PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a bantamweight MMA rules bout between Jake Askren (ranked 4541 p4p, 3343 weight class) and Damon Petrers (ranked 247 p4p, 188 weight class). The atmosphere really building for this one as we go over to our ring announcer for the fighter introductions!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the bantamweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 5 - 7 - 1, fighting out of London, Jake Askren!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 5 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Damon Petrers!
The judges for this bout are Reed Andrews, Chad Campbell and Columbo Gatti.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Petrers throws a hook to the side of Askren's head but Askren sees it coming and ducks under it beautifully.

Askren drops down and drives through with a powerful takedown into guard.
Petrers controls Askren momentarily but Askren frees himself.
We've been hearing that Askren has been drilling a lot of ground and pound in training, so let's see if he get the finish.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Askren working some ground and pound from guard but it's not doing any damage.
Askren trying to control the position from guard on top but Petrers is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Askren is stalling in the full guard.
Petrers tries to land a sweep but no joy.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Askren stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Petrers swivels though and keeps the full guard.

Askren seems content to control from guard here. He's going to have to remain active though if he doesn't want to get stood back up.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

The referee has stepped in and called for a break in the action. We'll restart on the feet.

Petrers swings for the body but Askren moves out of range.
Damon Petrers is looking to keep the fight on the feet at all costs.

Askren shoots in and scores a nice double leg takedown into half guard.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!

Petrers wants to control but Askren is keeping busy.
Askren thows a wild elbow that connects with the canvas.
Petrers tries to roll over but Askren keeps him under control.
Askren looks to score some points with some ground and pound.

Askren drops an elbow to the side of Petrers's head.

Askren is taking a breather. Petrers says something to him but it's hard to make out. Perhaps he's telling him to get on with it and actually do something.
Askren thows a huge punch but Petrers dodges it nicely.
Petrers felt the need to train up his defensive grappling in the buildup to the fight. Presumably he was expecting to be in a difficult position like this, so let's see if he can get out of it.
Petrers is doing well to control the position and prevent Askren from advancing to side control.
The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily.
Askren stops Petrers from getting back to his feet.

A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd.
Askren looking to pass the half guard. Not this time.
Askren sitting in half guard, looking to land shots. Petrers defending well though.

Askren is keen to just control but Petrers is a slippery customer.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Askren content to control rather than advance.

The referee has decided to stand the fighters back up, so we'll restart on the feet.
Petrers tries to close the distance and clinch but Askren swats him to one side with an open hand palm strike and circles away.
And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.

Jake Askren dominated that round.
That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action.


Petrers darts in and clinches Askren up against the cage.
A head punch blocked on the inside by Askren.

Askren goes for a takedown attempt but Petrers pushes him away and we're back to fighting at a distance.
Jake Askren is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.

Askren shoots in from a long way out. He's driving through with the takedown attempt and he eventually gets it, landing in Petrers's guard.

Neither fighter is being very active at the moment, with Askren in particular looking to stall.

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.

Askren is nestled in close to Petrers, controlling him well. He's worked in a nice elbow to the side of the head as well, for good measure.

There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.

That was a close second round but I would say that Jake Askren will probably get the nod.
The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare each other down, ready to get back to the action. This is the final round!

Petrers swings wildly with a right hand that was never going to find it's target.

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.
