! Right! Uppercut! Spinning backfist! Furriel goes down and covers up as Bates starts wailing on him! The ref watches the action closely before stepping in and putting a stop to the fight!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 0:05 of round 2, we have a winner by way of TKO (Strikes). Master Bates!
