PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between The Manliest (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Renan Liddell (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Manliest comes into the arena with Ontlogy blaring out of the sound system. I'm sure you'll be fascinated to know that I was talking to some pointless Z list celebrity before the fight and he thought that Renan Liddell was going to win. Let's see if he was right.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, The Manliest!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 2 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Renan Liddell!
The judges for this bout are Luis Engracia, Felipe Paraventi and Daniel Cesar.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Liddell clinches with his opponent.
The pace slowing considerably in the clinch, as Liddell takes a break from that fighting nonsense to think about the finer things in life.

Liddell has picked Manliest up - he's going for a ride! Liddell dumps his opponent to the mat with a thud and settles into half guard.
Manliest really does look like a pencil wearing a pair of gloves. Let's hope he has a gameplan to suit that ridiculous body shape.
Liddell is looking to take a break and control but Manliest is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.
Manliest wants to control but Liddell is keeping busy.
Manliest is trying to stand back up but Liddell is controlling him

Neither fighter is doing enough for the referee's liking and he's decided to stand them back up.
Manliest misses with a takedown attempt - Liddell sprawls well and throws a nice strike on the way out which just misses.
Manliest will have to do better than that with his takedown attempts.
Manliest shoots in for a takedown. "I don't think so" says Liddell as he avoids it easily.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for The Manliest. That's going to take a lot out of him.

Liddell gets in close and instigates a clinch.

Liddell jumps into guard, dragging Manliest to the mat.
Liddell wants to get back to his feet but Manliest is in a dominant position and won't allow it.
Manliest trying to control the position from guard on top but Liddell is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.

Liddell is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Manliest trying to control the position from guard on top but Liddell is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Manliest throws a big right hand that misses.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Manliest drops back for a leg! It's a sloppy attempt though and Manliest jumps back into guard quickly, to retain the dominant position.

Well, the referee has seen enough. Neither fighter is active enough on the ground so he's stood them back up.
No luck for Manliest with that takedown attempt.
Manliest fails with the takedown.

That's three minutes gone in the round.

Liddell closes the distance and presses his opponent up against the cage.
Manliest goes for a takedown attempt but Liddell pushes him away and we're back to fighting at a distance.
Manliest tries for a takedown but Liddell sees it coming a mile off and avoids it easily.
Horrible takedown by Manliest or perhaps it was just good defense by Liddell which made him look bad.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.
Manliest avoids a punch combination nicely.
Manliest changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Liddell tries to avoid it but Manliest manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Liddell to the ground. Liddell escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet.
Manliest shoots in looking for a takedown. Liddell tries to sprawl out of it but Manliest keeps driving through. The fighters are pinned against the cage. Liddell manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing.
Manliest tries to shoot in for a takedown. He's got hold of a leg but Liddell swivels and escapes.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.

And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action.

Manliest is just holding on here. Liddell manages to take his back.
The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily.

Manliest is going to have to think about doing something other than just controlling because Liddell is managing to avoid having the position dictated to him.

and Liddell counters by moving into the clinch. Good anticipation by Liddell.

Manliest jumps guard but his hands slip and he falls flat on his back. Well, he's made himself look a right mug there, as Liddell walks away with a smile on his face. Manliest gets slowly back to his feet and shakes his head.
Manliest shoots for a takedown but Liddell saw that one coming a mile off and avoided it easily.

Manliest working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Liddell doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Liddell manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.

Manliest lands a beautiful switch and he's in full mount! That could spell trouble for Liddell!
Liddell is squirming around, avoiding Manliest's attempts to control the action.
Manliest takes a little breather and maintains the position. The referee will be looking for him to stay active from such a dominant position though.

Manliest can't quite control the action as he would like just now, as Liddell is looking to escape.

and Liddell decides to take the opportunity to score a takedown. He's landed in Manliest's guard.

Manliest is pulling down on Liddell's head to control his posture.

Manliest has his foot on Liddell's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Liddell works his way back into a safe position though.

Renan Liddell is fighting for a decision here - he's started to take the cautious approach.

Manliest has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Liddell can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself.

Well Liddell has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
