PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Luke Smith (ranked 4624 p4p, 5143 weight class) and Jonathan Jones (ranked 0 p4p, 577 weight class). Jones has chosen God Gave Me Style as his entrance music. Jonathan Jones is the more experienced fighter, so let's see if that makes a difference tonight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Luke Smith!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 2 - 0 - 0, fighting out of New York, Jonathan Jones!
The judges for this bout are Micheangelo Fripello, Chris Saunders and Jeff Smith.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Smith takes one to the chin there.
Jones misses with a straight left.
Smith connects with a leg kick.
Jones throws a jab, cross combination which is slipped
and Smith counters with a two punch combo.
Jones rushes forward with a series of wild hooks but Smith moves out of range and avoids them all easily.

Smith darts in and lands a nice takedown into half guard.
Smith throws a big elbow that misses, also allowing Jones to regain full guard.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!
Smith postures up in Jones's guard and throws a big left but Jones blocks it.
Smith controlling from the guard. I say controlling but really, he's stalling.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Smith trying to control the position from guard on top but Jones is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
We must be close to a standup if these guys don't pick up the pace.

Smith drops back looking for a heel hook - he quickly realises he's not going to get it but Jones manages to dive on top of him before he can escape and now Smith has Jones in his guard.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.
Smith wants to sweep but no luck.
Smith has his hands on Jones's head, controlling the position.
Jones postures up.

Smith lands a beautiful sweep and he's now moved into his opponent's guard.


Jones pushes Smith off and gets back to his feet.
Jones cracks Smith with a right hand to the side of the head.
Jones looks to throw a body kick

so Smith counters with a double leg into guard. Good agility.
Smith tries to free his leg and advance position but Jones is retaining full guard.
Jones keeping moving, preventing Smith from controlling successfully.

Jones wants to stand and escape but Smith is having none of it.
Smith is looking to pass into half guard but Jones pushes him away with his feet and jumps on top - now Jones is in guard.

We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!
Smith tries to land a sweep but no joy.

Smith escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Jones gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance.

The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Jones wants to stand but Smith is controlling his posture from full guard.
And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.

A close round but Jonathan Jones will probably get the nod.
That's time! Smith's corner gives him a slap on the ass as he gets ready to fight.

Jones throws a head kick that connects with a bit of head and a bit of hand.
Jones blocks a head kick by Smith.
Jones fails to land with the punch combination there - jab, cross, hook, miss, miss, miss.

Smith rushes Jones and pushes him back against the cage in a clinch.
Jones is trying to force a seperation but Smith has the dominant position.
Smith keeps the fight in the clinch, despite Jones's efforts to push away.
Jones wants to break free but Smith has control.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Jones is trying to push Smith away but Smith has him pressed against the cage, so he's going nowhere.
Smith tries to pull guard but Jones forces him back to his feet, against the cage.
Smith stalling the fight.
Jones is trying to break the clinch but Smith is controlling him.

Jones can't break the clinch.

Jones escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.
Jones lands a head kick!

It looks like Luke Smith has been cut.
Jones pulls out of a head kick attempt.
Smith wants to take advantage of his opponent's missed offense by moving into the clinch.
Jones throws a shot from downtown. Smith moves away and avoids it.
Smith moves out of range of the body kick.
Jones throws a nice head kick!

and Smith counters by moving into the clinch.
The referee calls for Smith to work.
Smith pushes off an throws an elbow but Jones leans to the side and avoids it. We're back to clinching against the cage.

Smith pushes off and circles away, back to the middle of the mat.
Jones goes for a spinning back kick but it misses.

Smith misses with a half-hearted attempt at a head kick.
Jones fakes low and throws an overhand right that catches Smith on the side of the head.

Jones tries to keep at a distance but Smith has taken the fight into the clinch.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.
Smith content to slow the pace in the clinch.
Some stalling of biblical proportions here from Smith.

Smith has hold of one of Jones's legs. Jones is fighting the takedown attempt but Smith gets the trip and lands the takedown into guard.
Smith slows down the pace of the fight, as he sits in guard.

Smith decides he's had enough of playing guard and decides to stand. Come on Jones, up you get!

Jones connects with a solid leg kick.
Jones punishes Smith's body with a nice straight punch.
Jones with a nice looking leg kick. You could hear that one land in a back row.
Smith shoots in looking for a takedown. Jones tries to sprawl out of it but Smith keeps driving through. The fighters are pinned against the cage. Jones manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

Smith decides to change it up a bit and drives through with a nice takedown into half guard.

Jones makes some distance and scrambles quickly back to his feet. Nice work!
Jones lands a jab to Smith's midsection.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!
Jones lunges in with swinging rights and lefts but Smith circles away quickly and effectively.

Jones lands a jab. Then a cross. Then finally a nice hook to the body. Good work there by Jones.

Smith gets in close and instigates a clinch.
Smith is trying to work for a single leg takedown but Jones pulls him back up using the underhooks.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Luke Smith. That's going to take a lot out of him.

Smith shoots in from a long way out. He's driving through with the takedown attempt and he eventually gets it, landing in Jones's guard.

Smith isolates an arm and boxes in a triangle. Jones stacks Smith on his neck as he steps over and passes to the side. He's now in a much more dominant position where he can look to do some serious damage. Nice move by Jones!

Both fighters are breathing heavily.

Jones stands up and beckons Smith to his feet.
Jonathan Jones is looking to keep the fight on the feet at all costs.
Smith takes a head kick and keeps coming.
Jones rushes forward with a series of wild hooks but Smith moves out of range and avoids them all easily.

Jones's hands are dropping dangerously low here and Smith connects clean with a right hook that sends him down to one knee! Jones scrambles back to his feet.

Smith shoots in and scores a nice double leg takedown into half guard.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!
Smith is trying to control the action in half guard but Jones is working away on the bottom, looking perhaps to get back to full guard.
Jones pushes Smith off looking to stand but Smith dives back in and keeps control.
Neither fighter is being very active at the moment, with Smith in particular looking to stall.
Jonathan Jones is fighting for a decision - hopefully he's judged it right and he's actually winning the fight.
Smith seems very keen to just sit and control from half guard but Jones does not like that idea so much and is remaining active off his back.

Smith thows a huge punch but Jones dodges it nicely.

The ref stands the fighters back up due to a lack of activity.
Crunch! Jones slams his shin into Smith's torso.

Smith throws a big counter combination but Jones scrambles out of danger and avoids any damage.

There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.
A right-left combo lands from Jones.
Smith on the wrong end of an overhand right that came out of nowhere.
Jones throws a head kick that looked like it stung.
Jones lands a jab to Smith's midsection.
Smith fails with the takedown
letting Jones counter with a right hand.
Jones throws a head kick but Smith moves out of range.
Smith swung with a counter punch to the body but it didn't connect.
Jones clobbers Smith with an overhand right that has the crowd gasping. That made a horrendous noise.
Smith moves his head to the side to avoid a jab but walks straight into a cross.
Jonathan Jones seems to be getting the better of the standup.
Jones plants his feet and lands a nice head kick!
Smith tries to close the distance and clinch but Jones swats him to one side with an open hand palm strike and circles away.
Luke Smith has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!
Jones throws a head kick that Smith semi-blocks.

And that's the end of the fight!
Jonathan Jones comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
I've got Jones winning every round here. Surely the decision will go his way and he'll pick up a well deserved decision victory. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
