PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Ruth Paulie (ranked 4460 p4p, 4668 weight class) and Robert Lawler (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Lawler has chosen Hold On, I’m Comin’ as his entrance music. We have two fighters making their debuts here, so let's see who comes out of this one with their first professional victory.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.

And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of The Island, Robert Lawler!
The judges for this bout are Peter Branson, Daniel Franklin and Dirk Anderson.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Lawler throws a combination that misses

and Paulie counters with a driving takedown into guard. Nice work there by Paulie.

Paulie stays in close to Lawler's body and controls the position.
Paulie passes into half guard.

Paulie seems to be looking for submissions.
Paulie content to control rather than advance.
Paulie takes advantage of the dominant position to land a couple of big hammer fists.

Paulie is sneakily working for an arm triangle but Lawler sees it coming and defends easily.

Paulie's ground tactics aren't going to win him many fans. Let's hope he's got fireworks for us if he gets back to his feet because he's not doing much on the ground.

Paulie seems to be working for a kimura but Lawler defends the submission attempt.

Paulie lands a big shot. The thud that echoes around the arena is like music to the fans' ears.

The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up.
Lawler throws a head kick that misses.

Paulie has managed to clinch.

A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd.
Lawler wants to strike at distance but he can't break free of the clinch.
Lawler is trying to push Paulie away but Paulie has him pressed against the cage, so he's going nowhere.

Paulie has hold of one of Lawler's legs. Lawler is fighting the takedown attempt but Paulie gets the trip and lands the takedown into guard.
Paulie is standing up over Lawler. Lawler looks to escape but Paulie dives into side control.

Paulie has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.

That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action.

The referee wants the fighters to be more active or he's going to reset them on the feet.

Lawler is trying to escape but when you're mounted that's not too easy.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.

Paulie seems to have a rather negative gameplan on the ground. He seems keen to just score the takedown and hold down Lawler for as long as he can get away with.

Lawler is looking to get back to his feet - it's going to be hard from this position.

Paulie lands a big shot there that rocks Lawler but he's holding on and managing to survive for now.

A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.

Lawler takes a big shot to the head but keeps on trying to improve his position.
Paulie cracks Lawler with a nasty head shot there - the crowd let out an audible gasp there, as the noise reverberated around the arena.

Paulie takes a little breather and maintains the position. The referee will be looking for him to stay active from such a dominant position though.
Paulie has controlled the position for a good 20 seconds, which will no doubt be starting to frustrate his opponent.
And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.

The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business. Let's get this one finished - here comes the final round!

Lawler misses with a half-hearted attempt at a head kick.

Paulie passes Lawler's left leg - he's now in half guard.

Paulie is scoring with some nice ground and pound from the dominant position.
Paulie takes a deep breath and rests his weight momentarily on top of his opponent, to control the position.
Paulie is working hard to pass the guard. He's done it - he's now in full mount! Trouble for Lawler!

Paulie lands a couple of good shots and Lawler has given up his back, trying to escape the position!

Paulie lands a punch to the side of the head from the back.
Lawler takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.
Paulie controls the action.
Can Lawler hold on?! Paulie is landing more strikes to his hapless foe.
Paulie just keeping the dominant position. He can't wait too long though, otherwise the referee will stand them back up.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
This is a sustained period of stalling by Paulie.

And that's the end of the fight!
Ruth Paulie showed his dominance in that final round.
Well I reckon that's a shut out for Paulie, winning every round. Will the judges agree? They are the ones who matter, even if they are often depressingly incompetent. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
