PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Mai Punani (ranked 4340 p4p, 4335 weight class) and Gaz Passer (ranked 147 p4p, 515 weight class). Well, the cameraman is lingering on a pretty young lady for a bit too long there. Keep your eyes on the prize buddy or you'll miss the fighter intros!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 3 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Mai Punani!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 3 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Gaz Passer!
The judges for this bout are Roger Salmon, Colin Fray and Josh West.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Punani has taken the fight to the clinch.

Passer is working on a single leg takedown against the cage. Punani can't fight it off and eventually Passer manages to take the fight to the floor. Punani looks annoyed but at least he's managed to land in guard.
Passer postures up.

Punani working for a triangle but Passer defends it easily.
Passer trying to control the position from guard on top but Punani is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Passer lands a couple of elbows.

Passer got a little sloppy there for a moment and Punani has worked his way into a loose triangle - can he finish it?! No, Passer has managed to get both his arms back between Punani's legs - danger averted.
Punani is trying to control the position from the bottom.
Punani is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Punani is working actively off his back, looking to secure an arm or perhaps work for a triangle.
Passer with a couple of shots to the head there. Not particularly brutal.

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.
Punani controls Passer momentarily but Passer frees himself.
Punani avoiding any damage from the ground and pound.
Passer loading up with the ground and pound but he's missing more than he's landing in this flurry.
Passer postures up to throw the ground and pound strikes but they don't connect.

Punani working for a triangle but Passer defends it easily.
Punani manages to sweep nicely, so he's now on top. Passer manages to get himself to full guard.

Punani stands and throws Passer's legs to the side, diving into side control.
Passer is not content to let Punani control the position.
Passer has the superior BJJ but he's also working some ground strikes into his gameplan.

Punani thinks about going for a far side armbar but bails out and retains the dominant position instead.
Passer is moving his hips around well on the bottom and has managed to get back to half guard.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Passer tries to roll over but Punani keeps him under control.

My god... these two guys really need to pick up the pace or everyone will leave to go get a beer.
Punani is looking to stall here but Passer recovers full guard.

Passer throws his legs up looking for a submission but Punani uses it to pass to side control.
Passer wants to control but Punani postures up.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
Passer takes a big shot right to the temple there but he's taken it well.
Punani working away diligently from side control. Landing strikes effectively there - that will score him some points on the judges scorecards.
And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close round but I would say that Mai Punani will probably get the nod.
That's time! Back to the action!

and Punani counters with a nice double leg into side control. Passer won't be happy with that.
Mai Punani overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.
Passer tries to work a leg under to get back to half guard but Punani wriggles his own leg back out and remains in side control.
Passer can't do much from the bottom here.

Punani is looking to take a break and control but Passer is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.

Passer makes his way to full guard. A much better position for Passer.

Punani is intent on slowing down the pace of the fight, simply looking to control.

Punani is looking for an arm triangle, whilst trying to pass to side control. Passer doesn't seem that keen to cooperate though. No luck this time Punani.
Passer is looking for a sweep. Punani is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position.
Punani stalling away here and it's allowed Passer to slip out his trapped foot and regain full guard.
Passer is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.
Passer not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.

The referee has stepped in and called for a break in the action. We'll restart on the feet.

Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.

Punani moves into the clinch.
Punani tries to land a shot to the body but it's blocked.
Passer is working for takedown but Punani is calmly controlling the position for now.
Punani just leaning against Passer, taking a breather.
Punani is trying to drag Passer to the mat but Passer just about manages to keep his footing. He used the cage to his advantage there.
Punani tries to land a knee to the head but misses.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
Punani misses with the head strike.
And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.

Mai Punani dominated that second round.
That's time! Back to the action! And we move into the final round!

Passer misses the shot to the body.
Punani appears to be looking for a counter takedown.
Passer pushing out the jab but it's not landing.

Passer drives through with a takedown into Punani's guard. Let's see what he can do from the top position.
Punani looking to sweep here. No luck so far.
Punani keeping full guard, as Passer tries to pass.
Punani not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.

Punani is throwing his legs up, looking for submissions. Passer is aware though and is defending well.

We must be close to a standup if these guys don't pick up the pace.
Punani is avoiding any damage by keeping wrist control.

The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up.
Punani defending well as Passer loads up on a big left hand.
Punani tries to close the distance and clinch up against the cage but Passer paws at him with a jab and circles away.

Punani closes the distance and pushes Passer back into the cage.
Passer has hold of a leg and is looking for a trip takedown. Punani avoids it nicely though and we remain in the clinch.

Passer looks to score with a jab to the body but Punani is just out of range.
Punani ducks under a wild hook from Passer.
Gaz Passer has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!

Passer swings widly with a right hand

and Punani counters with a nice double leg into guard.
Punani trying to control the position from guard on top but Passer is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.

Passer looking for submissions from the bottom here. Moving his hips around, possibly looking for an armbar.

Passer has his foot on Punani's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Punani works his way back into a safe position though.
Passer takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.
Passer keeping full guard, as Punani tries to pass.
Passer has momentary wrist control but Punani slips an elbow through the middle.

Punani is fighting to break Passer's control of his arms but Passer is doing a good job of controlling the position at the moment.
Punani wants to control from the top but Passer keeps moving.

Passer is looking for a guillotine. You can't force these things though and Punani defends well.
Punani connects with a couple of short punches.
Passer manages to sweep nicely, so he's now on top. Punani manages to get himself to full guard.

Passer is chipping away with strikes.
Punani is moving his hips around well on the bottom and has managed to get back to half guard.

Passer is looking for a kimura but he's never going to get it from there.

Gaz Passer comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
I think Punani has won this one but let's see what the judges have to say. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
