PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Rodney Ang (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Blaine Cantwell (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Ang comes to the cage accompanied by Long Way To The Top. Cantwell has chosen Paper Planes Remix as his entrance music. These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Rodney Ang!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Blaine Cantwell!
The judges for this bout are Gregory Folan, Robert Douchet and Dillan Fox.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Cantwell closes the distance and clinches.
Ang landing knees to the body. They look like they could hurt.
Ang is working for takedown but Cantwell is calmly controlling the position for now.

Cantwell jumps guard.
Cantwell is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.
Ang tries to free his leg and advance position but Cantwell is retaining full guard.
Cantwell looking to sweep here. No luck so far.
Cantwell manages to sweep nicely, so he's now on top. Ang manages to get himself to full guard.

Neither fighter is doing enough for the referee's liking and he's decided to stand them back up.

Ang has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. Cantwell is working away from the top position though.
Cantwell wants to stand up but Ang has a hold of him and won't allow it.
Ang is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Ang keeping his head moving to avoid the ground and pound.

Ang moves into full guard.
Ang wants to sweep but no luck.

Well, the referee has seen enough. Neither fighter is active enough on the ground so he's stood them back up.

Cantwell pushes Ang up against the cage in a clinch.
Ang tries to score a body lock takedown but Cantwell shows good agility there to stay on his feet.
Cantwell trying to stall but Ang improves his position.
The referee calls for Ang to work.
Ang lands a nice elbow from the clinch.
Cantwell wants to get back to striking at distance but Ang won't allow it.

Ang has moved round to his opponent's back and is looking for a suplex! Oh snap! He's tossed Cantwell clear over his head and slammed him to the mat!

Ang lands a punch that was close to the back of the head but the ref thinks it's OK.

As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.

Ang is working really hard to secure the rear naked choke. Cantwell defends successfully for a significant amount of time. Both fighters are looking very determined.
Ang connects with a series of strikes and the referee is calling for Cantwell to escape the position.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Rodney Ang dominated that round.
The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action.



Ang has Cantwell up against the cage in a clinch.
Ang has Cantwell pressed up against the cage and is working for takedown. Cantwell manages to improve position though and keeps the fight standing.
Cantwell throws a head punch that misses.
Cantwell creates a bit of distance and throws an elbow that only just misses.
Cantwell has had enough of the clinch but Ang keeps him there for the moment.
Ang is clearly stalling here... Pick up the pace son.
Ang goes for a takedown attempt but Cantwell pushes him away and we're back to fighting at a distance.
Cantwell lands a body shot.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Nice takedown defense from Cantwell. No joy for Ang on that attempt.

Ang shoots in for a double leg but Cantwell sprawls well. That's going to sap some energy.

Ang is looking to finish here, going for an Americana. Cantwell knows the correct defense though, so he's OK.
Ang lands a knee to the body and follows it up with some ground and pound to the head. That will wear Cantwell down.

The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action! This is the final round!


Cantwell tries to close the distance and clinch but Ang swats him to one side with an open hand palm strike and circles away.

Ang darts in and clinches Cantwell up against the cage.
Cantwell drops down looking for an ankle pick but Ang pulls his leg out and moves away.
Cantwell throws a right and a left that both miss.
Ang doesn't succeed with the takedown
and Cantwell counters with an outside leg kick.

Ang shoots in from a long way out. He's driving through with the takedown attempt and he eventually gets it, landing in Cantwell's guard.

Well I reckon that's a shut out for Ang, winning every round. Will the judges agree? They are the ones who matter, even if they are often depressingly incompetent. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
